Dr. Ambika Mathur<br />

Top Women Achievers of the Community<br />

Dr. Ambika Mathur is the Dean of the Graduate School at Wayne State University where<br />

she oversees more than 7,200 students across 12 schools and colleges in 75 PhD and 129<br />

Master’s programs. Her research and teaching interests relate to cancer immunology, the<br />

immunological basis for complementary and alternative medicine interventions, and<br />

research training of postdoctoral, graduate, medical, undergraduate and high school<br />

students.<br />

During her distinguished career, she has received over 20 million dollars in national grants<br />

and awards for her research and published over 200 books, articles, chapters, proceedings<br />

and abstracts.<br />

Dr. Mathur has also published a series of books for children and is passionate about<br />

promoting literacy, especially among inner-city children. In her spare time she enjoys<br />

spending time with her husband Dr. Deepak Kamat, her twins Amol and Aarti Kamat who<br />

are both in medical school and her little dogs Bablu and Tinku.<br />

Dr. Mathur received her doctorate degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Iowa. Following postdoctoral<br />

fellowship training, she was appointed to the faculty at the University of Minnesota. She joined Wayne State<br />

Acharya Sharada Kumar<br />

Sharada Kumar, the acharya and president of Chinmaya Mission Ann Arbor is the National<br />

Yellow Gandhi<br />

Yellow Gandhi has always enjoyed shaping the lives of children and giving back to the<br />

community at large. While attending Sophia College in Bombay, Yellow taught<br />

children of Detroit and further provide a mechanism for the Metro Detroit community and in particular the Indian community<br />

to help pay it forward by improving the lives of the next generation.<br />

Smt. Sudha Chandra Sekhar<br />

Smt. Sudha Chandra Sekhar, a world renowned performer of Bharat Natyam and<br />

several other classical and folk styles of Indian dance, has brought a sizeable part of<br />

India to Michigan. She has shared her knowledge of her homeland, its heritage and<br />

arts with many audiences throughout the Metro Detroit and surrounding areas to<br />

promote diversity. Sudha has more than 5000 performances to her credit and has<br />

conducted lecture demonstrations throughout the country and Canada. In recent<br />

years, Sudha introduced the traditional dance style Bharata Natyam in the French<br />

opera 'Lakme". Symbolizing the peak and purity of performance, Sudha Chandra<br />

Sekhar has been classed with the 'all time greats' of classical Bharata Natyam and<br />

Kuchipudi schools.<br />

Meticulous in each portrayal and adhering to the purity of the style, Sudha conducts classes for young aspirants and also<br />

imparts theory classes for those interested in the art. She has taught seasonal course sessions and independent study<br />

courses through University of Windsor, Wayne State University, Albion College and University of Michigan Ann Arbor.<br />

She is the recipient of numerous awards, prizes, medals and citations including 'Bhartha Kala Shreshta' by Sri Chakra<br />

Maha Meru Peetam in 2011 and 'Nritya Seva Mani’ awarded by the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival USA in 2010.<br />

She will be conducting her 100th arangetram in July this year.<br />

Her school Nritya Sudha's Hindu Temple Rhythms was formed in 1958 by her parents Smt. Jaya and Vaideeshwara<br />

Her husband Sankarnarayanan Chandra Sekhar founded the Legacy foundation for the preservation, dissemination and<br />

enlightenment of the sacred, religious and classical foundations of the ageless legacy of India.<br />

Mona Sashital<br />

<br />

based organization providing support to families and individuals of South Asian<br />

origin in Michigan. Since its inception in 1986, MaiFS has helped over a thousand<br />

individuals who have knocked on our doors seeking help in the areas of mental<br />

health issue, substance abuse, domestic abuse and senior issues.<br />

Mona also volunteers at the Novi Senior Center and at Providence hospital once a<br />

week for past several years.<br />

In 2005, after 20 plus years of service, Mona retired from EDS (now HP) where she<br />

worked in various leadership roles such as Technical Leader and Project Manager.<br />
