Video Children A series of four short DRR puppet
educational films: Tsunami,
Earthquake, Volcano, Flood /
Landslide. The key messages the
films contain are quickly absorbed by
children, and learning is fun. The
films’ main character, Badu, teaches
through negative example, always a
bit too laid back, lazy or downright
greedy to take disaster preparedness
seriously, and he is contrasted with
the Little Girl character, who gets it
right.

In addition to examining natural
disasters, the film entitled Flood /
Landslide, looks at manmade
contributions, such as illegal logging,
and the importance of protecting the
immediate natural environment.
This document details a toolkit
aimed at strengthening community
level risk assessment practice. It
also focuses on ways of
influencing disaster risk
management decisions, policies
and plans at sub-national and
national levels.
Four main features from the toolkit
are discussed:

+Even though the films were
developed for children, they are
suitable for adults. Short enough to
be shown to an audience without
them feeling as if they are being
spoken “down to.”
+ Films are short 5 – 10 minutes
and can therefore be easily
incorporated into a session for
illustration, or can be used to
stimulate discussion.

other materials.
