Korea.<br />
November 28–December 10: Combat Cargo Command C–119s and C–47s<br />
air-dropped and landed some 1,580 tons <strong>of</strong> equipment and supplies,<br />
including eight bridge spans, for the 1st Marine Division, which Communist<br />
Chinese forces had surrounded at the Chosin (Changjin)<br />
Reservoir area in northeastern North Korea. <strong>The</strong> C–47s also evacuated<br />
almost 5,000 sick and wounded marines from Hagaru-ri and Koto-ri.<br />
December 5: Combat Cargo Command evacuated 3,925 patients from<br />
Korea on 131 flights—the most aeromedical airlift that occurred in<br />
one day during the Korean War. United Nations forces abandoned the<br />
North Korean capital <strong>of</strong> Pyongyang.<br />
December 9: A <strong>USAF</strong> C–47 made the first successful night drop <strong>of</strong> agents<br />
behind enemy lines in Korea.<br />
December 14–17: Combat Cargo Command evacuated 228 patients, 3,891<br />
other passengers, and 20,088 tons <strong>of</strong> cargo from Yonpo <strong>Air</strong>field as Chinese<br />
troops pressed X Corps in the Hamhung-Hungnam defense<br />
perimeter <strong>of</strong> northeastern Korea. Naval transports removed the<br />
remainder <strong>of</strong> X Corps by December 24.<br />
December 17: For the first time, Far East <strong>Air</strong> Forces F–86s encountered<br />
North Korean MiG–15s in combat. Lt. Col. Bruce H. Hinton scored<br />
the first F–86 victory over a MiG–15.<br />
<strong>The</strong> F–86 Sabre was the preeminent <strong>USAF</strong> air-superiority fighter in the<br />
Korean War.<br />
