glacial period, approximately 20,000 years ago, vast amounts of water formed massive<br />

glaciers. Consequently, sea level was over 100 meters lower than today. During this<br />

period, Palau’s lagoon was dry and Palau was a single giant, jungle covered island from<br />

the tip of Babeldaob to Peleliu!<br />

As climate subsequently warmed, the glaciers gradually melted returning water to the<br />

sea. Approximately 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, marine lakes began to form as sea<br />

level reached a height sufficient to begin flowing through the channels and fissures of<br />

the rock islands to flood depressions within. (Imagine placing the colander in an empty<br />

sink and then filling the sink with water.) The deepest lakes formed first, shallow lakes<br />

followed as sea level continued to rise. Thus, the age of a lake is directly related to its<br />

depth.<br />

ONGEIM’L TKETAU (JELLYFISH LAKE)<br />

Ongeim’l Tketau (translates as Fifth Lake) also commonly known as Jellyfish Lake, is the<br />

most well known of Palau’s marine lakes. Visitors from around the world visit the lake to<br />

see its spectacular population of golden jellyfish (Mastigias papua eptisoni)<br />

Jellyfish Lake is typical of the more isolated type of marine lake. Mangrove communities<br />

dominate the intertidal and its surface waters are diluted by rainfall to a salinity<br />

approximately 75% the strength of full seawater.<br />

The lake reaches 100 feet at its deepest point, however, plant and animal life are<br />

restricted to the top 45 feet of the lake. Below this depth, the water lacks oxygen and,<br />

instead, contains high concentrations of the toxic compound hydrogen sulfide, which<br />

precludes all organisms that require oxygen to live, including humans. Bacteria inhabit<br />

this dark, poisonous layer. The hazards presented by this compound are responsible in<br />

part for the ban on SCUBA diving in the lake.<br />

How did the jellyfish get into the lake?<br />

Jellyfish Lake is approximately 10,000 to 12,000 years old. With the exception of the<br />

recently and likely anthropogenically introduced sea anemone (see below), the jellyfish,<br />

like the lake’s other current inhabitants, are all descendents of tiny, likely larval,<br />

colonizers that were washed through tunnels and channels into the lake as it formed.<br />
