Alma Chapter 29
MORONI RAISES ARMY AND HELPS PAHORAN, VER. 1-19
Alma 29:2 But he did also mourn exceedingly, because of the iniquity of those who had driven Pahoran
from the judgment seat; yea, in fine, because of those who had rebelled against their country and also
their God.
Doubtless Moroni was relieved to learn of Pahoran's faithfulness, and of his wise and forgiving
attitude toward him. He “took a small number of men," as Pahoran had requested, and moved
toward the land of Gideon. In every place he entered he raised the standard of liberty and
"thousands did flock unto his standard, and did take up their swords in the defense of their
freedom" (4, 5).
When he reached Gideon and united with the forces of Pahoran, "they became exceeding strong,
even stronger than the men of Pachus," king of the dissenters (6), The battle was fought near the
city of Zarahemla, where Pachus was slain, and the judgment seat restored to Pahoran (7, 8). The
king-men were tried and executed according to law, except those who covenanted to defend the
country (10).
Moroni immediately caused that provisions and six thousand men be sent to Helaman and the
same to the armies of Lehi and Teancum,
Alma 29:16 And it came to pass that Moroni and Pahoran, leaving a large body of men in the land of
Zarahemla, took their march with a large body of men towards the land of Nephihah, being determined
to overthrow the Lamanites in that city.
While on the march they came upon a large body of Lamanites. They slew many and took their
provisions and weapons of war. Many of the prisoners entered into a covenant never to take up
arms again against the Nephites. Four thousand of these were sent to dwell with the people of
Ammon (17-19).
CITY OF NEPHIHAH TAKEN FROM THE LAMANITES, VER. 20-38
Alma 29:21 And it came to pass that when they had come to the city Nephihah, they did pitch their tents
in the plains of Nephihah, which is near the city Nephihah.
When the Lamanites saw the large army of Nephites, "they durst not come out against them.
...Moroni went forth in the darkness of the night, and came upon the top of the wall to spy out"
where the Lamanites were camped (23). He found them on the east:
Moroni returned to his army, had rope ladders prepared, and with them let his men down inside
the west wall of the city.
When the Lamanites awoke and saw the armies of Moroni, they fled out the pass in terror (28).
The Nephites marched forth against them and slew many and took many prisoners. The rest fled
toward the land of Moroni. Thus did Pahoran and Moroni obtain possession of "Nephihah without
the loss of one soul" (29, 30).
