B. Non-Regionally Accredited Institutions<br />

Courses that apply toward a <strong>Delta</strong> occupational Certificate/Associate<br />

degree program will be considered according to the following if they<br />

were completed with a grade of “C” (2.0) or above at institutions recognized<br />

and approved by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation<br />

(CHEA):<br />

1. Transcripts will be forwarded for evaluation of the occupational<br />

courses to the appropriate Division Chair or Discipline Coordinator.<br />

The following Options are available to the Division Chairs<br />

or discipline Coordinators:<br />

a. Equivalent <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> credit may be granted upon review of<br />

course outlines, and/or course descriptions, and/or appropriate<br />

descriptive materials. It is the responsibility of the student to<br />

provide any requested materials to enable proper evaluation.<br />

b. Equivalent <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> credit may be granted after successful<br />

completion of <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> courses at the subsequent level.<br />

c. Equivalent <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> credit may be granted upon demonstration<br />

of proficiency via examination, interview, or other<br />

appropriate evaluation means as determined by the appropriate<br />

Division Chair or Program Director.<br />

d. Credit may not be granted.<br />

2. No credit will be granted for General Education courses.<br />

C. Foreign Institutions<br />

<strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> evaluates foreign institution transcripts after they have<br />

been submitted to a foreign evaluating service which will then forward<br />

the official results of their evaluation to <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> for credit<br />

evaluation. You may choose to have your transcripts evaluated by<br />

any evaluating service, (for example):<br />

• World Education Services, Inc. (WES) www.wes.org<br />

• Education Credential Evaluators (ECE) www.ece.org<br />

D. Non-Traditional Credit<br />

1. Military credit<br />

a. All veterans having a certified DD214 form on file in the<br />

Veteran Services Office will be granted credit for LW221 and<br />

two lifelong wellness theory (LWT) credits.<br />

b. Veterans who have taken educational programs during military<br />

service may, under certain conditions, receive elective credit<br />

for that work. The Guide to the Evaluation of Educational<br />

Experiences in the Armed Services by the American Council<br />

of Education is used to determine these elective credits.<br />

c. Courses completed at accredited military colleges, such as<br />

The Community <strong>College</strong> of the Air Force, may result in the<br />

awarding of transfer credit.<br />

2. Certified Training<br />

Academic Credit can be granted for the following types of training<br />

programs and exams provided criteria for the award of credit is met.<br />

a. Certified Professional Secretary Exam<br />

b. Child Development Associate credential<br />

c. Current State of Michigan Cosmetology License<br />

d. Current State of Michigan EMT License<br />

e. Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council<br />

f. Current State of Michigan Paramedic License<br />

g. Skilled Trades Journeyman Card<br />

h. First Aid Card<br />

3. Correspondence Courses<br />

Credit granted by correspondence from regionally accredited institutions<br />

will transfer to <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> according to the guidelines<br />

for equivalent and non-equivalent credit as outlined.<br />

E. Credit for Prior Learning<br />

You may be granted academic credit for prior learning in many areas<br />

of study at <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The Credit For Prior Learning Options are<br />

designed for students who have gained, through related work experience<br />

and/or training, learning that may be equivalent to the outcomes<br />

and objectives taught in actual <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> courses.<br />

Credit for Prior Learning is assessed by one or more of the following Options:<br />

1. Credit By Exam (CBE): comprehensive course challenge examinations<br />

that are developed and evaluated by <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> faculty.<br />

If you earn a passing grade on a CBE examination, the course<br />

credit(s) will be recorded on your academic transcript. There is<br />

a per credit hour attempted fee for all CBE examinations. A CBE<br />

may be taken only once per course. Retesting is not allowed. If<br />

you are interested in waiver credit, we recommend that you<br />

discuss that option with your academic counselor/advisor.<br />

2. Credit By Portfolio: an individualized process in which you<br />

comprehensively document how your work experience directly<br />

relates to the outcomes and objectives of a <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> academic<br />

course. All portfolios are reviewed and evaluated by the faculty<br />

member(s) who teach that course. A typical portfolio application<br />

includes a current resume, personal manuscript, professional<br />

references, and supporting documentation. A non-refundable<br />

per credit hour attempted fee must be paid before your portfolio<br />

application is submitted to the appropriate Academic Division for<br />

consideration. If your portfolio application is approved, the earned<br />

course credit(s) will be recorded on your academic transcript.<br />

3. Credit By Training: an individualized process in which you earn academic<br />

credit for <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> Training Programs. If you believe that<br />

you qualify for this option, contact Assessment/Testing Services.<br />

4. <strong>College</strong> Level Examination Program (CLEP) or Defense Activity<br />

for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DANTES): national<br />

standardized tests in selected academic areas. Students can earn<br />

credit for CLEP and/or DANTES examinations that have been<br />

approved by the Academic division(s) as equivalent to specific<br />

<strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> courses. The application forms, course equivalents,<br />

and minimum passing scores for the examinations accepted by<br />

<strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> for academic credit are available from Assessment/<br />

Testing Services. There is an examination fee and a non-refundable<br />

administration/service fee charged for each examination. You must<br />

request that CLEP or DANTES send an official transcript of your<br />

examination score(s) to <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> Admissions Office. Upon<br />

receipt of successful examination scores, <strong>Delta</strong> <strong>College</strong> Records<br />

will record the appropriate credit on your academic transcript.<br />

If you are interested in any of these Credit for Prior Learning Options,<br />

please be aware that the following restrictions may apply:<br />

• Credit for Prior Learning is not available in all areas of study.<br />

• Credit for Prior Learning credits may not be transferrable to<br />

other institutions.<br />

• Financial Aid cannot be used for Credit for Prior Learning fees.<br />

• You may only apply for credit one time per course.<br />
