Applied Behavior Studies<br />

ABS 090A Successful Transitions A 1 Sem Hr<br />

Explores internal and external factors that affect college success. Examines<br />

the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to increase self-awareness<br />

and confidence; self regulation and responsibility; motivation and<br />

productive personal goals. Develops knowledge in creating effective<br />

habits in a supportive, student-centered class, and increases competence<br />

in effectively interacting with others. Does not earn credit toward<br />

graduation. Recommended for students needing or taking ENG 090,<br />

ENG 107, or ENG 108 and students who realize a need for further selfdevelopment.(15-0)<br />

ABS 090B Successful Transitions B 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: ABS 090A. Encourages student-oriented discussion, practice<br />

and application of personal and social success skills learned in ABS 090A.<br />

Focuses on time management, assertive communication, peer interaction<br />

and support, problem solving, collaboration, and cooperation. Does not<br />

earn credit toward graduation. Recommended for students needing or<br />

taking ENG 090, ENG 098, ENG 107, ENG 108, or ENG 109 and students<br />

who recognize their need to continue to increase their strategies for<br />

college success. (15-0)<br />

ABS 096 Resources and Responsibilities:<br />

2 Sem Hrs<br />

Must be taken concurrently with ABS 100W except when ABS 100W<br />

has already been successfully completed with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

Increases ability to meet college expectations in a supportive, studentcentered<br />

class. Introduces and uses multiple <strong>College</strong> resources and<br />

services (such as the Library, Teaching/Learning Center, Career Center,<br />

Counseling and Advising, Educator, college website). Assists in assessing<br />

and exploring individual strengths and weaknesses. Introduces and<br />

uses strategies to increase confidence, motivation, discipline and selfresponsibility.<br />

Increases knowledge and use of effective communication<br />

and teamwork skills and writing-to-learn strategies. Recommended for<br />

students with a combined minimum COMPASS reading/writing score<br />

of 65 and for students enrolled in ENG 090, 098, 108 or 109, as well as<br />

for students who have been away from formal schooling for a number<br />

of years. (30-0)<br />

ABS 100W Building Academic Success 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Must be taken concurrently with ABS 096 except when ABS 096 has<br />

already been successfully completed with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

Illustrates techniques for becoming an active learner. Assists students<br />

in exploring and using various time management tools; note taking<br />

styles; test preparation and test taking techniques; active textbook<br />

reading and review strategies; memory techniques; personal learning<br />

style characteristics and writing-to-learn strategies. Assists in assessing<br />

student’s emotional intelligence and ability to handle the stressors of<br />

college with a focus on test anxiety and procrastination. Credit can be<br />

earned toward graduation and/or transfer in only one of the following<br />

classes: ABS 100W, ABS 108A, ABS 108, or ABS 292. (30-0)<br />

ABS 101W <strong>College</strong> Success 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Explores academic skills and strategies needed for college-level learning<br />

and success. Examines effective personal attribuites/behaviors, available<br />

college resources, and general expectations of college professors and<br />

courses. Practices engagement in the greater campus culture and<br />

recognition of the value of learning beyond the classroom. Assists in<br />

the identification of individual strengths and the creation of a personal<br />

plan for reaching college goals using information from the course.<br />

Encourages writing, as a reflective practice, to enhance learning. (30-0)<br />

ABS 102 The Job Hunt 1 Sem Hr<br />

Develops skills in identifying students’ job-related abilities and attitudes;<br />

locating leads in the job market; writing resumes and cover letters;<br />

completing applications and interviewing. (15-0)<br />

ABS 104W Behavior Change I 1 Sem Hr<br />

Assists students in identifying, examining, and changing their selflimiting<br />

thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors. Examines the socialization<br />

process and the development of the social self, as they apply to personal,<br />

and individual change. Develops a plan for change. (15-0)<br />

ABS 105W Behavior Change II 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: ABS 104. Applies the Take Charge Theory to students, to<br />

others and to situations primarily through group activities. Reviews the<br />

American Socialization Process, explores social behavioral theories as<br />

they apply to personal change and growth, and practices the process<br />

of Creative Mental Imagery. (15-0)<br />

ABS 108AW Becoming a Master Student/Plus<br />

Practice<br />

3 Sem Hrs<br />

Combines the goals of ABS 108 with additional time for individual<br />

attention to student needs in using study and life skills practice.<br />

Recommended for students who want or need additional practice and<br />

instructor feedback or who are coming back to school after an extended<br />

absence and whose assessment scores indicate skills in ENG 111A range.<br />

Credit may be earned in only one of the following: ABS 101, ABS 108 or<br />

ABS 108A or ABS 292. (45-0)<br />

ABS 108W Becoming A Master Student 2 Sem Hrs<br />

Assists students in obtaining skills critical to their college success.<br />

Demonstrates and practices strategies in test taking, note taking, memory,<br />

textbook reading, and thinking critically. Identifies and explores college<br />

resources and life skills related to college success, such as personal<br />

responsibility; relationship building; health, time and stress management.<br />

Recommended for students with average or above average academic<br />

skills and high motivation whose assessment scores indicate skills in<br />

the ENG 111 range. Credit may be earned in only one of the following:<br />

ABS 101, ABS 108, ABS 108A or ABS 292. (30-0)<br />

ABS 111W <strong>College</strong> Expectations and You 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: Reading or Writing LEVEL 2. Explores information needed<br />

to make a successful transition to college level expectations for learning<br />

and success. Examines effective personal attributes, available college<br />

resources, and general expectations of college professors and courses.<br />

Assists in the creation of a personal plan of action for reaching college<br />

goals using information from the course. (15-0)<br />

ABS 113 Career Decision Making for Adults<br />

in Transition<br />

1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: READING LEVEL 2. Explores the results of and opportunities<br />

available for adults in career transitions. Provides experience in the steps<br />

involved in the career decision-making process through students working<br />

in a cooperative, respectful group atmosphere. Investigates personal<br />

values, skills, interests and abilities and explores a variety of careers<br />

using campus resources. Matches the student’s personal characteristics<br />

with careers and creates a plan of action to accomplish short and long<br />

range career goals.(15-0)<br />

ABS 200W Career Decision Making 1 Sem Hr<br />

Prerequisite: READING LEVEL 3 or WRITING LEVEL 2. Develops<br />

student ability to make career choices by focusing on the steps in the<br />

career decision making process (Self Awareness, Career Awareness,<br />

Decision Making, and Creating a Plan). Investigates personal values,<br />

skills, interests and abilities and explores a variety of careers using campus<br />

resources. Assists in matching personal characteristics with careers and<br />

creating a plan of action to accomplish short- and long-range career<br />

goals while working in a cooperative, respectful group atmosphere.<br />

Encourages writing, as a reflective practice, to enhance learning. Credit<br />

may be earned in ABS 103 or ABS 200 but not both. (15-0)<br />
