by Olivier Kohler and Alain Margot
They are young, sexy and provocative. These uninhibited members
of Ukraine’s avant-garde feminist group FEMEN conduct a
surprising campaign against the government, corruption and
sexual tourism. They are beautiful and proud to be so. They use
their bodies as weapons of mass persuasion. Their disturbing radical
approach to politics in this largely conservative country has
secured these controversial guardians of democracy an unusual
place on the contemporary political scene.
Forty-two years after Gaddafi’s brutal rise to power, the denial
of free speech, justice and liberty has given way to a new surge
of life. Set between the endless beaches of the Mediterranean,
joyriding around the fallen Katiba in Benghazi and the rubble of
the tyrant’s palace, this film presents three women who, in the
hope for a better future and the pain of past injustice, embody
the renewal of an entire nation.
The Mediator scandal in France not only disgusted the nation but
revealed just how the system can go wrong. Medical expert independence
is essential to ensure drug security. Conflicts of interest
are many and often kept secret. The pharmaceutical companies
who finance research, specialised media and professional training,
are often accused. But what is the truth ? Victims, doctors
and government health officials have now been heard. Many disturbing
revelations have come to light under the transparency
laws. This is an exceptional investigative report.
by Françoise Weilhammer and Florence Fernex
A growing number of cancer patients and scientists believe that the
spread of various forms of cancer in Western countries is due to the
deterioration of our environment. These new “cancer crusaders” say
that we are exposed to tens of thousands of chemical substances
every day, yet only 2 to 3% of them have undergone toxic testing.
This investigative report brings us to the heart of a green war
crucial to the health of those living in Switzerland, France and
the USA.
A film
by Béatrice Mohr and Isabelle Nussbaum
Has the Bible gone bling ? Traditional churches lose their glout as
evangelical preachers grow in popularity. Movie theatres, warehouses
and famous concert halls are used to celebrate a strange
marriage between spirituality, business and marketing. By-products
are sold, rock‘n roll cocktail parties are held as a new kind
of religious ceremony, stock traders get together to pray before
the market opens. This messianic approach to success is growing
in popularity, but its sect-like tendancies are disturbing. This investigative
report takes us to the heart of an opaque religiosity
that nothing seems to be able to stop.
A film
by Béatrice Mohr
Many believe that violence among teenagers exists because foreign
students are not well integrated into our schools. However, a remarkable
programme is now being tested in Switzerland. Learning
to dance together, especially the tango, helps children grow in
tolerance and respect for others. The smiles and giggles at hearing
old-fashioned music quickly give way to pleasure, play and a
certain form of new-found innocence. With dance and music
the idea of duty and judgement are replaced by the gracefully
syncopated sounds of the tango.
A film
by Jean Quaratino
The tattoo, once the illreputed sign of the rebel, has now evolved
into a cultural phenomenon and a full-fledged art form.
Having a tattoo has become a way of asserting one’s identity and
taking possession of one’s own body, of one’s own being.
Psychological armor, esthetic pride, somewhere between pain and
secret pleasure : tattoos are ever more popular, especially among
women. However, it can be a real obstacle course, a veritable
torture, to have them removed. A painfully coulourful overview.
A film
by Michel Heiniger
Pornography is readily available on internet and easily falls into
the hands of younger and younger children. Other than parental
control software and sexual education, how do we create new
means of prevention ? How do we define the borders between
fiction, fantasy and reality ? The police and school authorities
are dealing with a generation of teenagers who have grown up
on pornography. Some of them have already committed serious
sexual crimes. This film report reconstructs a recent event and
takes a look at an organisation known as Action Innocence. It
opens the debate as well as our eyes.
A film
by Emmanuelle Bressan Blondeau
What makes an ordinary man known to the social services turn
violent ? This film was inspired by the story of a 60 year-old mathematician
known as the “Mad Gunman of Bienne”. The elderly
gentleman shot a Swiss police officer and then continued harassing
the police force for 9 days. We examine several cases of
people already known to the social services who might one day
spin out of control and become a threat to society. How does one
intervene to help such people while still respecting their individual
rights ? An insight into the complex relationship between
our social services and their clients, at the heart of our society.
A film
by Emmanuelle Bressan Blondeau and Jean-Bernard Menoud
Switzerland is one of the only countries in the world that allows
foreigners to commit suicide. More than 1,000 people have come
to die with the Dignitas group in Zurich since 1998.
Dignitas openly defends the right to suicide for individuals, couples
and the depressed.
This “death tourism” is a troubling affair. Though the majority of
Swiss are in favour of assisted suicide, the government doesn’t
want to see the country become a centre for dying.
This extraordinary film takes us to Germany, Belgium and France
where we try to understand Switzerland’s controversial “death
trade”.
Specimen
www.tsr.ch/emissions/specimen/
A programme
by Eric Burnand and Bettina Hoffmann, hosted by Luigi Marra
“Specimen” - noun (latin “sample”). An individual sample of a species.
Are we all the same ? Are we all unique ? Why do we lie ? Live in
couples ? Help each other ? Manipulate others ? “Specimen” turns
to science for the answer and carries out all sorts of experiments.
Role playing, hidden cameras and tests taken by our volonteer panel
are analysed by scientific experts in our attempt to discern what is
real and unreal in our stereotypes and other shared beliefs. A lucid
energetic programme that joins science and humour in a sociological
study of our species in its daily life.
I’m Selfish, Neither Are You. What is the difference between selfishness
and empathy ? Does a “generosity gene” exist ? Between selfishness
and alturism, our behaviour is as variable as that of the animals.
The Truth About Liars. Though rationale and goals may vary, lying
seems to be fundamental to the functionning of society. For selfish or
altruistic reasons, for better or for worse, we hide things, cover up and
mislead all day long.
We’re All Manipulated ! Although we believe we are free, experience
shows that we are constantly “under the influence”. We are susceptible
to what others think or say about us, to goings-on at the pub, to
stimuli and pressure coming at us from every side. From our distorted
reminisces to manipulation of the brain, “Specimen” examines the role
of neuroscience in our daily lives.
A Taste of Money. Big-time spenders, independently wealthy or
deeply in debt ... our relationship to money is not always easy. Money
brings pleasure, but it also creates worries and unusual reactions. A pile
of banknotes in one’s hands is enough to strengthen one’s self-confidence
and creates a form of egotism that even builds resistance to pain.
For the Night or for Life. Humans are one of the rare mammels
that fall in love and live in couples. What lies behind the alchemy of
falling in love ?
Scared to Death. Fear is a natural alarm system that warns against
impending danger. Programmed since birth to protect our own
lives, we have developped numerous instinctive fears. Try wandering
through the forest late at night or push a spider-phobia sufferer into
a vivarium ! These are just some of the experiments “Specimen” performs.
A cold-swet programme that never forgets those who really
enjoy a good fright.
Me Jane, You Tarzan. Beyond cliché, behavioural differences
between men and women are very real. Is this due to hormones or
education ?
I Eat Therefore I Am. Why are we so readily suspicious of unknown
foods ? Why are we attracted to fatty or sweet ones ? Some people
can’t resist fast foods, others eat only organic and some follow high
protein diets. Changing our diet not only helps us stay slim but
directly affects our emotions and behaviour.
by Isabelle Moncada, Mario Fossati and Françoise Ducret
“36.9°C” is our normal body temperature when we are calm and
healthy. The majority of medical programmes approach health
problems from the medical world’s point of view, but “36.9°C”
takes a look from the patient’s side. What is the show’s strong
point ? It satisfies audience curiosity while still responding to
medical specialists’ concerns. Its obsession ? Discovering how
science today builds health tomorrow. Its bias ? Objectivity, being
clear, thorough and independent. Its character ? Determined,
when specific topical subjects require in-depth investigation.
the battle between industry, government and scientific experts
Is our skin the ultimate inner mirror ? More than the mere passage
of time, our skin reveals our inner conflicts, traumas and
repressed emotions through cutaneous illnesses that sometimes
last a lifetime. France’s dermato-psychoanalytic pioneer Danièle
Pomey-Rey has researched such theories since the 1970s. But
is simply “feeling good” enough to produce healthy skin ? It’s
actually not that simple. Psoriasis, alopecia and vitiligo are sometimes
so severe that only biotherapy injection treatments can help
patients recover hope. This sensitive investigative report interviews
patients and doctors to better understand the physical, social and
psychological suffering of dematology’s forsaken patients.
Seeing mountaineer André Georges’ quiet strength, we would
never imagine the incredible challenges he has faced. He has
climbed to 4000 metres 30 times in 30 days ; scaled 13 “north
sides” in 13 days ; and reached 8000 metres a dozen times. His
list of awards is astonishing. This 58-year-old wise man now
lives in an abandoned Swiss village where he and his partner
raise yaks. His words flow freely as we walk along and he reveals
bits and pieces of his life, of yesterday’s adventures and today’s
routine. A true mountaineer turned farmer whose tender heart
peeps out from behind a rock-solid shell.
A documentary series
by Béatrice Bakhti
Adolescence is a difficult and often awkward age. A period full
of dangers, discoveries, experimentations, dreams and tough
realities. This collection of four documentary films explores the
7-year development of seven teenagers from the age of twelve
to eighteen. It is an unprecedented immersion into the usually
secret world of adolescents who, with a rare spontaneity, share
over all these years their thoughts on love and sex, alcohol and
drugs, school, work and conflicts with parents. This is a unique
series that paints the picture of the contemporary family, but also
of an increasingly disorientated society.
An animated reportage
by Chappatte
Cartoonist Patrick Chappatte travelled to South Lebanon in February,
2009. He then created a comic strip about the war’s impact
on the population for the Geneva newspaper ”Le Temps”.
It is a simple direct description of the lives of people living amid
cluster bombs which could explode at any moment although the
war has been over for several months. Where can the children
play ? How can the farmers work ? What do young people dream
of ? Chappatte offers a sober, disturbing vision of a harsh reality.
In his attempt to remain as close to the truth as possible, he uses
intense black and white imagery in alternance with photos and
couloured pictures. His work is original, inventive and new. It is
half-way between documentary and short film, news reporting
and animation. A captivating approach to unsetting the traps
of history while making history accessible to all.
A concrete, personal approach.
A programme
by Emmanuelle Jaquet
Does TV always have to be one step behind internet? Not necessarily.
“Nouvo” deals with state-of-the-art technology, publicity
and today’s media. In a savvy mix of genres, “Nouvo” literally has
something for everybody. Quick, open-minded, innovative reporting
on a variety of subjects to take a good look at what’s going
on. Short-format “Nouvo” is a sharp-eyed provocative programme
where curiosity is king.
My Cow Is a Horse. Forget about milk, yogurt and cheese. Think about galloping, the Wild
West and horse show jumping. A young mother with a degree in philosophy has opened a
cow-riding school. The cow like you’ve never imagined !
Search the Housebreaker’s Ears. Small, twitsted, hairy, plump : burglers’ ears sometimes
betray them at our very doorstep. Better than fiction, “Nouvo” outdoes CSI ...
Botox Dampens Emotions. It eliminates facial wrinkles by paralysing certain muscles. But
what if it also eliminates our emotions ? Botox is the perfect culprit, the reason behind all the
frozen inexpressive faces that appear more and more often on our screens ...
Cloud Hunters. Having one’s head in the clouds is no longer a state of mind, it is now a real
hobby. Exhibitions, websites, reference book : welcome to Contemplation Land.
Karoshio, When Work Kills. Anything is possible in Taiwan, the high tech capitol of the
world. And this includes dropping dead on the job ! A never-before seen, disturbing vision
that stretches to the limits of burnout.
How do we save our planet without making endless speeches and
wasting time ? Ecology is now a major world concern. “Just A
Green Minute” is a stroke of the brush, a voice and sound effects.
The images are quick, vivid and they work. The voice is young,
modern and full of humour. Each minute-long sequence relates
the story of the character’s household adventures. But a minute
is certainly time enough for the message to be understood. “Just
A Green Minute” is interactive and civic, a mix of ecology and
lightheartedness. A small idea that really makes sense !
