u What influence does the takeover
by Sany have on your work? What strategic
advantages have emerged? Are Sany
developers already cooperating with
your team?
There were some important decisions
to make following the takeover by Sany.
Perhaps the most important was: “Putzmeister
will always be involved in the
construction of machines with the Putzmeister
name”, which means that in the
future, Putzmeister machines will continue
to be developed by Putzmeister in
Germany and built in a Putzmeister factory.
We are currently working on some
joint projects with developers from Sany
to strengthen Sany's position on the Chinese
market. However, this is only possible
to a limited extend because the main
task of the Putzmeister development
department is developing machines for
Putzmeister customers.
u Dr. Karch, you travel around the
world quite a lot. How many days have
you spent abroad this year? How can you
incorporate the various country-specific
differences into the technical requirements?

I don't really like to count the days! The
global structure of Putzmeister dictates
the need for a global presence. We have
structured Putzmeister so that each regional
subsidiary has technical representatives
who know the local conditions
and remain in close contact with
customers. It is very important to listen
to customers and understand their requirements
wherever they are in the world.
The countries involved in a new project
must be defined before development can
start. The project is then developed in
Germany in close collaboration with the
national subsidiaries and development
projects for previous machines have
shown that this works very well.

What you like to do in your free time?
The question is what you exactly mean
by “enough”. I always have some spare
time and if my professional role is exciting
enough, any remaining time I have is
also enough. I spend my free time with
my family whenever possible, taking
trips to the countryside, visiting cultural
sights or eating out in restaurants. n

“Feel the Elephant”
on almost 5,000 m 2 of exhibition space
At the next Bauma exhibition in April
2013, the Putzmeister group will be represented
over a much larger area than
previous years. The entire product range
will be spread over almost 5,000 m 2 in
the indoor hall and outdoors.
