Medical Office Professions - Medical Transcripton Specialist -<br />

The efficiency of a medical office and the quality of medical care provided depend in large part upon the staff members who supplement and support<br />

the role of the physician. As a medical office staff member, you must have strong communication skills, organizational ability, computer knowledge,<br />

and excellent human relations skills.<br />

Medical transcription specialists enter patient care documentation into medical records as well as complete physicians’ correspondence and reports.<br />

They are also required to understand the legal responsibilities of medical office staff members.<br />

25 TOTAL CREDITS<br />

1. A grade of “C” (2.0) or higher is required in courses: BIO 101, HSC 105, OAT 151, OAT 171, OAT 172, OAT 260, and OAT 262.<br />

2. BIO 101, HSC 105, HSC 205, OAT 171, OAT 172, OAT 260, and OAT 262 are Key courses and must be completed within 5 years of completing<br />

certificate. Failure to complete within the stated time frame will require you to repeat this course. See graduation requirements page in <strong>catalog</strong>.<br />

3. HSC 105 and one of the following: BIO 101, BIO 131, BIO 132, BIO 140, BIO 152, BIO 153, BIO 160, BIO 240, both with a minimum grade of “C”<br />

(2.0) are prerequisites for HSC 210.<br />

4. Credit by exam is available for OAT 105W, CST 151, OAT 171, and OAT 172. Keyboarding waiver test is available for OAT 170. Contact the BIT<br />

Division office, 989-686-9127, to arrange for waiver test.<br />

5. OAT 170 with a “B” grade or better or equivalient computer background with accurate touch typing speed of at least 25 words per minute is a prerequisite<br />

for OAT 171.<br />

6. OAT 262 is a fall-only offering.<br />

7. File an application for an associate or dual degree and/or certificate with the Registrar’s Office by at least 3 months prior to expected graduation.<br />
