RT 100 Basic Sciences for Respiratory Care 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: MATH LEVEL 4 or MTH 097 with “C” (2.0) minimum<br />

grade within the past five years. Introduces the basic principles of<br />

math, chemistry, and physics utilized in the field of respiratory care.<br />

Emphasizes the physical and chemical principles relating to liquids and<br />

gases as they provide a foundation for the study of respiratory care.<br />

Includes a required job shadow experience to become validated. This<br />

may require that students complete an online training session, have<br />

proof of a negative TB tine test and other supporting documentation<br />

before gaining access to the agency. (30-0)<br />

RT 117 Basic Respiratory Care I 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Respiratory Care Program. RT 118, RT 121,<br />

RT 126, and RT 131 must be taken concurrently. Presents the theory and<br />

application of skills required for the delivery of the basic respiratory care<br />

modalities of medical gases, humidity, and aerosol therapy. Emphasizes<br />

treatment of adult and pediatric patients with application to specific<br />

disease states. (39-12)<br />

RT 118 Basic Respiratory Care II 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Respiratory Care Program. RT 117, RT 121,<br />

RT 126, and RT 131 must be taken concurrently. Presents the theory and<br />

application of skills required to control transmissible diseases, to perform<br />

an appropriate physical assessment of the respiratory care patient, and<br />

for the delivery of the basic respiratory care modalities of pharmacology,<br />

incentive spirometry, and chest physical therapy. Emphasizes treatment<br />

related to adult and pediatric patients with application to the specific<br />

disease states. (38-14)<br />

RT 121 Orientation to RC 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Respiratory Care Program. RT 117, RT<br />

118, RT 126, and RT 131 must be taken concurrently. Introduces the role<br />

of a professional respiratory therapist from an historical, professional,<br />

and management perspective as well as the clinical setting. Includes<br />

CPR for the Professional Rescuer.(15-30)<br />

RT 126 Clinical Education I 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Respiratory Care program. RT 117, RT 118,<br />

RT 121, and RT 131 must be taken concurrently. Provides the opportunity<br />

in the clinical setting to apply and practice skills learned. (0-120)<br />

RT 131 Artificial Airway Care and Manual<br />

Ventilation<br />

2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Respiratory Care Program. RT 117, RT<br />

118, RT 121, & RT 126 must be taken concurrently. Presents the theory<br />

and application of skills required to provide care of the patient with an<br />

artificial airway and manual ventilation.(26-8)<br />

RT 132 Adult Ventilatory Care 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 117, RT 118, RT 121, RT 126,and RT 131. RT 135, RT<br />

146, and RT 149 must be taken concurrently. Presents the theory and<br />

application of skills required to provide adult mechanical ventilatory<br />

care. (39-12)<br />

RT 135 Diagnostics and Special Procedures 4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 117, RT 118, RT 121, RT 126, & RT 131. RT 132, RT<br />

146, and RT 149 must be taken concurrently. Presents the theory and<br />

application of skills required to perform arterial and mixed venous<br />

blood sampling and analysis, basic pulmonary function testing, and<br />

to interpret the results of and make recommendations for care based<br />

on these diagnostic procedures. Emphasizes the respiratory therapist’s<br />

role in chest and lateral neck x-ray evaluation, bronchoscopy, and chest<br />

tube drainage. (54-12)<br />

RT 146 Clinical Education II 6 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 117, RT 118, RT 121, RT 126 and RT 131. RT 132, RT<br />

135, and RT 149 must be taken concurrently. Provides the opportunity<br />

to apply clinical skills with emphasis on the critically ill patient. (0-240)<br />

RT 149 Clinical Ed 2 Seminar 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisites: RT 117, RT 118, RT 121, RT 126, and RT 131. RT 132, RT<br />

135, and RT 146 must be taken concurrently. Provides the opportunity to<br />

integrate the classroom and clinical activities of the concurrent courses<br />

in a seminar format. (15-0)<br />

RT 150 Cardiovascular Evaluation and<br />

Monitoring<br />

3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 132, RT 135, RT 146, & RT 149. Presents the theory and<br />

application of skills required to provide adult hemodynamic and ECG<br />

monitoring and interpretation. (41-8)<br />

RT 160 Transition-Technician to Therapist 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Completion of an AMA-approved Respiratory Therapy Technician<br />

Program within the last 2 years or completion of a Technician program<br />

with at least one year of work experience in the last 2 years; or certification<br />

(CRTT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care with at least 3 years of<br />

work experience in the last 5 years. Must be taken concurrently with RT<br />

235. Emphasis will be upon material in RT 116, 133, and 134. Successful<br />

completion of this course and RT 235 will enable technicians to enter<br />

the second year of the therapist program. Will only be offered if space<br />

in the program permits. (30-0)<br />

RT 207 Cardiopulmonary Pathophysiology 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 150 or RT 105 and RT 160 for the transition student. RT<br />

211, RT 212, RT 214, RT 216, RT 229, RT 226 must be taken concurrently.<br />

Presents the cause, clinical presentation, and treatment of common<br />

cardiopulmonary diseases. (45-0)<br />

RT 211 Advanced Cardiopulmonary Physiology 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 150 or RT 150 and RT 160 for the transition student. RT<br />

207, RT 212, RT 214, RT 216, RT 229, & RT 226 must be taken concurrently.<br />

Presents the study of advanced cardiopulmonary physiology as the basis<br />

for evaluation and treatment of cardiopulmonary pathophysiology. (45-0)<br />

RT 212 Advanced Ventilator Management 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 150 or RT 150 and RT 160 for the transition student. RT<br />

Presents the advanced theory and application of skills required to<br />

Provides an opportunity to research, write a report, and make an oral<br />

RT 216 Rehabilitation and Home Care 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisites: RT 150 or RT 150 and RT 160 for the transition student.<br />

RT 207, RT 211, RT 212, RT 214, RT 229 and RT 226 must be taken<br />

concurrently. Presents the theory and application of skills required to<br />

provide pulmonary rehabilitation and home care. (13-4)<br />

RT 226 Clinical Education III 6 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: RT 150 or RT 150 and RT 160 for the transition student.<br />

RT 207, RT 211, RT 212, RT 214, RT 216, and RT 229 must be taken<br />

concurrently. Provides the opportunity to review the theory and practice<br />

RT 229 Clinical Ed 3 Seminar 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisites: RT 150 or RT 150 and RT 160 for the transition student.<br />

RT 207, RT 211, RT 212, RT 214, RT 216, and RT 226 must be taken<br />

concurrently. Provides the opportunity to integrate the classroom and<br />

clinical activities of the concurrent courses in a seminar format. (15-0)<br />

RT 231 Maternal and Neonatal Respiratory<br />

Care<br />

Prerequisite: RT 207, 211, 212, 214, 216, 226 and 229. RT 234, RT 240,<br />

RT 244, RT 246 must be taken concurrently. Presents the theory and<br />

application of maternal and neonatal respiratory care. Emphasizes fetal<br />

development, the birth process, cardiopulmonary changes following<br />

birth, and neonatal cardiopulmonary pathophysiology. (27-6)<br />
