Can only get even better as it matures, with<br />

the only imponderable be<strong>in</strong>g which came first<br />

– the 13th fairway or the electricity pylon that<br />

obstructs the tee shot?<br />

NS The par 3s here are excellent.<br />

GW VERDICT: Modern, high-end parkland<br />

whose design makes the most of the site.<br />

81 Powfoot (▼ 1)<br />

Annan, Dumfries. Par 71, 6,275 yards.<br />

Designer: James Braid.<br />

IM A nice mixture of l<strong>in</strong>ks and parkland.<br />

JC Insufcient l<strong>in</strong>ks holes or it’d be higher.<br />

AM Have wanted to get back there ever s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

I played it. Interest<strong>in</strong>g and well laid out l<strong>in</strong>ks.<br />

IJ Has great character and a solid collection of<br />

holes that make for a very enjoyable round.<br />

GW VERDICT l<strong>in</strong>ks holes are superb and while<br />

<strong>in</strong>land holes are oK, they prevent a higher slot.<br />

80 St Andrews Eden (▼ 5)<br />

St Andrews, Fife. Par 70, 6,250 yards.<br />

AM Better than your expectations.<br />

PR The shorter of the famous st Andrews<br />

courses, however, still a lovely l<strong>in</strong>ks to play.<br />

IJ The supposed lesser course at st Andrews, it<br />

possesses a great set of green complexes that<br />

rival any of its three bigger sibl<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

GW VERDICT: Charm<strong>in</strong>g – and an essential<br />

experience when you’re <strong>in</strong> the town.<br />

79 Lanark ( ▲ 17 )<br />

Lanark, Lanarkshire. Par 72, 6,428 yards.<br />

Designer: Old Tom Morris.<br />

AM Quality heathland course <strong>in</strong> a lovely rural<br />

sett<strong>in</strong>g that has been <strong>in</strong> great condition when<br />

I’ve played it. some really good holes.<br />

NS A superb moorland course.<br />

DD should be higher from 2013. A hidden<br />

gem-elevated moorland with lovely holes.<br />

GW VERDICT: one of our highest climbers,<br />

this moorland was unanimously popular.<br />

78 The Glen ( ▲ 4 )<br />

North Berwick, East Lothian. Par 70, 6,275<br />

yards. Designers: Ben Sayers/James Braid.<br />

IM Has a series of unsurpassed views <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

Firth of Forth plus Bass Rock and its colony<br />

of gannets. The golf is hugely enjoyable.<br />

BS Fantastic holiday course, stunn<strong>in</strong>g views.<br />

IJ A pleasant course with stunn<strong>in</strong>g views and<br />

whose 13th is one of scotland’s great par 3s.<br />

GW VERDICT: Cliftop <strong>in</strong> nature, The Glen is<br />

more than worth a look when <strong>in</strong> East lothian.<br />

77 Stranraer ( ▲ 1 )<br />

Stranraer, Galloway. Par 70, 6,308 yards.<br />

Designer: James Braid.<br />

AM Braid’s last design and one of the best.<br />

Great scenery, lovely holes and a course<br />

I would jo<strong>in</strong> if it was nearer to my home.<br />

IJ Yet another gem of a course that has one of<br />

the greatest tee shots <strong>in</strong> scotland – the par-4<br />

5th hole, which has the wow factor!<br />

GW VERDICT: Braid went out on a high with<br />

this expert rout<strong>in</strong>g of easy-to-love stranraer.<br />

76 Edzell Old ( )<br />

Edzell, Angus. Par 71, 6,455 yards.<br />

Designer: Bob Simpson.<br />

BB Edzell is <strong>in</strong> a lovely sett<strong>in</strong>g, and is a<br />

straightforward but enjoyable parkland.<br />

AF super <strong>in</strong>land course set <strong>in</strong> a great<br />

landscape. Always <strong>in</strong> prist<strong>in</strong>e condition and<br />

with a bit more challenge would be higher.<br />

GW VERDICT lovely heathland-parkland<br />

location and rout<strong>in</strong>ely <strong>in</strong> good condition; ideal<br />

for a peaceful, stress-free round.<br />

75 Askernish (▼ 3)<br />

South Uist, Outer Hebrides. Par 72, 6,164<br />

yards. Designer: Old Tom Morris.<br />

DC: Historic course with old Tom connections.<br />

AS It’s got some fantastic holes. It’s golf <strong>in</strong> the<br />

raw, and tasted better with hickories! It’s the<br />

scottish equivalent to Royal North devon.<br />

BS liv<strong>in</strong>g proof the maligned method of ‘36<br />

stakes <strong>in</strong> the ground’ architecture has merit.<br />

<strong>Golf</strong> <strong>in</strong> a last bastion of wild tranquillity.<br />

GW VERDICT: Rough, rugged and real fun.<br />

74 Dalmahoy East ( ▲ 12 )<br />

Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, Lothian. Par 72, 7,475 yards.<br />

Designer: James Braid.<br />

AM somewhat lower profile than <strong>in</strong> past years<br />

but still excellent and deserv<strong>in</strong>g of a high spot.<br />

NS This is a terrific test. The climax is a serious<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation if you are protect<strong>in</strong>g a score.<br />

GW VERDICT: 1992 solheim Cup venue has<br />

been slightly re-designed to good efect and<br />

with a second 18 and a terrific on-site hotel is<br />

one of scotland’s f<strong>in</strong>est play-and-stay options.<br />
