<strong>Rising</strong> 6 th <strong>Grade</strong><br />
Power<strong>School</strong> Online Registration and Course Information<br />
Beginning April 22, 2015, online course registration will be available via Power<strong>School</strong>.<br />
All sixth graders must register for their electives for the 2015–2016 academic year.<br />
REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2015.<br />

Note:<br />
1. Go to https://pso.lhps.org.<br />
2. Enter your parent USERNAME and PASSWORD and hit Sign In.<br />
Passwords are case sensitive.<br />
3. Once you’re logged in click the CLASS REGISTRATION Icon on the menu<br />
at the left side of the screen.<br />
All sixth graders take the core academic courses (math, English, science, social studies, and<br />
reading), plus Spanish. There is also a 20- or 40-minute Directed Study period as part of the<br />
required daily schedule. Also required are a semester of Physical Education and a semester of<br />
Enrichment skills in the areas of drama, computer, art, and science. These courses will be<br />
scheduled for you.<br />
Select your electives and alternates.<br />
Students may take music electives or non-music electives. Please choose either the course<br />
category of “6 th Music Electives” or “6 th Non-Music Electives” to make your elective choices.<br />
You will also use the course category of “6 th Alternate Elective” if you choose the “6 th Non-<br />
Music Electives” course category.<br />
1. Click the pencil icon beside each elective category to browse elective<br />
offerings.<br />
2. Click the boxes to select your elective course(s).<br />
3. Click OKAY to add the courses to your child’s schedule.<br />
Confirm your choices and submit your registration.<br />
4. Double check your selections.<br />
5. Once you are satisfied with your selections, click SUBMIT to complete the<br />
registration process.
Review your schedule and print your selections.<br />
Upon submission of your registration, you will be directed to a list view of your courses. This<br />
is a listing of courses ONLY. Numbers are for quantity tracking and do not correspond to<br />
scheduled class periods.<br />

Please note the specific instructions for each of the electives options:<br />
6 th Music Electives<br />
If choosing a Music Elective, please select S1 and S2 of the yearlong elective of your choice:<br />
6 Wind Symphony H: This course is an intermediate band class that consists of students with at least<br />
one semester of playing experience on a band instrument. [If you do not meet the experience<br />
requirement and would like to participate in Wind Symphony, you must contact the band director, Chris<br />
Greening, ext. 3309, before registering for the course.] Students in this course will experience all types<br />
of music; classical, contemporary, jazz, and rock. The band performs two to three concerts a year.<br />
Instrument rental is required for this course and is not included in the student tuition. This is a twosemester<br />
course that meets daily. [If choosing this option, register for both Semester 1 (S1) and<br />
Semester 2 (S2) of this course as your first elective and second elective. This is a yearlong course and<br />
you must register for both semesters.]<br />
6 Chorus: The Sixth <strong>Grade</strong> Chorus is a vocal ensemble whose repertoire consists of a variety of fun<br />
musical styles including classical, folk (music of the world), jazz, and popular. The students develop<br />
vocal technique, experience singing in various languages and build on their musicianship and sightreading<br />
skills as they expand their repertoire in preparation for performances. The students perform on<br />
and off campus throughout the school year. Students will have the opportunity to perform at Universal<br />
Studios in a choral festival in May. There will be a limited number of after school rehearsals prior to<br />
concerts. This rehearsal schedule will be given to students and parents at the beginning of the course.<br />
This is a two-semester course that meets daily. New Sixth <strong>Grade</strong>rs are welcome! [If choosing this<br />
option, register for both Semester 1 (S1) and Semester 2 (S2) of this course as your first elective and<br />
second elective. This is a yearlong course and you must register for both semesters.]<br />
6 Advanced Strings: This course is designed for sixth grade students who have participated in the <strong>Lake</strong><br />
<strong>Highland</strong> String Program in previous years, or for students that have at least one year of playing<br />
experience. Instruments offered at this level include violin, viola, cello, and string bass. There will be a<br />
very limited number of special rehearsals during the school day and/or after school prior to concerts.<br />
This rehearsal schedule will be given to students and parents at the beginning of the course. <strong>Lake</strong><br />
<strong>Highland</strong> does not provide the string instruments; students are required to rent or purchase their own<br />
instrument during the course. This is a two-semester course that meets daily. [If choosing this option,<br />
register for both Semester 1 (S1) and Semester 2 (S2) of this course as your first elective and second<br />
elective. This is a yearlong course and you must register for both semesters.]
6 th Non-Music Electives<br />
If choosing Non-Music Electives, please select 2 of the following electives:<br />
Note: Use this option only if you did not choose Band, Chorus, or Strings as your electives. Choose<br />
two of the following 9-week classes (one semester). Also, use the 6 th Alternate Elective to choose a<br />
third 9-week class as an alternate elective. Students using this option will automatically be registered<br />
for a second semester of Physical Education in addition to the one semester required for all students.<br />
6 Drama Production: Students experience all aspects of producing a full-length play for an audience.<br />
Plays selected will be musical or dramatic, or dramas with music. Rehearsals are held during the daily<br />
class time, with several after-school rehearsals and/or possibly one Saturday afternoon rehearsal,<br />
including dress and tech rehearsals during production week. Students will perform at least one, or up to<br />
several, school-day shows, depending on stage location, and one evening performance at 7:00<br />
p.m. for parents and friends. Students experience audition skills, acting techniques, developing<br />
believable characters, staging techniques, and improving expression and connection with other actors<br />
and with the audiences. This elective runs for nine weeks.<br />
6 Science Investigations: This course is designed for the dedicated science student as a culmination of<br />
the science studies in the Lower <strong>School</strong>. Topics will include inquiries and activities from the life, earth,<br />
and physical sciences, and may focus on current science topics in the news. There will be extensive use<br />
of technology relating to science throughout the course. Students will work with PK and Kindergarten<br />
students by designing experiments and teaching science topics. We will also team up with 6 Video<br />
Production for a STEM project (science, technology, engineering, and math). This elective runs for nine<br />
weeks.<br />
6 Studio Art: This course is focused on advanced techniques and composition in two and three<br />
dimensional form. Students will learn to build their skills by sketching and developing their ideas<br />
through a variety of expressive approaches. Projects include, but are not limited to, self-portraits,<br />
working with wire and plaster to create 3D sculptures, and silk painting. This elective runs for nine<br />
weeks.<br />
6 Video Production: This is a multimedia/communications course which introduces students to the<br />
various forms of multimedia through hands on projects such as: Garage Band, Podcasting, digital<br />
photography, Photoshop, Photo Editing, Storyboarding, iMovie, digital video editing, studio/remote<br />
production, camera operation, and Studio News Broadcast. This elective runs for nine weeks.<br />
6 th Alternate Elective<br />
You must select one alternate course if you chose the “6 th Non-Music Electives” category. Alternates<br />
will only be used if one of the electives you have chosen exceeds the course enrollment.<br />
For information only: Students are automatically enrolled in one or two semesters of Physical<br />
Education based on choice of electives. Students taking Band, Chorus, or Strings have one semester of<br />
Physical Education and all other students have two semesters of Physical Education. The Physical
Education program provides students with an environment that nurtures physical, social, and emotional<br />
development. Class instruction develops the student’s ability to work cooperatively with others and<br />
instills a positive view of fitness and lifetime physical activities. Regularly scheduled daily classes provide<br />
maximum physical development through progressive motor skills acquisition and functional learning<br />
experiences.<br />
