Galeb attack aircraft over Bosnia during the first combat in North<br />
Atlantic Treaty Organization history.<br />
April 10: Two F–16 Fighting Falcons struck a Bosnian Serb command post<br />
near Gorazde in Serbia after Bosnian Serbs attacked United Nations<br />
personnel in the enclave. This was the first close air support mission <strong>of</strong><br />
Operation DENY FLIGHT and the first air-to-ground bombing in the<br />
history <strong>of</strong> the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.<br />
April 14: Two F–15 Eagles <strong>of</strong> the 53d Fighter Squadron mistakenly shot<br />
down two Army UH–60 Black Hawk helicopters over northern Iraq,<br />
killing 26 people, including 15 Americans.<br />
May 3: <strong>The</strong> last B–52G Strat<strong>of</strong>ortress went into storage at Davis-Monthan <strong>Air</strong><br />
Force Base, Arizona. <strong>The</strong> only B–52s left in the active <strong>USAF</strong> inventory<br />
were H models.<br />
May 6: 1st Lt. Leslie DeAnn Crosby became the first <strong>Air</strong> Force Reserve<br />
woman fighter pilot after she graduated from an F–16 Fighting Falcon<br />
training course in Tucson, Arizona.<br />
June 26: A 60th Military <strong>Air</strong>lift Wing C–5 Galaxy airlifted a 34-ton magneticresonance<br />
imaging system to Chernobyl, Ukraine, to help medical personnel<br />
treat victims <strong>of</strong> a 1986 nuclear accident.<br />
June 29: A U.S. space shuttle visited the Russian space station Mir for the<br />
first time.<br />
June 30: United States <strong>Air</strong> Forces in Europe ended its presence in Berlin,<br />
Germany, after 46 years.<br />
July 1: Responsibility for maintaining the readiness <strong>of</strong> the nation’s intercontinental<br />
ballistic missile force transferred from <strong>Air</strong> Combat Command<br />
to <strong>Air</strong> Force Space Command, which had previously assumed<br />
responsibility for missile warning, space surveillance, space launch,<br />
and satellite control.<br />
July 1: <strong>The</strong> 184th Bombardment Group in Kansas became the first <strong>Air</strong><br />
National Guard unit to be equipped with the B–1B Lancer.<br />
July 22: As part <strong>of</strong> Operation SUPPORT HOPE, a humanitarian-relief operation<br />
for refugees from the Rwandan civil war, C–5s and C–141s began<br />
airlifting equipment and supplies from Germany to Uganda and<br />
Kenya. C–130s transported the cargo from there to refugee camps in<br />
Zaire. By August 7, they had delivered 3,660 tons <strong>of</strong> relief cargo. At<br />
least 22 airlift wings and groups participated.<br />
August 2: Two B–52 Strat<strong>of</strong>ortresses <strong>of</strong> the 2d Bombardment Wing on a<br />
show-<strong>of</strong>-force mission to Kuwait set a world record circumnavigating<br />
Earth. <strong>The</strong> 47-hour flight took five aerial refuelings and delivered 54<br />
146
