$2,000 t, Joe Neal for support of the publication of <strong>Weed</strong>s of the Northeast,<br />
and $2,QOOfor the AESOP group representing the <strong>Society</strong> in Washington D.C.<br />
*SSA Representative Dave Vitolo was called on to describe AESOP to<br />
the membership. AESOP is a private enterprise which provides proactive<br />
liaison Functions between its clients and Congress. The WSSA has committed<br />
to funding an AESOP staff member at 25% Faculty Teaching Equivalent (FTE)<br />
and ha~ asked the regional societies for an equivalent commitment. A WSSA<br />
Washirigton Liaison Committee has been set up to provide rapid responses to<br />
the nee~s of the AESOP group. Dave Vitolo is the NEWSS representative on<br />
that Committee.<br />

VI. Audit ¢:ommittee Report:<br />
.¢>anRamsdell reported that he and Grant Jordan had reviewed the<br />

books on January 4, 1996. They found an accurate reporting of the balance of<br />
the accounts and everything was in order.<br />

Awardr<br />
A. Innovatorlof the Year & Applied Research Awards:<br />
Brad asked Bill Curran, Research Coordinator, to come forward and<br />
announce the winners. Jim Orr received the Innovator of the Year Award;<br />
Larry Kuhns of Pennsylvania State University received the Applied Research<br />
Awar~ in Turf, Ornamentals and Vegetation Management; and Scott Hagood<br />
of Virf· inia Tech, received the Applied Research Award in Food and Feed<br />
Crops .. The Awards were previously announced and presented to the<br />
awardtes at the Awards luncheon on January 3, 1996.<br />

B. 1995 Colletate <strong>Weed</strong> Contest:<br />
iRon Ritter, in the absence of Past President, Wayne Wright, introduced<br />
Russ Hahn to review the winners. Russ acknowledged the generous support<br />
of fifteen sponsoring companies that supported the Contest. Cornell<br />
Univetsity hosted the Contest at the H.C. Thompson Vegetable Research<br />
Farm jin Freeville, NY on August 8, 1995. Robin Bellinder and Russ cochaired<br />
the event. Ron Ritter asked the membership to show its appreciation<br />
for th1ir efforts with a round of applause.<br />

• Dwight Lingenfelter of The Pennsylvania State University placed first in<br />
thq graduate division. John Isgrigg of North Carolina State University and<br />
Mark Czarnota of Virginia Tech placed second and third, respectively, in<br />
the graduate division. Top honors in the undergraduate division went to<br />
[irnmy Summerlin of North Carolina State University. Mark Brock and<br />
DEt>Campbell, both of the University of Guelph, placed second and third,<br />
respectively,<br />
