Leven Links
The championship course at Leven has been used many times as one of
the local final qualifying courses when The Open Championship
was played at St Andrews between 1978 and 2005.
A true sea-side links, with the sea visible from almost every hole, Leven
Links is in part one of the oldest pieces of golfing ground in the world,
with golf traced back to 1846.
It is known that Tom Morris was involved in the extension to 18 holes,
which took place in 1868. The inaugural competition over 36 holes played
on Oct 2nd, 1868 was won by “Young Tom” Morris with a score of 170.
It retained its layout until 1909 when pressure of players forced a division
at the Mile Dyke. Lundin Links GC extending the eastern section and the
Leven clubs taking over the football ground north of the bowling green,
decanting the playing ladies to a new ladies course and renting further
ground north of the then railway line.
The strength of Leven Links is in its succession of ‘less easy’ holes and the
fact that one turns at the 13th into the prevailing west wind with a lot of
work still to be done. The 18th hole is reckoned to be one of the finest
finishing holes in golf.
Alterations have been made in early 2000 to counteract technology.
New strategically placed bunkers mean that golfers need to manage
their game.
finest links courses in
Scotland. CRAIGEWAN
LINKS FOUNDED 1841
Set in the breathtaking dunes of the North East of Scotland, Peterhead
is the 18th oldest golf club in the world and certainly one of the best.
Among the dunes and across the Craigewan links the course is a
classic example of Scottish seaside golf at it’s best - and the toughest!
Peterhead Golf Club was established in 1841. The current 18 hole
layout “Craigewan Links” began as a 9 hole course in 1892, designed
by Willie Park Jnr a dual winner of the Open Championship, and was
extended to 18 holes in 1908. A second 18 hole course was established
in 1923, however today it exists as a 9 hole course, appropriately
named the “New Course”.
Take the opportunity to come and play the course and enjoy the warm
and friendly atmosphere of the club.
