FROM THE EDITOR
CONTENTS
Hello Abu Dhabi,
I recently dropped my cellphone (a Blackberry Bold) in the parking lot of Marina
Mall. I frantically searched for it for four hours, retracing my step through all the
stores I had visited. I suspected that I had left it on the counter of Baby Shop.
When I told the manager, he went through the surveillance tapes to show me
that I hadn’t (pretty cool, thank you Baby Shop for the outstanding service!)
I called the phone from home but when no one answered assumed that
whoever found the phone decided to keep it. Four hours later I got call from a
polite gentleman named Maghrabi who said he found the phone in the parking
lot. Maghrabi took directions and delivered it to my home. Is that amazing or
what?? Thank you Maghrabi - you embody the spirit of kindness and humanity.
On the same tangent (of humanity) I feel compelled to share with you all, our
community, the plight of thirteen children (aged five to eighteen) who lost their
mother this month. Their father is unemployed and the family is grieving and
destitute. If you can help in any way please send me an email.
Kindness, Abu Dhabi. Pass it on.
Dear TEMPO magazine
SPACE
First of all I’d like to thank the effort paid to create such a wonderful
youthful magazine. I’ve enjoyed reading the November issue of it and
am always looking forward to read the next issue of the magazine
which I sometimes can’t easily find. I’d like to have copy and would
you please advise how to have one.
Abdullah Mohammad, Abu Dhabi Court
Hi TEMPO,
I have a suggestion for TEMPO to start a friendship forum or a
community forum so that people all over UAE can join and meet.
Sad Romeo
Ed: Sad Romeo, we’ll surely think about it (and please cheer up).
Ed: Thanks Abdullah, be sure to check malls and coffee shops for
Tempo issues (or join our email list and we’ll dispatch it to you).
Good day and a warm hello Tempo,
My name is Elsa El Osta and I love your Blueprint page and would love
to be a Blueprint model. Please do let me know how I can become the
chosen one.
Cheers, Elsa
Elsa, Elle will be in touch with you. Cheers, Ed.
food for thought for all you parents (and
those to-be) as you head into 2011
In celebration of all the babies who have come into
our world this year, here’s a reminder of how precious a
child is....a thoughtful read:
A teacher from a primary school asks her students to
write a essay about what they would like God to do
for them... At the end of the day while marking the
essays, she read one that made her very emotional. Her
husband, who had just walked in saw her crying and
asked her: “ What happened?”
She answered - “Read this. It’s one of my student’s
essays”
“Oh God, tonight I ask you something very special:
Make me into a television. I want to take its place. Live
like the TV in my house. Have my own special place,
And have my family around ME. To be taken seriously
when I talk.... I want to be the center of attention and
TWITTER & FACEBOOK QUOTES
be heard without interruptions or questions. I want to
receive the same special care that the TV receives when
it is not working. Have the company of my dad when
he arrives home from work, even when he is tired. And I
want my mom to want me ! when she is sad and upset,
instead of ignoring me... And... I want my brothers
to fight to be with me... I want to feel that family just
leaves everything aside, every now and then, just to
spend some time with me. And last but not least make
it that I can make them all happy and entertain them...
Lord I don’t ask you for much... I just want to live like
every TV.”
At that moment the husband said: “My God, poor kid.
What horrible parents!”
She looked up at him and said: “That essay is our son’s.”
NEW YEAR tempo BABY:
At 2am on January 1 a call came to one
If you were to invite your hero for dinner who would it be and why
Kamali
Age:16
Emirati
I would choose Al Pacino because I’m a big fan of his movies, he’s my
favourite actor, and if I were ever to act in a movie, I would choose a role
that was similar to what he would act as. Many people think I look exactly
like him!
I would ask him what his tips and techniques are about acting, and how
he keeps his cool when he’s playing tough roles.
I would serve him... definitely, pizza- just because I like pizza (and
he’s Italian)
Abdelrahman
El-Temtamy
Age: 19
Egyptian
My life-time hero would have to be Royce Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
legend, because his story and experiences in life are very inspiring
and motivational to me, and provided me with strength to
continue training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
If I had a chance to ask him something, I would ask him about
what his biggest goal in life is?
And I would probably serve him a protein shake... haha.
Dimitri
Alexseev
Age:16
Russian
I would invite Dave Mirra for dinner, because he has been very
successful in his life. He started out as a professional BMXer and
he made his own Bike Company called ‘Mirra Co.’ Then he made a
team and started professional rallying.
I would ask him what he wanted to do next in life.
I would take him to a restaurant called Chamas in the
Intercontinental Hotel.
Danial Khan
Age: 16
Pakistani
I would invite Ryan Nyquist, because BMXing is my favourite sport I
guess. He rides like how I want to ride (trails).
I would ask him about his interest in riding and how he got started in
his career.
I would serve him a nice 1 pound burger that I would make myself!
I would invite Justin Bieber, because he is our age and he’s gotten
so far in his career, and his music is inspiring and phenomenal.
What would I say to him?! I’d scream then tell him I love him and
adore him and love his work; I would also ask him how he got his
I would invite Beyonce, because she’s very inspiring and I admire
I would ask her how she deals with everything such as, helping
I would take Beyonce for Chinese because it’s my favourite and it
is from a different culture. I would take her to Shanghai Surprise,
my favorite restaurant.
My life time hero is Haile Gabreselassie, a famous Ethiopian
I would ask her what inspires her to do her work, and what regrets, if
any, she has about her past.
I would serve her a roast dinner because it’s my favorite type of food.
21 January, 2011, Abu Dhabi International
Who is Wang Jackson?
Wang has gained fame for his uncanny resemblance to the
late pop star Michael Jackson and for his incredible imitation
of the superstar’s amazing dance moves.
Wang is a Chinese impersonator and will perform his biggest
dancing concert ever, in Abu Dhabi for the first time. The
organisers Sky Events Management say the concert will be
enormous with special teams coming from China, America,
and England to make it happen.
The Chinese Jackson had met the real Michael Jackson a year
before the star’s death. They met in America and the star is
allegedly to have predicted great success for his Chinese
look-alike.
Wang has performed concerts in America, China, and
Europe, under the slogan, “Michael forever, and No
Bone up on facts about Abu Dhabi
CULTURE AND LEISURE
Geography lesson:
Spread across an area of 82,880 square kilometers, Abu Dhabi
is home to our two riveting oases - Al Ain and Liwa - that
together form an important part of the city. Abu Dhabi’s
coastline sprawls across 1,138 kilometers. The desert reigns
supreme throughout this region, and hence the terrain is
mainly flat and bereft of vegitation. The desert wasteland
consists of numerous sand dunes that are apt for desert safaris
in Abu Dhabi. The highest point in Abu Dhabi is Jabal Yibir
(1,527 meters).
Wild wadi bashing:
Wadi Bashing in Abu Dhabi is the thrill of driving on a dry and
rocky riverbed . A wadi is the parched and rock-strewn course
of rivers through rocky valleys carved out by floodwaters.
You can go wadi bashing while you are on a desert safari.
Wadi Bashing in Abu Dhabi is an exciting adventure. Expert
instructions are usually given to beginners going out in a hired
four-wheel driver to reduce the risk of becoming marooned
in the desert. October to April is the best time to go Wadi
Bashing in Abu Dhabi so you don’t not face the burning sun.
Qasr Al Hosn (Al Hosn Palace)
Al Hosn Palace is the oldest building in Abu Dhabi. This
building was built in 1793 as the residence of the then ruling
family. This building is commonly known as Old Fort or the
White Fort. The interiors of Al Hosn Palace Abu Dhabi have
been modernized. This palace is considered historical, and is
currently under renovation.
This is certainly the best place to review history. Al Hosn
Palace is known for its beautiful architecture. The work on
the main gate is particularly splendid. The magnificence and
importance of this place has attracted a large number of
foreign tourists over the years.
The palace, once opened, will showcasestraditional artifacts,
handicrafts and historical photographs. The exhibits would
provide an insight about wildlife of the UAE with special
features on animal life from the desert. The historical section
are expected to include displays of the history of the UAE, with
emphasis on Abu Dhabi.
MICROSOFT
TO LAUNCH
TOUCH MOUSE
Microsoft showed off its new Touch Mouse at the Consumer Electronic Show
in Las Vegas. The mouse looks like a very sleek wireless device. The Touch
Mouse works best for Windows 7 and is capable of letting you switch between
programs and applications just by making finger gestures over the mouse
surface. You can minimize the windows by swiping two finger down, and
move windows forwards and backwards just by swiping the thumb over it.
Touch Mouse will be available by May, 2011. Is there a market for this? Or the
question is, can we get more lazy, people?!
MOTOROLA DROID PRO
Are you out of office or even out of the country? Well you need to check out the Droid Pro.
The Droid Pro keeps up with your fast-paced life. Like a mini-o ffice, the Droid Pro by Motorola
lets you get your work done wherever you are, and let’s you do it more efficiently. You can
customize it the way you like. Access your email, calendar, social network sites and even the
news quickly and easily. From New York to New Delhi, Droid Pro’s quad-band capabilities allow
you to make or take calls from more than 200 countries. How is this different from all the other
phones that do exactly the same thing you say?? Try it to see if it delivers the convience it
promises. (Then drop me a line and tell me...)
PANASONIC 3DTV
A top mid-range 3DTV, the Panasonic TC-P54VT25 has
gotten top ratings for its reasonable price. It boasts
1080p and multiple perspectives are delivered nearly
flawlessly. Panasonic has partnered with Pioneer to
create a better viewing experience. A new filter has
been added to the new models to reduce internal
reflections. Furthermore, the Panasonic 3DTV’s easily
converts back to a high-quality HD TV. There aren’t
very many movies or shows specifically designed to
take advantage of the 3D effect, so it may be wise to
invest in a TV that can easily handle either format.
Biella
The Scene: Biella is good choice for anyone wishing to take a
break from the hard work of mall-trawling or thinking of a nice
staff lunch outing. (Tempo did the latter). Biella, at Marina
Mall, offers a comfortable and stylish restaurant setting away
from the echoing halls of the mall. Like I said, the interiors are
urbane and airy… very straightforward, just like the prices
on the menu. Service is a bit sporadic (sorry Andrew) and the
menu is predominantly Italian, so patience is required here as
everything is made from scratch. This is less eat and run, more
Mediterranean siesta...
What we tried: As soon as we settled down, it was only
moments before a basket of french bread and focaccia was
placed on the table. So we all did the olive oil and balsamic
vinegar dipping thing while waiting for the food to arrive.
The pizzas are always the safest bet at Biella. They’re light,
crisp and flavourful. The risottos are a nice option to those of
you who are arborio rice lovers, but an argument broke out
over whether or not the risotto was a tad on the bland side.
The seafood risotto oozed with clams, mussels and squid. We
washed it all down with fresh juice and it was all good and
wholesome! The meal culminated with green tea and panna
cotta for dessert- soft, creamy white flan served cold with
triple berry sauce....mwaaaaa...bellisimo!
CITYBITES
Where: Marina Mall • Price: Dh 200-300 for two
Granita di Arancia (Orange Ice Water)
FANCY ICE-CREAM
Ingredients
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups water
1 1/4 cups unsweetened orange juice
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
By Chef Dankel
Place the sugar and water in a pan over a moderate heat and stir until the
sugar is dissolved. Bring to the boil and boil for 5 minutes. Cool to room
temperature, then stir in the fruit zest and juice.
Pour into a shallow freezer-proof container and place in the freezer. Leave for
30 minutes and then stir. Continue to stir every 30 minutes until your mixture
is granular in texture and can be mashed with a fork.
Remove from freezer and serve immediately in individual glasses. Grate more
orange zest on the top for garnish and taste.
a DOC in the house
(aka a doctor from New York speaks on the state of public wellness in Abu Dhabi)
Your 2011 New Year’s Resolutions
So its 2011, and of course one of your resolutions for this
year, is in some form or another to get healthier. Everyone
does it...
Now, besides this broad goal, did you make any plans as to
how you might actually achieve this goal? Possibly, more
exercise, lose weight, watch what you eat, smoke less, drive
more carefully, stress less, etc...
All of these are great ideas, and kudos to you for even
proposing them and setting the bar, but now comes the
hard part........ You have to go out and do them. These
things just don’t happen on their own, you must make an
effort, and this is where (for alot of people) it all falls apart.
So, why should you care? Well for one, the fact that you
may have proposed these changes for yourself, probably
demonstrates that you have some form of self concern
(or you may be subject to peer pressure, but lets assume,
you are aware that its not good to weight 300 pounds).
For many people these goals are often set at improbable
heights and unlikely to be achievable by most mere
mortals. Maybe you have kids, maybe you hold a job and
even possibly, you have both to contend with. How can
you possibly find time to look after yourself? Well this is
where the work comes into it and the failure starts- before
you even start.
But realize, you don’t have to go down this common
pathway and that you alone have the power to make this
choice. You know yourself and your limits and you should
recognize this and respect it. Set realistic achievable goals.
this is real life, not reality TV. There are no camera crews
following you, no TV audience who are interested in seeing
this “amazing transformation” ( that should be the name of
some form of sadistic reality show). Its all you... It might
feel lonely, but you have the power to set the “bar” and you
alone are and should be the sole judge of the results.
Lets take a single resolution as an example. It’s a common
one, and I know it’s somewhere on your new years list.
Exercise.
You want to exercise (more)? Go ahead!!!! You only need
to set aside a small amount of time several times a week.
This could be the amount of time you spend wandering
aimlessly around a mall ( mall window shopping is NOT a
sport and does NOT replace any sport that I know of, so if
this is your idea of your best effort, I can assure you, that
you CAN do better). In fact, even better, because this is only
a small amount of time you are starting out with, you may
still be able to do that new found exercise routine AND still
hit the mall. Consider how much better you might actually
feel about yourself by making this simple transformation
of behavior. Alre ady an improvement. There is plenty of
scientific evidence that supports the notion that improved
physical health, also leads to improved mental health.
WOW, an added bonus, and who doesnt want improved
mental health? It’s certainly a better side effect, than those
associated with, for example smoking, right? ( high blood
pressure, lung disease, cancer, death)
We live in a busy society full of distractions, we hold jobs,
we have families and responsibilities and sometime we
feel overwhelmed, so why not be good to yourself and
feel good about it?
For those who are not particularly athletic, (don’t be
ashamed to admit it, most people are not born athletes)
be fair to yourself and make these goals realistic. Are you
really expecting to be UFC champion fighting fit after one
year of light exercise? Why even set your goals so high?
This is not going to happen and you must be aware of this.
Get real, people!!! But on the other hand, this should by no
means be a deterrent, either.
Exercise was just example of one often failed resolution
and how we can do this in an achievable manner. Exercise
is a broad term. Go out and experiment to find what
activity suits you. This could be swimming, biking, jogging,
power walking, or just a nice casual, but routine, evening
stroll along the Corniche. But bear in mind that there are
ALOT of actvities out there, and “the limit is between your
ears” ( to steal a quote from one of my favorite old school
skateboarders, Tony Alva). And of course, advance your
intensity as tolerated.
To summarize- find your activity, set your personal goals
but keep them fair, and get out there!!! You’ll feel it and
others will too- they may notice your improved mood,
outlook or your improved physique. Be consistent in your
approach and don”t rush it. You are doing this for yourself
and you alone will set the goals and limits. Keep it that way.
I can promise you when I say this, that you wont see me
at the hospital, having to tell you that the chest pain you
are feeling is indeed your worst fear or that your incessant
smoking is now leading you to impending lung failure.
Believe me, this happens, I see it far too often....
Hopefully I will see you “out on the field” sometime.
Happy New Year and lets talk health sometime soon.
Eklund (Christian Bale). Eklund once decked Sugar Ray Leonard and went the distance
against the boxing legend before forfeiting his career to drugs and crime. He redeemed
himself by training Ward through his Rocky-like run to the title. (Yes, we can take this
‘Fighter’ movie).
Abu Dhabi through my lens
Who doesn’t love the winter in the
Emirates? It’s the best time to travel
around, be it to the mountains,
the desert or a trip to the Empty
Quarter. I had heard about the place
but never had the chance to make
a trip, until recently. So my friend
and I started our long journey to the
Empty Quarter on a Friday morning
from Abu Dhabi. We heard the Al
Dhafra festival was going on too. .. all
perfect timing for our trip!!
Camels of different breeds and
colours were there, Bedouins too.
Along the way, I shot these beautiful
pictures of the desert. The climate
was pleasant and cold, and it was
perfect to walk on the desert sand,
with the crisp blue cloudless sky
above you, and the feel of cold sand
beneath your feet.
Art My Style
By ELLAINE FATIMA
Left to Right: Axel,
Andrew,Cante,
Dennis and Reslie
Well if you weren’t around on National Day at Al Wahda Mall to witness the painting of a flag
mural, then you missed out an opportunity to meet up with one of the best airbrush painters
in the UAE, Art my Style. Tempo caught up with the youngest one of the clan, Axel Florida and
he walked us through his work.
TEMPO: Introduce our readers to the Art my Style and
the shop.
Axel Florida: Well, we are a team of five who are really
dedicated to our passion, and that is designing. We started
off as mere painters and that’s where our airbrushing
career picked up and the whirlwind began. We first
worked on murals, then we moved on to laptops and
electronic designing then finally decided got heavily into
automotive designing and customization. Ninety percent
of our business now is automotive designing but as artists
we like to paint anything we can get our hands on.....if the
money’s right.
Abdulla Al Huraiz by profession is a rally car racer who is
dedicated to upgrade the performance of cars offroad and
on, and is currently racing in the DAKAR RALLY.
Cante Florida, had been building and customizing bikes
and cars for over 10 years, back in the Philippines and has
moved his passion here. I myself have decided to join my
father Cante, here as I help him visualize the concept and
to try to create mind-blasting designs. Teamed up I think
we make a pretty neat job!
Reslie is the electrician and the mechanic: he assembles,
de-assembles, rewires…you name it!
Dennis does the finishing touches to all the paint jobs.
TEMPO: Do you guys have formal art training?
Axel Florida: ‘The school of hard knocks’ is where I
attended, so everything is self taught. Well, artists always
“borrow” techniques from one another... so I picked up a
few tips along the way, but put my own twist on them.
But, the team was technically trained by one of the biggest
polishing companies from Germany which focuses on
detailing. So you can say we are trained by the best and
use the latest paint chroming technology in the industry,
emerging talent
from Italy. The chrome machine we use lets us paint on
anything from 80 to 100 percent in gold, blue, red, green
and orange.
TEMPO: What are some of your most recent projects?
Axel Florida: Currently, we are working on three special
bikes for the upcoming International Gulf Bike Expo, this 10-
12 February, as we will try to bring out the best of our ability
and talent on these bikes.
TEMPO: What was your most challenging paint project?
Axel Florida: Every project that comes to our shop is a
challenge. We try to cater to the satisfaction of the client.
When the client doesn’t have a design in mind and they
leave the job to you, the hardest thing is to come up with
a unique design that hasn’t been seen on the road. I wing it
with half the paint jobs, and it comes together nicely. I work
best under pressure. When I impress them, they reciprocate
with respect and praise, and that’s good enough for me.
TEMPO: What happens if you make a mistake in the middle
of painting a project?
Axel Florida: Ooo...that is indeed a challenge. But that’s
one thing about custom painting, knowing how to fix your
screw-ups!! Airbrushed shadows, highlights and pin
striping are a necessity and if the mistake is too bad, it can
always be sanded and resprayed.
TEMPO: Any future plans for the company?
Axel Florida: Apart from expanding or setting up
additional branches, we plan to be part of the evergrowing
racing industry in the UAE. We might even
explore interior designing too....like I said we’ve got no
limitations and we like to transcend design styles.
phrase, comes to my mind: ‘Never judge a book by its
cover.’ Sumayyah is a petite, young woman who could
easily pass off as a teenager going to school. She often
refers to herself as a giant in a small body. Though, I do
not think she is patently wrong, but I prefer to call her a
superwoman in an abaya.
Sumayyah, the superwoman, is a leading digital artist
based in Abu Dhabi. She runs a successful boutique
by the name of Grafika at Wahda Mall. She has a
successful career with ADACH. She has five children
and a husband to manage, as well as a full house to run.
She curates shows as well as participates in exhibitions.
She is also studying for her Masters at the Higher
Colleges of Technology. And if all that was not enough,
she recently published a book! Sometimes, I get the
nagging feeling that she has more hours than 24 in her
day.
Over a period of time, Sumayyah has gathered a lot
of feathers in her cap, but I was pretty impressed by
the latest - her book. Titled ‘The Art of Sumayyah Al
Suwaidi’ it is available on www.blurb.com for fans and
followers to download from across the globe. In my
chat with Sumayyah she told me “ I came out with the
book because I believe I am at a stage in my life, as
an artist, where I have accomplished a lot and a book
represents that in someway”.
I was curious why Sumayyah had chosen to have an
online book and she replied “Because my art followers
are from all around the world, so I wanted to give the
everyone the chance to own a copy of the book, and
there is nothing better than ordering it online and
waiting for it to be delivered at your door step”.
It made absolute sense to me.
Of course, not everything is as easy at it seems. She
also did a lot of research before she chose her online
publisher, blurb.com. But, all the hard work and
research paid off as the response has been fantastic.
“People are asking for copies, and some asked me to
hold a book signing in a book store, and some want to
see it in libraries. Different people are coming up with
different thoughts and ideas about my book.”
Sumayyah right now is working on ‘Peacock Collection’
which comprises 26 new artworks, and later she plans
to publish these in a book as well. There is obviously no
break on the horizon, as she also plans to curate a show
at Marsam Mattar Gallery in Dubai in January, a show in
Paris where she will be the only Arab artist, and a solo
at Art Sawa. By now, I am quite convinced Sumaya has
at least 40 hours in her day, because, I cannot imagine
how this is all humanly possible!
Petrolhead Paradise
yank in sandland
Several weeks ago I went to the Abu Dhabi International
Motor Show (ADIMS). This event happens only every
two years which surprises me considering the car crazy
culture in the UAE. I figured it would be an annual event.
The show was held in the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition
Center (ADNEC).
I have always been an incurable Gearhead (US) or
Petrolhead (rest of the world). At three years of age I
could discern different makes and models of cars as they
passed by. It is a native ability which unfortunately is not
a lucrative one.
Seems there is always something going on at the ADNEC
but this was my first time there. I have to say I was very
impressed with the facility. Easy access and parking
in the garage. The venue was squeaky clean and the
attendants and security personnel were pleasant and
helpful.
One of the first things I noticed on display was a pool
table made with a miniature 1960’s Ford Mustang body.
Very clever!
Inside the hall, most of the major autombile
manufacturers were represented. Notable exceptions
were Fiat/Chrysler, BMW and Mercedes. This was curious
as there is a huge market here for upscale luxury cars
in the UAE. In between the factory display areas were
mostly local firms with booths set up to showcase their
goods. Maybe because it was early afternoon and most
people were expected to attend at night, the women
hired to stand by the cars looked pretty bored.
One of the most interesting cars was in the Mazda area.
In my opinion, easily the star of the show. While it it a
concept car and most likely will never see production, it
still is a great example of creative design.
Hyundai had an interesting car on display also. They have
come a long way from the econobox they have been
known for in the past. I also saw a supercar with a
US $800,000 price tag. It wasn’t new and looked like a
one-off custom.
Anyway, there were some activities outside, namely
the white Prado obstacle course. You would think there
would be nothing left to prove as most are seen doing
200KMH+ in the fast lane but here ya go! They can
actually go slow too! This display was a steep up-anddown
ramp which the big Toyota negotiated with ease.
Then there was the Go Cart track. The concessionaire
made a big deal about changing into a race suit like
you are an F1 contender. I have to admit that it looked
like fun but at Dh150 a pop, I had to decline. The carts
sounded like they had Briggs & Stratton lawnmower
engines in them but the track was tight and suitable for
the speed.
All in all it was a fun afternoon. I love all things
automotive and this scratched my itch. The facility is top
notch and things were run well. The outside activites
were made even more enjoyable by the good weather.
