LOOK WHO’S TALKING!
FIRST-HAND ACCOUNTS FROM OUR PATIENTS
Effective Treatment
My sincere thanks to Dr Lajja for the
treatment given to my daughter, Shreya
Menon. Following her treatment, my
daughter's health has improved remarkably;
she has also become active. Before coming
to Dr Batra’s, my daughter used to fall sick
quite often. That’s when we decided to
switch over to Homeopathy, as it does not
have any side-effects. After nearly two years
of treatment, we now find Shreya to be
stable; her recurrent cold/coughs too are
almost gone. We are extremely happy with
the treatment given at Dr Batra’s.
– Ramesh Menon, Kandivili
Confidence Regained
I came to Dr Batra’s with the following
complaints: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
[OCD], anxiety and hormonal imbalance. I
was put under Dr Prasanna and Dr Manu
Bhalla's care and treatment. The doctor duo
treated me for my problems. I am happy to
say that my problems are now under control.
I feel I am more confident and also in charge
of things around me. Many thanks to Dr
Batra’s Noida Clinic and my doctors.
– Pupul Pachauri, Noida
Adenoids Calmed
Our son, Jerom Jaison, had adenoids problem
and mouth breathing while sleeping when we
came to Dr Batra’s Clinic. Now, after one
year of treatment under Dr Preethi and Dr
Parul, his rate of progress has been steady and
impressive. The treatment he received at Dr
Batra’s is very good. We appreciate his two
doctors and staff for their pleasing behaviour
and care.
– Jerom’s Mother, Noida
Warts Gone
Since long I had tried various medications
for my facial warts with no result. Following
Homeopathic treatment, under Dr Sanjay's
care, at your Malleswaram Clinic, I am
completely relieved of the problem. All this
happened within a short period of time.
Thank you very much Dr Sanjay and team
at Dr Batra’s!
– C Prabhu, Malleswaram
Ornamental Blessing
I am very grateful to Dr Batra’s for treating my 14-year-old daughter Kinita, who was suffering
from skin rash and allergy. She could not wear any ornament, artificial or real [gold]. We tried
various treatments, but lost hope. When we discussed Kinita’s problem at Dr Batras’ Clinic, we
hoped Homeopathy would work. It did. A few months of treatment has relieved her problem
completely. She can now wear any ornament without any problem. She’s happy; so are we. Our
sincere thanks to Dr Batra’s!
WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED
Hobby Benefits
We live in troubled times. Besides,
there is so much of pressure in life,
home, and work. So much so, we often lose
our feel for basic things — as to who we are,
or what we are. It is in situations such as
these that a hobby, simple or artistic,
becomes a god-sent diversion. It offers
respite from our pressure - cooker
circumstance, or situation. It helps us to seek
our inner self.
A hobby is a passion. It is a relaxation
technique too. To appreciate life. To
appreciate nature, beauty, art, or just about
anything you’d relate to… or, connect.
For me, my hobbies provide the natural grist
to my passionate mill. Photography is one of
my favourite hobbies, or pastime. So is music.
I travel a fair bit. Wherever I go, I carry my
camera. It’s not just a camera; it is my
philosopher and guide. I take pictures
whenever I can. I keep adding them to my
collection, a photo library of my own.
I love to use some of my best photographs for
a cause. I organise photo exhibitions. All
proceeds are given to charity. There’s one of
We don’t pick, or choose, a hobby to show-
off, or engage in spending a fortune to
cultivate, or expand, on it. You pick up a
hobby not to impress others, but to please
yourself. It’s like a friend — a buddy who
never hits you back.
my photo exhibitions that gets underway this
month, at NCPA [Mumbai] — my sixth
exposition. For me, a photo is just not a
picture. It is life. It isn’t merely a hobby — it's
a passion like no other. A way of saying
thanks to my family, well-wishers, friends,
and my patients.
Do you have a hobby? I’m sure you have one
too. If you don’t have one, think of the one
you’d love to develop as a leisure pursuit. You
will be healthy, happy, and spiritually fulfilled
for it.
CASE OF THE MONTH
Itch Relief
Jayanta Chakraborty [41] first walked into
our Kolkata Clinic, with a reluctant
expression on his face.
He had been living with symptoms of
recurrent itchy, papular eruptions on his legs
and arms for over 15 years.
His problem was diagnosed as dermatitis, an
inflammatory skin disease. He was on
conventional treatment for long, but in vain.
Conventional treatment temporarily
reduced his symptoms, but it did not offer
long-term relief. It was at this stage that he
turned to Homeopathy. Since Homeopathy
was new to him, he seemed to be sceptical
about the results, albeit he wanted to give it a
real good try.
Jayanta was short in stature. A detailed case
analysis revealed his sympathetic, generous
nature and love for eggs and shopping.
After being educated about his skin
condition, he was prescribed Calcarea
Phosphorica 200C , based on his emotional
and physical states, along with dietary
modifications.
He was also advised to practice stressrelieving
techniques.
As the treatment progressed, Jayanta’s
eruptions started decreasing; his itching too
subsided.
With further treatment, the lesions
improved dramatically. This instilled
confidence in him for Homeopathy.
Before Treatment
He happily exclaims that even though all
Homeopathic pills look and taste alike, they
perform miracles.
After Treatment
His sparkling eyes now reflect his optimism
and pride for Homeopathy, and Dr Batra's.
TABLE TALK
Be Supplement Savvy
D
o you think you are eating an ideal diet,
including legumes and whole grains?
Yes. But, do you know that there are still
some essential nutrients that you are going to
have a hard time getting. As we age, our body
has a tough time absorbing certain nutrients,
or producing certain nutrients, which were
an easy thing to do when you were younger.
What’s more, when we age we also need
some supplements more than, perhaps, when
we were younger.
The best thing to do is to opt for a good
vitamin-mineral-cocktail which anyone
should be taking, daily, as a preventative, and
also as a therapeutic, measure:
Vitamin C, 500-1,000 mg
Vitamin E, 200 mg
Selenium, 200 mcg, to be taken with food,
preferably in a meal.
Mixed carotenoids
Folic acid, 400 mcg
Vitamin D, 1,000 IU
Calcium citrate, 500-1,000 mg.
In addition, oily fish should be consumed at
least twice a week. If this is not possible, for
whatever reason, it is important to take
flaxseed in powder form [2 tbsp] or in
capsule form 1-2 gm per day. Make sure to
keep yourself well hydrated.
There are so many good supplements that
can be included in your daily diet plan. It is
important not to become too fancied about
them. When you introduce supplements
into your daily regimen, don’t take them all
at once; divide them. Take 2-3 of them with
breakfast; the others with lunch, or dinner.
You’d also be selective when taking
supplements. You need to research the
product extensively, including the company
from which you are buying the supplement/s.
Nutritional supplements are suggested to be
helpful for optimal health and well-being,
including age-related disorders. Remember,
you are responsible for what you choose to
take and how much of it you choose to take
too. Make sure you fine-tune them
according to your own personal needs,
preferably in consultation with your
doctor/dietician/therapist.
PANCREATITIS AND HOMEOPATHY
When A Gland Rebels
n our fast-paced life, health problems
Ialways seem to lurk somewhere in the
corner. We sometimes do not know what has
hit us; we only know it when a problem hits
us badly. Think of pancreatitis, a sort of
"galloping" disorder, as one such example.
This was the case with Manish who visited
our Clinic. Manish complained of recurrent
bouts of jaundice, accompanied by fever,
acute abdominal pain, dyspepsia
[hyperacidity], and fatty stools. His
complaints troubled him to such an extent
that he was not able to perform his routine
chores. He was diagnosed with chronic
pancreatitis by conventional doctors. He was
put on conventional medications — but,
nothing worked. Tired of medications, he
came to us as a possible, alternative option.
Temperament Holds The Key
A detailed case analysis revealed that
Manish indulged in alcohol and gambling.
He was extremely nasty and aggressive; yet,
obsessively concerned about his health.
Manish was prescribed Kali Iodatum 200C,
based on his mental and physical states.
Apart from Homeopathic medicines, he was
advised dietary modifications and 45
minutes' daily walk to reduce weight.
As the treatment progressed, Manish did not
have any fresh episode of jaundice, or
symptoms of pancreatitis. The abdominal
pains receded considerably; his diarrhoeal
problems became less frequent. He was soon
able to perform his daily tasks. Investigations
now revealed he was normal; and, free from
illness. His medicines were discontinued.
Pancreatitis is an inflammatory disorder of
the pancreas. It can occur in two different
forms— acute and chronic. Acute
pancreatitis is sudden; it lasts for short
periods. It usually resolves on its own.
Chronic pancreatitis does not resolve itself;
it slowly leads to the destruction of the
pancreas.
The pancreas, a gland located behind the
stomach, releases hormones, insulin and
glucagon, and digestive substances for the
d i g e s t i o n o f f a t s , p r o t e i n s , a n d
carbohydrates. Normally, digestive enzymes
do not become active until they reach the
small intestine, where they digest food. But,
if these enzymes become active inside the
pancreas, they start "digesting" the pancreas
PANCREATITIS AND HOMEOPATHY
Diet Matters
• Drink plenty of fluids in the form of soup
and juice; increase your daily water intake.
• Don’t try to eat large meals. Rather, go
for small, frequent meals.
• Avoid concentrated sweets, deserts, and
spicy food.
• Eliminate all suspected food allergens,
including milk, cheese, eggs, and icec
r e a m , w h e a t [ g l u t e n ] , c o r n ,
preservatives, and chemical food
additives.
• Eat foods high in B-vitamins and iron,
such as whole grains, dark [leafy] green
vegetables, and mushrooms.
• Eat anti-oxidant foods: blueberries,
cherries, and tomatoes, and vegetables
[such as squash and bell pepper].
• Avoid refined foods; eat fewer red meats
and more lean meats, cold-water fish, tofu
[soy, if you’ve no allergy], or beans .
• Use healthy oils for cooking, such as
olive, or vegetable, oil; reduce significantly
or eliminate trans-fatty acids. Include
probiotics, like yoghurt; avoid coffee,
alcohol, tobacco, and other stimulants.
itself! Pancreatitis occurs more often in men
than women; it is common between age 35
and 60 years.
Cause & Effect
Excessive alcohol is cited as the most
common cause. Other causes include gall
stones, viral infections, mumps,
hypertriglyceridaemia, injury to the
abdomen or elsewhere in the body, vasculitis
[inflammation of blood vessels],
autoimmune pancreatitis, and certain drugs,
like diuretics. Type-2 diabetics are said to
have a 2.8-fold higher risk for pancreatitis
compared to non-diabetic individuals.
People with diabetes should promptly seek
medical attention, if they experience
unexplained, or severe, abdominal pain with
or without nausea and vomiting.
Severe, recurring or persistent, upper
abdominal pain, radiating to the back, is one
of the cardinal signs of pancreatitis. Other
prominent symptoms include nausea,
vomiting, weight loss, and fatty stools.
Pancreatitis is clinically diagnosed by its
characteristic abdominal pain, elevated
levels of serum amlyase and lipase, and
findings on CT scan. When neglected, both
forms of the disease can cause serious
complications like shock, internal bleeding,
development of pseudocysts, including
respiratory and renal complications.
Conventional medicine usually treats
pancreatitis, either through oral
medications, or surgery. Surgery is usually
performed when the pain persists, in spite of
dietary changes and medical treatment.
WHITE PATCHES AND HOMEOPATHY
A Blemish Calmed
ver imagined a skin condition being
Erepulsive, or cosmetically demeaning?
Just mention the name of the disorder, white
patches. It will make you go weak in the
knees. This skin dilemma is more than a
social stigma. It can trouble one’s life, in
addition to low-confidence, insecurity,
depression, withdrawal, or mental trauma
from which the affected person feels s/he can
never ever recover from, aside from suicidal
tendencies.
Ms Pooja had extensive white patches ever
since the time she could recall.
Conventional medications gave temporary
relief. In due course, the patches reappeared
with a vengeance. This made her the
reserved type; she started avoiding people
too. With just a few doses of Pulsatilla 200C,
based on her physical and mind symptoms,
the white patches stopped spreading. With
continued treatment and dietary changes, as
advised by our in-house dietician, her patchy
skin improved considerably.
Homeopathic medicines, started at the right
time, help control the spread of white
patches. They also facilitate repigmentation.
Homeopathy helps control underlying
hormonal imbalances, if any; it also helps the
body cope better at all levels without sideeffects.
Homeopathy also reduces the
chances of recurrence of disease.
Chronic Skin Disease
White patches [vitiligo] is a chronic skin
disorder. It causes depigmentation in patches
of skin. It occurs when melanocytes, the cells
responsible for skin pigmentation, die or are
unable to function. The exact cause is not
known. Some experts suggest that vitiligo is
caused by a combination of autoimmune, or
genetic, and environmental factors.
Psychological stress may also result in certain
individuals becoming more susceptible to
vitiligo. In addition, the disorder is usually
associated with low haemoglobin levels,
diabetes and thyroid disorders. Less than one
per cent of the world's population suffers
from vitiligo. Yet, its impact is stunning and
demoralising.
This disease usually starts with a small white
spot; it spreads to different parts of the body,
slowly. The patches can enlarge and change
shape; they often occur on face, hands, wrists
and body orifices. Some patches have
hyperpigmentation around the edges.
Vitiligo is often diagnosed in a clinical
setting. It is not dangerous in any way; it
causes no harm, yet it is disagreeable owing
cosmetic factors, or reasons. It tends to often
offend both the victim and the onlooker.
8 I MARCH 2010

WHITE PATCHES AND HOMEOPATHY
Conventional medicine has no cure, though
there are a number of treatments available.
These treatments, at best, slow down, or
improve the condition. The use of
corticosteroids and immunomodulator
creams and ultra-violet light are the most
common forms of treatment. They all offer
temporary relief; long-term usage is,
however, not free of side-effects.
Diet & Lifestyle
Certain dietary and lifestyle modifications
when followed may help control the “patchy’
spread.
•Avoid going out in the Sun between 10.00
am and 4.00 pm; use a sunscreen lotion [SPF
15 or 30] which guards against sunburn and
long-term skin damage.
•Avoid any kind of trauma, or friction, as
this can “trigger” white patches. Wear cotton
garments; full-sleeve cotton shirts and
trousers.
•Use a mild, preferably glycerine-based,
soap for bathing.
•Avoid direct contact with deodorants and
perfumes.
•Include green leafy vegetables like spinach,
kale, oats, cereals, blueberries, pulses, milk,
and egg in your diet.
•A study published in The Indian Journal Of
Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy [170;
Volume 36] states that copper levels appear
to be low in patients with vitiligo. So, include
a daily intake of one tablespoon of sesame
seeds in your diet.
•Daily supplementation of folic acid 10 mg,
along with vitamin B-12, 2,000 mcg, is
recommended.
•Practice stress-relieving exercises like yoga
and meditation.
Fact-File
White patches [vitiligo] is a condition in
which your skin loses melanin, the pigment
that provides the colour of your skin, hair
and eyes. If the cells that produce melanin
die, or no longer form melanin, white
patches of irregular shapes appear on your
skin, slowly.
This socially complex skin disorder usually
starts as small areas of pigment loss. It
spreads and becomes larger with time. When
changes occur, it results in stress and also
reservations about appearance.
