IHU 162 Projects in Cross-Cultural Learning 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Assign student volunteers to either community agencies providing crosscultural<br />

experiences or to an international work experience. Supportive<br />

seminars will provide both structure and background knowledge of<br />

the particular country involved. (A minimum of 60 hours volunteer<br />

placement is required.) Credit may be earned in IHU 162 or SOC 162,<br />

but not both. (15-60)<br />

IHU 201HW Honors Colloquy 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: LEVEL 4 READING and LEVEL 2 WRITING and permission<br />

of Honors office. Required of all Honors students. Explores the elements<br />

of critical and creative thinking. Emphasizes relationships among<br />

thinking, writing, and productive interaction with others, as well as the<br />

interdisciplinary nature of truth and knowledge. Includes project and/<br />

or research writing at instructor’s discretion. Provides opportunities<br />

to engage in independent intellectual inquiry to foster deeper learning.<br />

Credit may be earned in LIT 201H or IHU 201H but not both. (45-0)<br />

IHU 202 Women’s Studies 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Introduces the academic field of women’s studies. Explores the diversity<br />

of women’s experiences and achievements both in the present and in the<br />

past from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. Addresses social<br />

structures and the intersections of gender, class, race, ethnicity, religion,<br />

ages, abilities, and sexual identities. (45-0)<br />

IHU 210 Death and Dying 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 111, ENG 111A or permission of instructor. Studies<br />

attitudes, practices, beliefs, theories, institutions of death and dying in<br />

contemporary, historical western and also some non-western societies.<br />

Addresses issues of pain management, doctor-assisted suicide, quality<br />

versus quantity of life, organ donation, bereavement, the funeral industry,<br />

living wills and durable powers of attorney. (45-0)<br />

IHU 226W Introduction to Film 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Any approved <strong>College</strong> Composition I course with a<br />

minimum grade of C or permission of instructor. Follows the creation<br />

of a film from the original idea to final production. Examines film<br />

as a mode of popular entertainment and as an art form. Focuses on<br />

identifying the media’s components and developing the viewers’<br />

standards of appreciation. Credit may be earned in IHU 226 or LIT 226,<br />

but not in both. (45-0)<br />

IHU 232W Exploring Human Nature 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: A “C” grade or better in a college level composition I course<br />

or WRITING LEVEL 4. Explores the question “What does it mean to be<br />

human?” from interdisciplinary perspectives. Identifies and discusses the<br />

relative importance of traits and characteristics that “make us human.”<br />

Examines and evaluates major traditional and contemporary views of<br />

human nature and introduces alternative ways of understanding the<br />

self in relation to nature, society, religion, and the state. Credit may be<br />

earned in only one of IHU 232, SSI 232, or PSY 232. (45-0)<br />

IHU 234W World Religions 4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: READING LEVEL 2 or WRITING LEVEL 2. Introduces<br />

religion and the primary “living” religions of the world. Examines the<br />

principles and functions of religion, the origins and cultures of the<br />

world’s major religions, and their beliefs and primary ritual practices.<br />

Discusses and critically examines how religious belief systems and<br />

practices influence the thoughts and behaviors of adherents in everyday<br />

life. Credit may be earned in SSI 234 or IHU 234 but not in both. (60-0)<br />

IHU 240W Leadership for Positive Change 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: READING LEVEL 2 or WRITING LEVEL 2. Prepares<br />

students to lead positive change in a variety of contexts (personal,<br />

family, community/social and organizational). Includes: leadership<br />

development, problem solving, service learning, team work, global<br />

citizenship, sustainability, and social action. Provides opportunities<br />

for individual practice and reflection and requires “change” project in<br />

service to family, community, or place of employment. (45-0)<br />

IHU 245W Biblical Literature: Old Testament 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Studies critically the literature of the Old Testament. Examines the Old<br />

Testament Canon in its historical development. Also examines both the<br />

literary styles and changing theological and ethical ideas. Credit may<br />

be earned in IHU 245 or LIT 245 but not both. (45-0)<br />

IHU 261 Contemporary Art in Chicago 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Surveys contemporary art forms, processes, and ideas of the international<br />

art market in a 3-day visit to Chicago which will include the International<br />

Art Fair, the Chicago Art Institute and the Contemporary Museum of<br />

Art. Students pay tuition plus all of their expenses. (30-0)<br />

IHU 267 Producing A Student Publication 3 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisite: Any Approved Composition II or OAT 152 with a grade of<br />

“C” or better. Provides a guided opportunity to learn about publishing<br />

by compiling, selecting, editing, and designing an annual publication<br />

of student writing, photography, and artwork. Focuses on hands-on<br />

experience in critical reading, writing, and thinking; editing; layout;<br />

production details; marketing; design; and distribution. Credit may also<br />

be earned in ART 267 but not in the same semester. (45-45)<br />

IHU 268 International Studies in<br />

Interdisciplinary Humanities 1-4 Sem Hrs<br />

The student will do an in-depth study in one or more aspects of the<br />

culture, language, and history of Hawaii. Overseas study is an integral<br />

part of the course. Expenses for travel and overseas study must be borne<br />

by the student. (15-60 lecture)<br />

IHU 269W Interdisciplinary Study with<br />

Domestic Travel<br />

1-4 Sem Hrs<br />

Prerequisites: READING LEVEL 2 AND WRITING LEVEL 2. Provides<br />

an interdisciplinary study-travel experience focused on examining the<br />

factors, issues, and forces that impact the course topic within the United<br />

States. Historical and contemporary perspectives will also be used to<br />

examine various cultural contexts and lifestyles. Involves readings,<br />

writing, discussion, and travel. Requires domestic travel with expenses<br />

to be paid by the student.Credit may be earned in IHU 269 or SSI 269,<br />

but not both. (15/60-0)<br />

Prerequisites: LEVEL 2 Reading and LEVEL 2 Writing. Provides a<br />

foundation in knowledge and application of issues and principles<br />

surrounding diversity. Provides an opportunity to explore, reflect and<br />

practice an interdisciplinary approach to the study of diversity. Credit<br />

may be earned in only one of the following: SSI 288, SSI 289, ED 388,<br />

an opportunity to explore, reflect and practice an interdisciplinary<br />

approach to the study of diversity. Includes completion of project.<br />

Provides opportunities to engage in independent intellectual inquiry to<br />

foster deeper learning. Credit may be earned in only one of the following:<br />
