ABSTRACT<br />

Potato tuberosumL. continuesto beaneconomicallyimportantcrop inthe mid-<br />

Atlanticregion fthe U. S. <strong>Weed</strong>controlinpotatocommonlyincludesPRE and POST herbicides<br />

and cultivatio. Few herbicidesare registered in potato but recently rimsulfuronhas been<br />

commercially troduced. Rimsulfuroncontrols severalannualbroadleafand grass weeds and<br />

yellow nutsed e (Cu>erusesculentusL.). These studieswere conductedin 1995and 1996to<br />

evaluateherbi ide and cultivationtreatmentsfor weed control in potato. In both years, weed<br />

controlandpo tuberyieldincreasedwhenpotatowerecultivatedoncebut a secondcultivation<br />

generallydidn t improvetheseeffectsbyPRElinuron,PRE metribuzinplusmetolachlor,or early<br />

POST metrib in plus rimsulfuron. In the absenceof cultivation,controlof annualweeds and<br />

grassby metoD . treatmentswashigherthanby linuron.Yellownutsedgecontrolby metribuzin<br />

plus rimsulfur n earlyPOST was lower thanhad previouslyoccurredfromPOST rimsulfuron.<br />

In a second s dy, yellownutsedge controlwas highestby PRE applicationsof metribuzinplus<br />

metolachlorfo lowedby rimsulfuronPOST.<br />
