December 2–13: In one <strong>of</strong> the most challenging space missions ever, astronauts<br />

aboard the space shuttle Endeavour, piloted by Col. Richard O.<br />

Covey, <strong>USAF</strong>, performed a record five spacewalks to repair the Hubble<br />

Space Telescope.<br />

December 7: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Air</strong> Force Reserve acquired its first B–52 bombers, which<br />

went to the 917th Wing at Barksdale <strong>Air</strong> Force Base, Louisiana.<br />

December 17: <strong>The</strong> first B–2 Spirit bomber, <strong>The</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> Missouri, arrived at<br />

Whiteman <strong>Air</strong> Force Base, Missouri. <strong>The</strong> B–2, essentially a flying wing,<br />

was the first “stealth” heavy bomber.<br />

1993–94<br />

January 10: Crewmen in a 56th Rescue Squadron HH–60G Pave Hawk helicopter<br />

earned the Mackay Trophy by rescuing six sailors from their<br />

damaged tugboat <strong>of</strong>f the coast <strong>of</strong> Iceland.<br />

January 13: <strong>The</strong> final F–15 Eagle <strong>of</strong> the 32d Fighter Group departed Soesterberg<br />

<strong>Air</strong> Base, ending 40 years <strong>of</strong> <strong>USAF</strong> operations in the Netherlands.<br />

January 15: Hungary, Rumania, and Bulgaria granted overflight rights for<br />

F–16 Fighting Falcons deploying from Germany to Turkey, saving<br />

them two hours and marking the first flight <strong>of</strong> <strong>USAF</strong> fighters on an<br />

operational mission over these countries since World War II.<br />

January 25: A Titan II booster launched the unmanned space probe Clementine<br />

I toward the Moon—part <strong>of</strong> the first U.S. lunar mission since<br />

Apollo 17 in 1972.<br />

February 7: <strong>The</strong> first Titan IV/Centaur rocket boosted the first Military<br />

Strategic and Tactical Relay Satellite into geostationary orbit. This system<br />

would provide the U.S. military secure, survivable communications<br />

through all levels <strong>of</strong> conflict.<br />

February 10: Lt. Jeannie Flynn completed training in an F–15E Eagle to<br />

become the first woman fighter pilot in the <strong>Air</strong> Force.<br />

February 18: <strong>USAF</strong> aircraft deployed to France for the first time in more<br />

than 20 years. <strong>The</strong> five KC–135 Stratotankers flew from French bases<br />

to refuel aircraft patrolling airspace over Bosnia-Herzegovina in Operation<br />

DENY FLIGHT.<br />

February 28: As part <strong>of</strong> Operation DENY FLIGHT, two F–16 Fighting Falcon<br />

pilots <strong>of</strong> the 526th Fighter Squadron shot down four Serb Jastreb-<br />
