The Hewlett Packard Smart Wand Bar Code Reader is a high performance contact
reader designed to scan and decode bar code labels located on uniform surfaces
with its sapphire tip in direct contact with the bar code label when scanning. The
scanner is capable of reading through pla~:tic i,uninates up to 0.25mm (0.010")
thick. It is a "smart" code reader in that it is aE intelligent, microcomputer-based
integrated peripheral which transmits decoded bar code data in a serial ASCn
format. This effectively frees the PCIVK-2's processor from the decoding
task. It also provides greater flexibility in its bar coded badge reading function in
that it is a hand held unit capable of usage at up to five feet away from the PCM­
2 unit. The wand is a "pen" shaped unit which is held in a plastic holster
mounted to the front of the instrument's console panel base where it is easily
accessed by users of all sizes.
