COME AS YOU ARE COMMUNITY PICNIC
Buster, It’s people like you who bring happiness in the lives of others, Why not try mingling
with friends OUTDOORS in beautiful Balboa Park at a FREE community event without
fundraising, attitude, or restrictions on how you dress, identify, or live your life!
A TRAGEDY IN SILENCE
There’s a suicide problem among Transgender youth. It saddens me to hear that this is
happening not just in San Diego but all around our country. We need to keep the lines
of communication open with the transgender community and our youth. Remember
how difficult it was for us growing up? Society telling us we are different; we don’t fit
in; why are you like that? In a sense bullying us to the point of feeling helpless. This is
why we need to keep an open ear to the youth letting them know they’re important.
41% of people who are transgender have attempted suicide sometime in their lives.
One of the most important aspects of teen suicide prevention is support. The teenager
needs to know that you support and love him or her, and that you are willing to help
him or her find hope in life again. One of the most effective ways to prevent teen suicide
is to recognize the signs of suicidal thoughts and feelings. A few red flags to look for
would be withdrawal from friends and family members and changes in the quality of
schoolwork or lower grades. Other red flags might be changes in appearance (for the
worse) and changes in eating habits
Here is one teen’s poem of how she felt. Lyn wrote this in 2007 and titled it ‘How I feel.’
How I Feel
Sometimes I just wish, I could run away and hide.
No matter where I go though, these feelings stay inside.
How can I stay here and live each day a lie,
When all I want to do is close my eyes and die?
The “Come As You Are” Community Picnic, hosted by Mr. San Diego Leather 2006, Buster,
began in February of this year as a way to foster community with few restrictions on
who can participate. “We have a vibrant and diverse community,” says Buster, “one
which is more connected than ever online. And yet, we are happier and healthier when
we are together in real time--that’s where we really bond despite our differences. So,
he thought, why not host a regular gathering in the park where anyone can join, doing
something that allows us to have fun together outside.” A picnic makes a good choice for
such an event.
We gather at the southeast corner of Sixth and Quince in Balboa Park in San Diego so
there is no cost to park or to attend the picnic. The location has space for us to spread
out and we normally have an area for physical games (lawn bomber, volleyball, catch)
and an area for seating and card games. We play a modified version of Cards Against
Humanity, which we call Cards Against Normality, because it’s easy to pick up and
leave any time, the rules are simple, and the cards are very funny. It’s bring your own
everything, you should at least bring a lawn chair/towel/blanket, sunscreen/hat, water,
and snacks (there are great food/drink options a block away--even vegetarian and vegan
food!). Some people bring games or food to share, while others just bring a chair and a
positive attitude.
We gather there from 11-2 every three weeks on a Saturday. Some people drop by for
30 minutes, others stay the whole time, but the time is designed to allow you to do your
morning chores (or sleep in) and then join us before your Saturday afternoon fun. The
picnic started with five people, two weeks later there were 10 people, then last time
we had 25 people. 25 is a great number, considering it was the Saturday after that big
rain storm—people love coming to this picnic! There were seven or so people who had
never really participated in events before, they joined with a friend and they fit right in!
That’s what we want. The event gets better as more people join in, and each time it
changes based on who is there and what they bring to the mix. We want people to
keep coming out, bring their friends, and people will just see our group in the park and
walk up to join us. Candi your readers and their friends are invited, too!! Why not try
mingling with friends OUTDOORS in beautiful Balboa Park at a FREE community event
without fundraising, attitude, or restrictions on how you dress, identify, or live your life.
Join us next time on June 11th, and SAVE THE DATES for the next picnics: every three
weeks on Saturday: June 20, July 11, August 1, August 22, and September 12, 2015 from
Executive Director at North County LGBTQ Resource Center in Oceanside, Max Disposti,
along with his volunteers and staff is working hard with our youth. One group at The
Center is called TRANS*CEND. It is a Transgender support group for ages 18- 25. Partly
just hanging out in a supportive and respectful environment, it rotates between more
traditional support-group styled meetings and group activities. In the past, these have
included things like: movie night , going to the beach, going to Pride, coffee house
meet ups, and more. Activities vary, and all are held in an inclusive and respectful
environment. This group meets every Saturday from 4-6 pm at the Resource center.
Anyone under 18 years of age who is interested in attending contact the group directly
at transcendgendergroup@gmail.com
Any other questions can also be directed to the same e-mail address, and a moderator
will get back to you as quickly as possible. Please feel free to contact the Center at 760-
