OAT 105W Time Management 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: WRITING LEVEL 2 and OAT 170 Keyboarding or equivalent<br />

touch typing and computer background. Explores the principles of<br />

effective time and life management. Develops skills in time management<br />

using a traditional paper planner as well as an electronic calendar. (15-0)<br />

OAT 116 Introduction to the Medical Office 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: MATH LEVEL 2. Introduces the pegboard system including<br />

day sheets, patient ledgers and receipts; emphasizes the accurate<br />

recording of charges, payments and adjustments. Includes introduction<br />

of basic accounting procedures including journalizing, posting, banking,<br />

payroll, and preparation of the income statement and balance sheet.<br />

Credit may be earned in OSE 116 or OAT 116 but not in both. (30-0)<br />

OAT 150 Business English 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: READING LEVEL 2 and WRITING LEVEL 2. Emphasizes<br />

the development of sound English usage skills. Emphasizes language<br />

skills that will enable students to perform effectively and efficiently in<br />

an information-based work environment. (45-0)<br />

OAT 151 Business Communication I 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: READING LEVEL 4 and WRITING LEVEL 4; or C or higher<br />

in OAT 150; and OAT 170 Keyboarding or equivalent touch typing and<br />

computer background. . Includes principles and composition of effective<br />

basic business letters and memos as well as accuracy in grammar, spelling,<br />

punctuation, sentence structure, and format. (45-0)<br />

OAT 152 Business Communication II 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Business Communication I (OAT 151 or OSE 151) with<br />

a C (2.0) grade minimum. Studies effective verbal and nonverbal<br />

communication in business. Emphasizes audience reaction, logical<br />

organization, tone, clarity, and accuracy. Involves career information,<br />

the research process, and reporting. Credit may be earned in OSE 152<br />

or OAT 152 but not in both. (45-0)<br />

OAT 153 Police Report Writing 1 Sem Hr<br />

Concurrent enrollment in CJ 101, LWT 175, and LW 280. Requires a grade<br />

of “C” (2.0) or better to complete the Basic Police Training Academy.<br />

Develops and enhances writing skills necessary to law enforcement<br />

including preparation of police reports, incident reports, summaries of<br />

witness and complaint interviews, and criminal case summaries. Credit<br />

may be earned in OSE 153 or OAT 153 but not in both. (15-0)<br />

OAT 155W Editing 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 151 and OAT 171 or demonstrated keyboarding skills.<br />

Develops proofreading and editing skills. Reviews business writing<br />

principles and the use of revision symbols. Emphasizes revising both<br />

format and content of business documents. Requires a service learning<br />

experience. (30-0)<br />

OAT 157 File Management 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 170 Keyboarding with a “C” (2.0) grade minimum or<br />

equivalent touch typing and computer background. Covers principles<br />

and practices of effective records management for manual and automated<br />

records systems using alphabetic, numeric, chronologic, and subject<br />

methods. Introduces database concepts needed for understanding<br />

automated records storage and retrieval methods including adding,<br />

modifying, sorting, designing, searching and printing. Credit may be<br />

earned in OSE 157 or OAT 157 but not in both. (30-0)<br />

OAT 166W Office Internship 3 Sem Hrs<br />

(Prerequisite: Minimum 25 credits completed in Administrative Assistant<br />

program. Student must apply for placement in OAT 166 in semester<br />

previous to anticipated placement.) Integrates and reinforces the student’s<br />

academic studies with related work of at least 180 hours at a designated<br />

work site. Seminars will be held on campus as a forum of discussion for<br />

career enhancement. (15-180)<br />

OAT 170 Keyboarding 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Develops the touch system of the alphabetic, numeric, symbol keys and<br />

the 10-key pad of the microcomputer keyboard. Credit may be earned<br />

in OSE 170 or OAT 170 but not in both. A waiver test is available for<br />

those who are proficient in typing. (30-0)<br />

OAT 171 Document Processing: Beginning 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 170 Keyboarding with “B” grade or better or equivalent<br />

computer background with accurate touch typing speed of at least 25<br />

words per minute. Uses MS Word to introduce the formatting of business<br />

correspondence, reports, and tables. Develops speed and accuracy on<br />

the computer keyboard. (45-0)<br />

OAT 172 Document Processing: Intermediate 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 171 with a “C” (2.0) grade minimum or equivalent.<br />

Studies the efficient use of MS Word for the production of complex<br />

business correspondence, reports, and tables. Introduces the use of<br />

appropriate punctuation in business documents. Increases speed and<br />

accuracy on the computer keyboard. (45-0)<br />

OAT 175 Electronic Calculation 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: MATH LEVEL 2. Develops the touch system of data entry<br />

for addition and incorporates the functions of addition, subtraction,<br />

multiplication, and division for various business applications using<br />

electronic calculating tools. Credit may be earned in OAT 175 or OSE<br />

175 but not in both. (30-0)<br />

OAT 243 Diagnostic Coding 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: HSC 105 and BIO 101W (or BIO 101 equivalent: BIO 140,<br />

or BIO 152 and 153, or BIO 171 and 172, or BIO 240 and 241). Presents<br />

diagnosis as it relates to physicians’ health insurance claims processing;<br />

includes decision making necessary for accurate diagnosis code choices,<br />

abstracting diagnosis from health care documentation, and using the<br />

current ICD diagnostic coding system. Course may be taken concurrently<br />

with OAT 244 Procedure Coding. (45-0)<br />

OAT 244 Procedure Coding 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: HSC 105 and BIO 101W (or BIO 101 equivalent: BIO 140,<br />

or BIO 152 and 153, or BIO 171 and 172, or BIO 240 and 241). Presents<br />

procedure as it relates to physicians’ health insurance claims processing;<br />

includes decision making necessary for accurate procedure code choices,<br />

abstracting procedure from health care documentation, and using CPT<br />

and HCPCS procedure coding systems. Course may be taken concurrently<br />

with OAT 243 Diagnostic Coding. (45-0)<br />

OAT 254 Medical Insurance I 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 243 and OAT 244; or OAT 250 with a minimum<br />

grade of C (2.0) or permission of instructor. Includes diagnostic and<br />

procedure coding, basic insurance concepts, and terminology used<br />

by health insurance carriers. Includes insurance claims for the major<br />

insurance carriers. (45-0)<br />

OAT 255 Medical Insurance II 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 254 with a minimum grade of C (2.0) or permission<br />

of instructor. Studies Michigan Insurance claims processing including<br />

case study, coordination of benefits, adjustments, deductibles, co-pays,<br />

posting of payments and resolution of reimbursement problems. Includes<br />

insurance claims for the major insurance carriers.<br />

OAT 260 Medical Transcription: Beginning 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: OAT 172, HSC 105, and one of the following: BIO 101, BIO<br />

131, BIO 132, BIO 140, BIO 152, BIO 153, BIO 160, or BIO 240; all with a<br />

minimum grade of “C” (2.0). Introduces cassette transcription machine<br />

operation and microcomputer to record physicians’ dictation of medical<br />

progress notes, operative reports, letters, and miscellaneous medical<br />

documents. Incorporates extensive practice and application of medical<br />

terminology, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. Uses<br />

various medical form formats. Credit may be earned in OAT 260 or OSE<br />

260 but not in both. (45-0)<br />

OAT 262 Medical Transcription: Intermediate 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: OAT 260 or OSE 260 or OSE 276 with a minimum grade<br />

of C (2.0). Develops increasing proficiency in medical transcription<br />

skills through the use of progressively more complex material and an<br />

emphasis on student self reliance in the production of accurate and/or<br />
