5.1 Historical Periods
The history of Palau can be divided into four main sections:
1. Time of Gods
2. Pre-contact ( before 1783)
3. Contact (1783-1888)
4. Modern (1888- present)
Time of the Gods
• Beluu ra Imeungs – one of the most well-preserved and important
archaeological sites in Palau. Imeungs was the eldest son of Milad, the
god who recreated Palau following the great flood. Imeungs represents
one of the four corner posts of traditional Palauan society.
• Medechii Belau – originated in Ngatpang and came to Airai
• Odalmelech – stone faces of Melekeok. Odalmelech was the god of
Ngermeled.
Pre-Contact Times
Contact Times
Modern Times
• Ancient Rock Island villages, caves, pictographs, traditional village sites
and remains of traditional culture.
• Badrulchau – one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Palau. It
covers an area of five acres (4 hectares). Pre-historic terraces exist
between Ollei and Mengellang villages in Ngarchelong. There are 37
monoliths (large upright stones) set into two major rows. The monoliths
were dated back to 90-1165AD. There are many stories about how the
monoliths came to be there. One example is the story about the gods who
constructed the pillars or the Portuguese built the structure.
• Ulong Island – an old village where you can find pieces of ceramic
pottery, shell middens and burial sites as well as pictographs in the
caves.
• Ulong Island is also the site where Captain Wilson was shipwrecked in
1783 and where the people of Koror assisted him in building a new ship.
• Consists mainly of remnants of intense battles between the Japanese and
Americans during World War II. The southern islands of Peleliu and
Angaur are the areas where most artifacts remain. Shipwrecks are
concentrated around Malakal Harbor, but found throughout Palau.
• The Zero fighter plane can also be seen adjacent to Ngeremdiu beach.
