Land trusts protect land by outright purchase and stewardship by working with government agencies, by purchasing or accepting donations of conservation easement and development rights, and by creatively working with property owners who want to preserve the natural resources on their land. The conservancy can accept land, easements, services and money as tax deductible donations. The name “Manada Conservancy” was chosen to signify not only the geographical area upon which the Conservancy hopes to focus, but also the importance of waterways, habitat and the rich historical heritage of the region. The Manada Creek is near the center of the focal area and feeds into the Swatara Creek. Abundant wildlife can be found along these waterways as well as evidence of Native American settlements and other unique historical sites, such as the Union Canal. The Board of Directors is composed of individuals representing East Hanover, West Hanover, South Hanover, Hummelstown and Derry Townships in Dauphin County and East Hanover Township in Lebanon County. GRANTVILLE VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY The Grantville Volunteer Fire Company is dedicated to providing fire protection, rescue, fire police, emergency medical and other support services to East Hanover Township and surrounding areas. The fire company publishes an annual fire company book and “39er” newsletter to inform residents of company activities, services and operational statistics. The fire company book, carnival, chicken bar-b-ques, basket bingos and block shoots are some of the fundraising activities needed to operate this fire company. The company also co-sponsors such community activities as the Halloween Parade and Christmas Tree Lighting program. The fire company is always in need of emergency response and support personnel. Residents are invited to join by obtaining an application from any fire company member or one of the officers listed. The cost of membership is $3.00 per 12 • Raising a Thinking Child, a program that teaches parents of children how to use a problem-solving approach to discipline through a series of games the parent and child play together. • After-School Programs, working in collaboration with the school district, CTC helps provide Steps-for-Success, after school tutoring for identified middle school students and Club Ophelia, an after school program that helps middle school girls develop healthy relationships. CAPITAL AREA THERAPEUTIC RIDING ASSOCIATION CATRA, the Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association, located in Grantville, PA, is looking for volunteers to help with their animal therapy and horseback riding program Therapeutic riding helps children and adults with disabilities achieve their goals of muscle conditioning, improves balance, eye-hand coordination and helps the nervous system find and use undamaged pathways for improved body functioning. This is done in a “fun” setting. Riders enjoy friendships, improve self-esteem and increase socialization. The exceptional horses used in this program are gentle, patient and obedient. If you love horses, or ever wanted to own a horse, this is your chance to care for, and handle, very special equines. CATRA adds animal therapy as well with an array of interesting animals such as miniature horses, goats, dogs that ride the horses, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks and a pot bellied pig. Scheduling to volunteer at CATRA is set up at your convenience. You can donate an hour, or a whole afternoon. Morning or afternoon is available 7 days a week, year round. Animal care is a never-ending reality. For those with a “green thumb”, we need you too! Flower beds need attention as needed three seasons a year. CATRA has something for everyone. LOWER DAUPHIN COMMUNITIES THAT CARE Lower Dauphin Communities that Care (LDCTC) is a community-based non-profit organization established in 2001 to promote healthy behaviors in youth within the Lower Dauphin School District. Our programs are designed to increase protective factors and reduce adolescent problem behaviors like substance abuse and school drop out. Current programs include: • Preschool Literacy Outreach, a program providing children’s books to one, two, three and four year olds on their birthdays. • Books on Board, a bookmobile that travels to locations within the Lower Dauphin School District engaging preschoolers and their families in literacy activities. East Hanover bookmobile stops are Tuesdays: 9:30-10:15 Faith United Church of Christ; 10:30-11:15 Meadow Creek Development (Timber Ridge Rd/Crapapple Ct); 11:30-12:15 East Hanover Township Municipal Building • Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a school-based mentoring program at the middle school, high school and four elementary schools including East Hanover. • Guiding Good Choices, a family bonding and drug prevention program for parents of children in grades 4-8. 20 year. Youth between the ages of 16 and 18 are invited to join the Junior Fire Fighter Program. The fire company meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the fire house. The fire company auxiliary holds a meeting the first Tuesday of each month.
