Renaissance of a Value System
Well endowed with pioneering success and fame, Karl
Maybach soon turned his attention to the development of
fast-running diesel engines. His creations in this field
also proved to be top-quality, highly versatile products
with outstanding characteristics. They rapidly established
themselves in a multiplicity of applications and were particularly
well received in the ship and yacht-building
industries. By the 1950s they had become widely adopted
as the standard equipment.
The success of technical innovation is measured against
everyday operation. Maybach diesel engines offered the
potential for enormous variability and versatility. That
predestined them for universal suitability. Consequently
they also became the standard choice for exclusive sailing
yachts. An outstanding example was the worldfamous
schooner "Creole" built by Camper & Nicholsons
in 1927 which, in 1952, was fitted with two Maybach MD
655 diesel propulsion units (882 kW/1200 hp each) as
well as MD 215 engines (150 kW/204 hp) for driving the
electricity generators.
strategy. The legendary
brand name remains an
icon and benchmark of
the highest standards in
engine quality. Today,
MTU is the world's leading
brand for luxuryyacht
engines. Together
with its American partner,
Detroit Diesel Corporation
(DDC), MTU commands
56% of the world
market for yachts over
80 feet.
Those yachts meet the very highest standards. Perhaps
the most important criterion is individuality. Attempting
to achieve it sometimes seems impossible. But it is precisely
that which the engineers and designers of mega sailing
yachts can create.
Milestone:
Combining Forces
Horizons:
From Tradition to Vision
In 1969, Maybach-Motorenbau, Daimler-Benz and M.A.N
combined forces to form MTU Friedrichshafen. Since that
time the new company has continued the Maybach tradition
of technical innovation and its successful product
That ambition has brought the tradition of the past into a
new era. The realization of the most ambitious individual
dreams is also among the highest priorities for the
makers of the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62. In 2002,
DaimlerChrysler resurrected the Maybach marque after
an absence of 60 years with a car that offers the last word
in luxury. Equipped with the automotive technology of
the 21st century, produced by advanced manufacturing
methods and designed with loving attention to detail, the
new Maybach reflects the standing of DaimlerChrysler as
the world's most innovative and longest established car
maker and benefits from the technological leadership,
expertise and unrivalled experience of its sister-make,
the Mercedes-Benz, in the global luxury-car market.
Thus the Maybach defines the standards at the absolute
pinnacle of the motorcar market and simultaneously continues
the tradition of the legendary Maybach cars that,
together with Mercedes-Benz, formed the elite of the German
and international automobile industry in the 1920s
and 1930s.
As in the past, the Maybach name will in the future once
again represent the epitome of ultimate automobile exclusivity
and elegance. Both DaimlerChrysler and MTU feel
an obligation to the tradition of the Maybach, the legendary
luxury marque.
