Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
THE ELIZABETH HAMILTON
CULLUM SOCIETY
THE ELIZABETH
HAMILTON CULLUM
SOCIETY
A society to honor those who, through estate and
financial planning, have partnered with Memorial
Sloan-Kettering in the fight against cancer.
Our Story
In 1884, Elizabeth Hamilton Cullum called together a group of friends
to discuss the possibility of a hospital designed exclusively for the
treatment of cancer. A granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, who
was the first Secretary of the Treasury and a signer of the Constitution,
Mrs. Cullum believed in using her influence for the greater good. She
also had a personal interest in cancer; her only son died of the disease
in 1882 and less than a year later, she learned that she too, had cancer.
At that time, cancer patients were often turned away from hospitals
due to lack of understanding and widespread fear of the disease.
Mrs. Cullum and her friends passionately believed that cancer should be
confronted rather than feared. This shared mission moved the group, led
by Mrs. Cullum, to found the New York Cancer Hospital, which would
later become Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Today, Memorial
Sloan-Kettering is the oldest and largest privately supported cancer center
in the world.
Mrs. Cullum’s exceptional generosity during her lifetime stands as a
milestone in the history of philanthropic support for more scientific and
humane care of cancer patients. Her commitment to improving cancer
care prompted Mrs. Cullum to leave her entire estate to the New York
Cancer Hospital, creating the first charitable legacy in the Center’s history.
Our Purpose
Over the years, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has gratefully
enjoyed the support of friends who have included the Center in their
financial and estate plans. The Elizabeth Hamilton Cullum Society honors
generous friends who have made planned gifts to the Center. This society
recognizes donors who, like Mrs. Cullum, are committed to supporting
the work that brings us closer to a world free of cancer. Members also
enjoy several special events and benefits as our way of saying thank you for
joining us in the fight to end cancer.
