factors, issues and forces that impact the course topic within the United<br />

States. Historical and contemporary perspectives will also be used to<br />

examine various cultural contexts and lifestyles. Involves readings,<br />

writing, discussion and travel. Requires domestic travel with expenses<br />

borne by the student. Credit may be earned in SSI 269 or IHU 269, but<br />

Prerequisite: BIO 152 with a grade of “C” or better. Presents the history<br />

of medicine, epidemiological methods, and current problems and trends<br />

in the health care system. Discusses selected global health care issues.<br />

Includes professional, legal, and ethical aspects of a multidisciplinary<br />

ST 207 Pharmacology in the Operating Room 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Surgical Technology program and<br />

concurrent enrollment in ST 210, ST 220, ST 230, and ST 240. Introduces<br />

anesthetic agents and other drugs commonly used in the perioperative<br />

setting: their uses, methods of administration, physiologic effects, and<br />

hazards or untoward effects. Credit may be used in ST 107 or ST 207<br />

but not in both. (30-0)<br />

ST 210 The Surgical Patient 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Surgical Technology program and<br />

concurrent enrollment in ST 207, ST 220, ST 230, ST 240. Introduces<br />

basic concepts of operative patient care, such as preparation of a patient<br />

for surgery, patient transportation, surgical incisions, wound healing,<br />

operative records, special procedures in the operating room, and the<br />

legal, moral and ethical responsibilities of surgical care. Credit may be<br />

earned in ST 110 or ST 210 but not in both. (30-0)<br />

ST 220 Fundamentals of Surgical Technology 6 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Surgical Technology program and<br />

concurrent enrollment in ST 207,ST 210, ST 230, and ST 240. Demonstrates<br />

fundamental principles of operating room function: roles of surgical<br />

team members, sterilization and disinfection methods, aseptic technique,<br />

surgical instruments, sutures and equipment, electrical safety, patient<br />

positioning and preparation, draping the sterile field, and care of supplies.<br />

Develops beginning technical skills through laboratory practice; later,<br />

operating room observational experiences are provided. Credit may be<br />

earned in ST 120 or ST 220 but not in both. (45-120)<br />

ST 230 Surgical Anatomy 4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Surgical Technology program and<br />

concurrent enrollment in ST 207, ST 210, ST 220, and ST 240. Presents<br />

comprehensive regional study of human anatomy as encountered during<br />

surgery. Provides the basis for studies of surgical pathology, operative<br />

procedures and practical skills of surgical patient care. Credit may be<br />

earned in ST 130 or ST 230 but not in both. (45- 45)<br />

ST 240 Operative Procedures 4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Surgical Technology program and<br />

concurrent enrollment in ST 207, ST 210, ST 220, and ST 230. Studies<br />

selected commonly-performed types of surgical procedures. Discusses<br />

the pathology leading to surgical invention, the purposes of the surgery,<br />

problems which may arise, and the consequences of the surgery for the<br />

patient, in addition to the basic techniques utilized during the procedure<br />

and any special instrumentation and supplies. Credit may earned in ST<br />

140 or ST 240 but not in both. (60-0)<br />

ST 250 Clinical Externship 12 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: ST 207, ST 210, ST 220, ST 230, ST 240, each with a minimum<br />

C (2.0) grade, and consent of the Program Coordinator. Gains supervised<br />

clinical experience in hospital operating room suites. Evaluates each<br />

student’s progress in the theoretical, behavioral, and practical application<br />

of concepts of surgical technology. Credit may be earned in ST 200 or<br />

ST 250 but not in both. (0-540)<br />

ST 251W Operating Room Seminar 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: ST 207, ST 210, ST 220, ST 230, and ST 240, each with a<br />

minimum “C” (2.0) grade, and consent of the Program Coordinator.<br />

Discusses patient-monitoring devices and diagnostic tests, abnormalities<br />

and correlations with surgical patient conditions, and surgery for<br />

traumatic injuries. Includes discussion of students’ clinical experiences,<br />

the professional role of the Surgical Technologist, general review, and<br />

assigned research studies. Credit may be earned in ST 201 or ST 251<br />

Prerequisite: READING LEVEL 2 or WRITING LEVEL 2. Explores<br />

the many facets of sustainability. Investigates how social, economic,<br />

and environmental activities shape all aspects of our planet. Develops<br />

sustainability literacy by studying, in a multidisciplinary framework, the<br />

interdependence of humans and the environment within historical and<br />

current contexts. Explores the working definition of sustainability and<br />
