Develops cardiopulminary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external<br />

defibrillator (AED) knowledge and skills to the level of a health care<br />

LWT 175 Advanced First Aid and Emergency<br />

Care<br />

3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. CJ 101, LW 280, and OAT 153<br />

must be taken concurrently for Basic Police Training Academy. Provides<br />

knowledge and practical skills necessary to assist victims of injury or<br />

sudden illness. Covers CPR, wounds, choking, poisoning, substance<br />

abuse, burns, exposure to heat and cold, emergency childbirth, fractures,<br />

stroke, convulsive disorders, diabetes, auto and pool extrication.<br />

Successful completion of course entitles student to American Red Cross<br />

CPR and Advanced First Aid Certifications. Grade of “C” (2.0) or better<br />

in this course in order to complete Basic Police Training Academy. (45-15)<br />

LWT 176 Lifeguarding 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: Skill and knowledge of the five basic strokes. Provides<br />

knowledge and skills of the American Red Cross units and progressions.<br />

Results in certification upon successful completion of all the lifesaving<br />

and water safety requirements. Credit may be earned in LW 176 or LWT<br />

176 but not in both. (0-30)<br />

LWT 181 Adapted Aquatics Aide 1 Sem Hr<br />

Introduces swimming techniques, water exercises, simulation of<br />

disabilities, supervised practice teaching, and basic water safety involved<br />

with physical and mental impairments. Credit may be earned in LW 181<br />

or LWT 181 but not in both. (0-30)<br />

LWT 185 Water Safety Instructor 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: Current American Red Cross Emergency Water Safety or<br />

Lifeguard card and swimmer level skills. Provides theory and techniques<br />

in aquatics, practice teaching, water safety, survival swimming, swimming<br />

program development and pool and waterfront administration.<br />

Certification as a Water Safety Instructor may result upon satisfactory<br />

completion of the course. Credit may be earned in LW 185 or LWT 185<br />

but not in both. (0-30)<br />

LWT 186 Women’s Self Defense 1 Sem Hr<br />

Provides female students with information, tactics, and considerations<br />

that may be useful in avoiding and defending themselves against<br />

Living<br />

Presents nutrition science as a key element for optimal living. Plans<br />

diet, principles, food nutrients, metabolism, diet analysis, and the health<br />

effects of nutrition will all be evaluated and applied. (45-0)<br />

Prerequisite: LWT 210. Examines the metabolic and physiologic basis<br />

for macronutrient and micronutrient recommendations during general<br />

exercise, pre-season training, competition/performance, and recovery.<br />

Includes nutritional assessments of exercises varying in intensity and<br />

duration, training and recovery periods, and various sports demands.<br />

Provides an overview of the history and purpose of meditation. Introduces<br />

students to the practice of various meditation techniques. Emphasizes<br />

the role of meditation for concentration, relaxation, stress relief, and<br />

LWT 213W Vitamins Minerals and Health 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: LWT 210 Studies the various rating systems for the daily<br />

intake of vitamins; functions and uses of specific vitamins, minerals<br />

and other key supplements; signs of deficiency for specific nutrients;<br />

and recommends amounts of specific nutrients for average people and<br />

individuals with specific needs. (45-0)<br />

LWT 230 Theory of Strength and Conditioning 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: BIO 101, BIO 140 or BIO 152 with a “C” (2.0) minimum<br />

grade. Explores a variety of strength training principles and theories<br />

through the study of multiple exercise modes including free and machine<br />

weights, plyometrics, speed and agility, and cardiovascular training.<br />

Discusses specific anatomy and physiology, as well as exercise guidelines,<br />

in preparation for program development. (45-0)<br />

LWT 231W Introduction to Athletic Training 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Introduces students to the roles, responsibilities, and qualifications of<br />

a Certified Athletic Trainer (A.T.C.). Provides an overview of the basic<br />

knowledge and skills possessed by an A.T.C. including their role in the<br />

sports medicine team, nutrition, injury prevention, assessment, and<br />

treatment, as well as learning to identify emergency situations and<br />

provide direction for their management. (45-0)<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 101 or BIO 152 and LWT 251 or BIO 251 with a “C”<br />

become a certified personal trainer. Covers how to screen and evaluate<br />

prospective clients, design safe and effective exercise programs, identify<br />

physiological and psychological response to exercise, promote lifestyle<br />

behavior modification, quantify the energy cost of work (physical<br />

activity), and communicate effectively. Includes self-employment issues<br />

as well as legal issues. (60-0)<br />

LWT 241 Personal Trainer 4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: BIO 101, BIO 111, or BIO 130. Introduces the skills and<br />

knowledge needed to become a certified personal trainer. Covers how<br />

to screen and evaluate prospective clients, design safe and effective<br />

exercise programs, and instruct clients in correct exercise technique to<br />

avoid and prevent injury. Includes self-employment issues as well as<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 101 or BIO 152, LW 220 and concurrent enrollment<br />

in one of the following: LW 151, LW 153, LW 155, or LW 157. Introduces<br />

the skills and knowledge needed to become a certified Group Fitness<br />

Instructor. Includes how to screen and evaluate prospective clients,<br />

design safe and effective exercise programs, instruct clients in correct<br />

exercise techniques to avoid injury, and respond to the typical questions<br />

and problems that arise in a group exercise setting. (60-0)<br />

LWT 251 Exercise Physiology 4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 101 or BIO 152, and LW 220. Emphasizes the<br />

physiological responses of the human body to acute and chronic bouts<br />

of exercise. Presents the study of health/fitness appraisal, exercise<br />

prescription, quantifying the energy cost of work (physical activity),<br />

identifying physiological and psychological responses to exercise, and<br />

the administration of exercise programs to diverse populations. Credit<br />

may be earned in LWT 251 or BIO 251 but not both. (60-0)<br />

LWT 252 Environmental Physiology - The<br />

Limits of Human Performance<br />

Prerequisites: BIO 101 or BIO 153 or BIO 241. Emphasizes the physiological<br />

responses of the human body to acute and chronic bouts of varying<br />

environmental conditions. Presents the study of physiological responses<br />

to hot and cold environments, altitude, underwater and microgravity<br />

environments, and the effect of air quality on human performance. (30-15)<br />
