Kingdom Assignment
Feedback
helping people meet Jesus, become like Him and be equipped to impact the local and global community

Tim Clark - Senior Pastor
A word from our Senior Pastor
Hi, and welcome to the July edition of The
Vine, our monthly church magazine. We trust
that you have a great time with us as we
worship our awesome God together. Here at
York St, we are a large regional church that is
ALL ABOUT LIFE. This month there are many
things happening in the life of the church so
please take the time to read through The Vine
and if you have questions or comments then
don’t hesitate to contact our church office –
office@yorkst.com.au or check out our web
page www.yorkst.com.au for more
information.
Throughout the first three weeks of July we
will continue to look at a number of the
Courageous Prayers found in the Bible. On
22 nd July we will hear from those who were
involved in the Kingdom Assignment, and on
29 th July we will look at the topic of Baptism.
If you haven’t been baptised or have been
thinking about being baptised then I
encourage you to attend one of our services
on Sunday 29 th July.
2. They are to manage, multiply, and invest
this money as a steward OUTSIDE THE
WALLS of this church in some way that
advances God’s Kingdom agenda in the
world. WHAT they do and HOW they do it is
between them and God. GOAL: See how
far this $100 can go.
On Sunday 22 nd July we will begin to hear
some of the stories about
what has happened to the
participants of the Kingdom
Assignments and the $100
that was entrusted to them.
KINGDOM ASSIGNMENT FEEDBACK
On Sunday 22 nd July during all three services
we will hear some stories and testimonies
about the Kingdom Assignments which were
activated back in March. The Kingdom
Assignments were based upon the Parable of
Talents found in Matthew 25:14- 30.
On Sunday March 25 th at the end of all three
services we asked for 10 volunteers to gather
on the stage. I then handed each person
$100 and invited them to be part of the
Kingdom Assignment. In accepting the
Kingdom Assignment they did so with two
conditions.
1. They must understand and agree that the
$100 is NOT their money. It is the Master’s
(Jesus’) money and he has entrusted it to
them.
BUILDING UPDATE
It is exciting to see the new building almost
finished. Throughout this month we will see
the landscaping completed at the rear entry
as well as the final touches to the building.
We will also begin to unpack the playground
with the aim of starting the long process of
building it. If you haven’t had a chance to
look at the new buildings then I encourage
you to park at the rear of the church (off
Joseph St) and walk through the new building
next Sunday.
As a church we are borrowing up to $250,000
to complete this project. If you are part of the
Yorkie family, I ask that you prayerfully
consider giving a special offering to the
Building Project, particularly as we come to
the end of the financial year and many will
receive their tax returns.
STAFF UPDATE
We welcome back Angela
Oliver to the Ministry Team as
she returns to the role of
Worship and Creative
Ministries after being on
Maternity Leave. Please be
praying for Angela, Leigh and
the boys as Angela settles back into the role.
It is with much excitement that we announce
her husband Greg will
be moving from
Melbourne in July and
Colette will commence
A huge thank you goes to Eileen Bennett and
term. We have a fantastic children's Ministry
Team who are making a difference in the lives
of our children. Please not only pray for our
Yorkie Kids’ team, but if you have a child in
Yorkie Kids why not personally thank the
leaders.
Congratulations to our State Youth Games
Dress-up Day
Mainly Music is where parents and caregivers
bring their children for a thirty-minute session of
music, rhyme, movement, listening and more.
It has been specifically set up as a time when
parents can spend ‘time’ with their children.
Many activities today allow parents to leave their
children while they spend time by themselves.
The compilation of songs and actions are cleverly
formulated to encourage bonding with the adult,
whilst developing the children’s motor skills,
spatial, reading and word association and so
much more!
At this session, adults and children are given
snacks and refreshments. This allows time for
children to enjoy each other’s company, and to
develop social skills. In addition it enables those
adults who don’t have a wide circle of friends to
be introduced to others who have young children
and they are therefore able to support each
other.
Here is some of what is gained by coming to
Mainly Music:
MAINLY MUSIC
There is a Christ-Centred Family Care component
in the larger Mainly Music programs, where
families are supported when hurting, through
marriage or relationship breakups, miscarriage,
when a partner or child dies, supporting those
with police involvement and unconditional
positive regard.
Mainly Music provides an environment where
young children develop skills to enhance their
early education, through the use of music,
rhythm, rhyme, and other music related activities
with the participation of a parent or primary
caregiver.
In short, Mainly Music is an opportunity for adults
and young children to build memories and spend
time together, sharing special time with each
other, whilst reinforcing good behaviour.
If you are interested
in becoming involved
in this ministry,
please speak to
Goodbye Tim and Em
On Sunday 1 July we say farewell to Tim and Emily Drough as they move
to Newcastle for Tim to take up a Youth Pastor position with Mayfield
Church of Christ. Emily has secured a role working at Compassion
Australia’s headquarters.
Tim and Em have been such a great blessing to our church over the
years, with Em growing up here as a child and Tim joining us in recent
years. They have both headed up the young adult ministry CRAVE and also lead our VCE small group. In
2010 they were part of the leadership team of OnEarth and travelled to Dareton and also Halls Creek in
Western Australia.
Thank you so much for your faithfulness and service to York St, and we wish you God’s richest blessings
for the next chapter of your lives.
There will be a special supper for Tim and Em after the 6pm service on Sunday 1 July. Blessings, Blake
It’s hard to believe that term 2 has come and
gone and we're now half way through the
year! But we've had fun!
It has been a jam packed term with great
MOPS mornings, several major events and 1
major farewell. Rachel Francis, who has been
a part of York St MOPS for many years will be
missed but we are excited for the adventure
her family are about to embark on. [More
about Rachel and her family on page 14.]
Please pray for York St MOPS and the families
involved. Our numbers have fluctuated
considerably due to many families suffering
from gastro, colds and flu. Please pray that as
winter continues our families will be protected
from further illness. Also, we had a group
start up who were interested in finding out
more about Jesus and the Christian faith. This
has gone very well and will continue to meet
in term 3. Please pray for these mums and
that the seed of the Gospel will fall on 'good
soil'. We also have many pregnant mothers,
please pray for healthy pregnancies and safe
deliveries and that the miracle of birth will be
a witness to God's great goodness.
MOPS recommences for term 3 on July 25th,
9:30-11:30am.
Thank you for your prayers and support and
please consider volunteering some of your
time to help this vital mission to mums.
Peace,
Sarah
If you have ever thought about being a carer
at MOPS, now is the time to get on board!
A lot of the success of
York St MOPS is
because of the
wonderful people who
volunteer their time to
care for the children
attending. But due the
increase in families
and loss of a few
carers we desperately
need more help in this
area.
To be a carer all you
need to do is be free
on Wednesday
mornings during the
school term on a
fortnightly basis. It’s
not every week! Plus
you'll need an
approved Working With Children Check, which
we can help you obtain if you don't already
have one.
Whether you are younger and looking for
some childcare
experience or are
older and have
experience with
children to share, we
want to hear from
YOU! All our carers
work in teams, so you
won't be alone and
you'll have the
opportunity to make
some great friends.
Not to mention
brighten the day of a
mum and child or two
or three.
Please see Sarah
Bolton or Alisha
Kynoch ASAP if you
can help us (0431 511 609 or
yorkstmops@gmail.com).
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth Gen
1:1.
We went into groups and were given a verse from Genesis
about creation. We had five children and a teacher in each
group and we had to act it out. It was great, even though
there was a language barrier. We were able to recite a verse
about God creating the livestock and animals and we acted
like animals and made sounds. The girls I had, got so into it.
Henry Deutscher
Over the two days, there were two girls I really connected
with. I played soccer with them and tried to teach them how
to kick and hand ball an AFL football. I just felt so connected
to them even though again there was a language barrier.
They just touched my heart. On the last day as we said ‘bye I
cried so much. I had an overwhelming mothering instinct that
when I was hugging them that I really, really didn’t want to let
them go. I didn’t know or could imagine the hardships they
were facing back home but I had to let them go.
After we said goodbye I was an emotional wreck so I went
and spent time with God and with my Bible. I just poured out
all my emotion and my heart to him. I realised it’s a total trust
thing that they were in God’s arms before they were in mine.
Now they have left me, they continue to be in His arms. The
love I feel for them is only a glimpse into the love God has for
these precious children. He is their loving father. Then I felt I
really needed to read my Bible. I feel that God gave me these
passages Psalm 121:1-3 and Lamentations 3:19-24 .
A couple of days later two of us were sitting with Adam and
looking at his photos and his stories. He said something that
really stuck me, “After you meet people in the community and
go back and read the word, the words in the Bible become so
real, especially Lamentations!” I was gob smacked. He pretty
well explained what God had done in my heart. So when we
were alone later I mentioned, “I’m glad you said that because
I had that very experience the other day with a couple of
verses in Lamentations.” He asked to look at the verses and
said they were the same verses God had given him. It gave
me tingles and made me again feel like I am right where God
wants me to be :D
FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE
IN HIS IMAGE—PART TWO
Salt & Pepper Article
By Ray Veal
Candidates for Cadetship with the London
Metropolitan Police were asked to answer the
following question: “While patrolling in a busy
London suburb a gas main explodes in the
middle of a busy road, creating a huge crater,
blocking traffic in every direction. A number of
vehicles collide and you go to assist a young lady
who is in distress, only to realize that she is the
wife of your local police inspector, and you note
that she is at least .05! Then a man comes
running out of a nearby shop toward you saying
that his wife, who is heavily pregnant, has gone
into labour because of the shock. He asks you to
call an ambulance. But before you can, the gas
main ignites sending flames into the air and
spreading panic among the crowd causing
several to sustain injuries as they run from the
scene. You happen to notice that one of the men
rushing from the scene is a wanted criminal
whose photograph has been posted in your
station. By now, hundreds of people are shouting
to you and asking you to do something. How
would you proceed to bring things under control?
The ‘best’ answer was this one: “I would slip out
of my uniform, and get lost in the crowd.” I think
he might have failed the test!
As image bearers who wear the badge of Christ
in today’s society there will be many a time when
we feel the situation is just too hard, and when
we might like to slip out of our spiritual uniforms
and get lost in the crowd. The office talk is
getting rough; the after work party is sinking in
moral tone; the person we are with is taking the
Lord’s name in vain and we know that we should
say something; people are struggling and crying
out for help, and we have the answers but are
unable to speak! Maybe we fear the sceptic’s
tongue that says that our Christian values are old
fashioned, and our beliefs are incredibly stupid.
We know that inside the hearts of all people
there are deep unmet longings for love and
personal worth and significance. Our question
therefore is very similar to the one that was
asked of the would-be police cadets: What can
we do to be representatives of Jesus in our
immediate community?
The Bible speaks about ‘being conformed to his
image’ or being ‘transformed by the renewing of
our minds.’ Those six little words give the clue
about how we become image bearers. Our
external image is changed by an inner change
within our minds! Paul in his letter to the
Philippians writes, ‘Let this mind be in you which
was also in Christ Jesus’. (Philippians 2:5) The
Psalmist put it this way in Psalm 51:10, ‘Create
in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right
spirit within me.’ To change our behaviour we
must first change our minds! Paul nails this
teaching about inside-out-change in Romans 11:
33 to 12:2. “Is there anyone around who can
explain God? Anyone smart enough to tell him
what to do? Now this is what I want you to do.
Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture
that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead,
fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from
the inside out.” (MSG) “Be...transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to
know...what God’s will is – his good, pleasing
and perfect will.” (NIV) Following this inside-out
change, thoughts become actions, actions create
habits, and habits build character, and godly
thoughts create godly character.
Neuroscientists at the University of Ontario have
found a biological explanation supporting this
18

Biblical truth, that thoughts determine behaviour.
Over the course of a one-year study, volunteers
had their brain activity scanned in real time using
functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
while they performed a particular hand
movement. The scientists found that the
volunteer’s decision to act was picked up by their
brain activity pattern seconds before they
consciously responded. This study verified that
thinking does precede actions! Their findings
endorsed what clever old Solomon knew ages
ago when in Proverbs 23:7 he wrote, ‘As a man
thinks in his heart so he will be.’ C.T. Studd, a
famous cricketer and missionary of yesteryear
expressed this concept rather cutely with these
words, “What moves the heart, also wags the
tongue.” As a professional counsellor I believe
much is revealed about a person’s inner state of
mind and heart through the words they speak.
Whenever we speak, whether our words are kind
or loving, critical or angry, we are writing our own
autobiography for others to read. This is what
James means when he writes: “We get it wrong
nearly every time we open our mouths...By our
speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to
chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the
whole world up in smoke, and go up in smoke
with it...” [James 3: 1-6. MSG] James goes on to
contrast this negative image with the image of a
person with a pure heart. This person will ‘get
along with others’ be ‘reasonable and gentle,
overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot
one day and cold the next...You can develop a
robust community that lives right with God...only
if you do the hard work of getting along with each
other, treating each other with dignity and
honour.’ [James 3: 17-18. MSG]
and had not been able to walk from the time of
his birth. As the two guys approached him he
asked them for a few dollars to buy some food –
a request he had made to many others who
attended the Church. But these two guys were
prepared to do much more for him – they
decided to do what Jesus would have them do!
“We don’t have any cash” one said, “but we can
do better than that, why don’t you get up and
walk?” The man was not sure at first, but when
he saw the compassion in their eyes, he was
inspired to take a great leap of faith – and he got
up and walked!
As a result of this miracle, the whole of
Jerusalem was talking, and the leaders did not
know what to do! This familiar story of Peter and
John healing the lame man is an example of
what wonderful things can happen when we
allow ourselves to be Christ’s representatives in
our community. The truth is that “what counts for
great success in popular culture – strength
intelligence, wealth, beauty, power – means little
to our new image.” As representatives of Jesus in
our community our image will not be about an
arrangement of our skin cells or our physical
shape or financial status, but rather an evident
change that takes place as a result of God’s inbreathed
spirit that leads to an out-breathing of
the spiritual qualities that Jesus showed –
humility, servant-hood, and love. Only then will
we be able to say to people, ‘In the name of
Jesus rise up and walk.’
Ray Veal
Consider this story of two people who did just
that. Two guys were walking to Church and
neither man had the faintest idea of what a
remarkable day it would turn out to be. The city
would be in uproar before sundown, because of
what they were about to do. Outside of the
Church was a man who had a physical disability
