withdrawal from Lebanon <strong>of</strong> U.S. marines who had served as part <strong>of</strong> a<br />

multinational peacekeeping force.<br />

March 19–April 9: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Air</strong> Force flew 28 C–5 Galaxy and 17 C–141 Starlifter<br />

missions and deployed an E–3A Sentry in support <strong>of</strong> Egypt and Sudan<br />

against threats from Libya.<br />

April 6–13: A crew in the space shuttle Challenger conducted the national<br />

space program’s first satellite-repair mission, retrieving an orbiting<br />

vehicle, fixing it, and then releasing it.<br />

May 16: C–141 Starlifters delivered 22 tons <strong>of</strong> medical supplies to Afghan<br />

refugees at Peshawar, Pakistan. <strong>The</strong> refugees had fled their country<br />

because <strong>of</strong> war.<br />

July: <strong>The</strong> first Harpoon (AGM–84) missile was delivered to the 69th Bombardment<br />

Squadron, 42d Bombardment Wing, Loring <strong>Air</strong> Force Base,<br />

Maine. B–52s could launch the missiles to destroy enemy ships.<br />

August 7–October 2: In Operation INTENSE LOOK—the deployment <strong>of</strong><br />

U.S. minesweeping assets to the Red Sea—Military <strong>Air</strong>lift Command<br />

flew 44 missions to transport 983 passengers and 1,324 tons <strong>of</strong> cargo.<br />

Egypt and Saudi Arabia had requested the minesweeping after mysterious<br />

shipping explosions.<br />

August 28: A C–5 Galaxy arrived at Florennes <strong>Air</strong> Base, Belgium, with the<br />

first shipment <strong>of</strong> support equipment for ground-launched cruise missiles<br />

in Europe.<br />

September 18: Col. Joe Kittinger, Jr., <strong>USAF</strong>, retired, completed the first successful<br />

solo crossing <strong>of</strong> the Atlantic Ocean in a balloon, having traveled<br />

from Caribou, Maine, to Savona, Italy, in 84 hours. <strong>The</strong> 3,550mile<br />

flight set a new balloon distance record.<br />

October 5–13: During a space-shuttle mission, the crew <strong>of</strong> Challenger refueled<br />

a satellite in orbit for the first time.<br />

1985<br />

1984–85<br />

January 1: Lt. Col. David E. Faught, a 97th Bombardment Wing instructor<br />

pilot, earned the Mackay Trophy by preventing the loss <strong>of</strong> a KC–135<br />

Stratotanker and saving the lives <strong>of</strong> seven fellow crewmen. He landed<br />

the aircraft despite the fact that its nose gear would not extend.<br />

January 24: Col. Loren J. Shriver, <strong>USAF</strong>, led the four-man crew <strong>of</strong> Discovery<br />

on the first all-military space-shuttle mission.<br />
