Duties of Lube Oil
Motor lubrication should …
• Create a sustainable lubricating coating (no energy loss on gliding parts)
• Reduce the friction on gliding parts
• Cool the motor parts (protection against over-heating)
• Keep contaminations (particles) in suspension (transform resin and paint parts into particles)
• Seal (ensure that gliding parts are sealed)
• Protect metallic bright parts against corrosion
• Absorb noise
The most important parts to be lubricated are crankshaft bearings, piston rod bearings, gudgeon
pin bearings, plungers, cam shaft bearings, cam shaft bore and piston bore.
The MAHLE Solution
• Defined filter fineness down to 25 microns absolute
• Compact and robust design
• Continuous filtration process without interrupting the
operation during back-flushing
• Small back-flushing volume and low pressure loss
through concerted 2 stage cleaning process
• No use of filtration agents
• Low maintenance and service friendly design (filter
mesh easy to exchange)
Design of the R8-40 lube oil filter
• Double filter insert
• Rotating filter mesh cylinder
• Fixed suction nozzle (pipe)
• Outer ring: Filtration from the inside to the
outside
• Inner ring: Filtration from the outide to the
inside
• Pleated filter mesh and supporting mesh
• Cleaning by clean medium (filtrate)
R8-40
Function of the R8-40 lube oil filter
• The suspension flows through the filter inlet into
the filter housing.
• The suspension flows through the inner part of
the double insert. Particle are held back on the
outer side of the inner ring and the inner side of
the outer ring.
• The filtrate flows into the clean section of the
housing and from there to the outlet of the
housing.
R8-40
Function of the R8-40 lube oil filter
• When max. differential pressure or the set point
(time) is reached the cleaning process starts.
• The filter filter element is rotated by the
gearmotor.
• With a backflushing process clean and filtered
medium flows at high velocity through the filter
mesh.
• The fluid flows in the opposite direction of the
filtration process. The retained particles are
removed from the filter mesh and flow through the
suction nozzle into the sludge line and the waste
oil tank.
