Well endowed with pioneering success and fame, Karl
Maybach soon turned his attention to the development of
fast-running diesel engines. His creations in this field
also proved to be top-quality, highly versatile products
with outstanding characteristics. They rapidly established
themselves in a multiplicity of applications and were particularly
well received in the ship and yacht-building
industries. By the 1950s they had become widely adopted
as the standard equipment.
The success of technical innovation is measured against
everyday operation. Maybach diesel engines offered the

they also became the standard choice for exclusive sailing
yachts. An outstanding example was the worldfamous
schooner "Creole" built by Camper & Nicholsons
in 1927 which, in 1952, was fitted with two Maybach MD
655 diesel propulsion units (882 kW/1200 hp each) as
well as MD 215 engines (150 kW/204 hp) for driving the
electricity generators.
