arcing potential. Once a high voltage discharge "arc" path has been established
in a detector, a minute amount of carbon is deposited at the point of discharge on
the detector chamber. This carbon deposit then becomes a point of decreased
resistance in the probe chamber for subsequent arc potential. If arcing is allowed
to continue by further over-volting the detector, additional carbon deposits will
occur due to arcing and the detector's performance will begin to deteriorate at an
increasing rate.
