APPENDIX 1
The Times of India, Lucknow, 3 March 2011
The clash between the judicial body and the unofficial councils (which regulate on their
own many sectors and areas of Indian society) is less antagonistic than one can suppose. It rather
involves different forms of interference with “the personal lives of people”. Often police are
reluctant or unwilling to intervene, especially when the plight of women is concerned.
