period in the history of engineering.
Such visions conjure up images of the technological
history of the 20th century. The story began in the heyday
of another legendary mode of transport, the airship, often
known quite simply by the name of its inventor, Count
Zeppelin. Even in those far-off days, the ecologically
exemplary zeppelin was powered by Daimler engines.
They were built at early Daimler production facilities
under the direction of the engine designers Wilhelm
and Karl Maybach.
The name Maybach was a byword for German engineering
excellence and internationally renowned engine
performance until well into the second half of the century.
The tradition was continued firstly by Mercedes-
Benz, later by the partnership between Daimler-Benz
and MAN, and today by MTU under the umbrella of the
multinational DaimlerChrysler group.
MTU has been at the forefront of yacht-engine production
and distribution since long before the present sailing
boom. As long ago as the early 1950s, in its then guise of
Maybach, the company supplied the diesel power for the
famous "Creole", a world-class sailing yacht built in
1927. Today, MTU quality is the benchmark for the absolute
pinnacle of engine technology.
