Everysummer has astory…
.. our story began in 2009. Summerfestival started as a one-day festival in
the center of Antwerp.
Over the years, a lot has changed. We grew, we built more stages, we
booked bigger names and welcomed many more happy visitors.
In 2013 Summerfestival became a two-day festival and we added the
already legendary pre-party on Friday. This year we’re happy to announce
that we’re moving to a bigger location in Antwerp called “Middenvijver”.
Summerfestival is the official summer kick-off. On Saturday July 4 and
Sunday July 5 the sun will be out, temperatures will be rising – it will be time
to party! Headlining the world’s n° 1 DJ Hardwell and proud to present some
new hostings this year: Oliver Heldens’ own stage Heldeep, Armada, the
famous nightclub Versuz, Antwerps finest Labyrinth Club, Heart United and
many more.
Summerfestival is the place where sunshine is combined with the best
beats, lots of fun and great entertainment. Eight fabulous stages will pamper
65 000 attendees with the best in all dance music.
Enjoy reading & see you at Summerfestival 2015!
Hardwell or Robbert van de Corput is a
sensation in the world of EDM. Barely 27, he is
adored by his many fans! The kickoff weekend
of his second world tour ‘UNITED WE ARE’ took
place in Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam earlier
this year. “The show was sold out within two
hours so an additional gig was organised the
Friday before. With two million followers on
Twitter and more than seven million Facebook
likes, Hardwell may shamelessly call himself
the most popular DJ in the world. Hardwell is
grounded like a house that he built with his
own hands from scratch. He was not a sudden
success, he worked hard. Getting more than
three hours of sleep a night is the exception
rather than the rule for this producer/
DJ from Breda. It is with great respect and
enthusiasm that we can say that this Number
One in the world is the absolute headliner of
Summerfestival 2015!
N°1 DJ
IN THE
WORLD
MAINSTAGE
SATURDAY
United We Are…
Robbert van de Corput had his first
piano lesson at the age of six and less
than ten years later he was touring the
Netherlands as a professional DJ. Barely
old enough to be allowed inside a club,
his CD compilations ‘Eclectic Beatz’ and
‘Bubbling Beats’ hit the shelves. In 2008 he
scored his first hit with ‘Never Knew Love’.
His international breakthrough followed
in 2009 with his ‘Show Me Love vs. Be’
bootleg, a classic by Robin S. with tracks
by Steve Angello and Laidback Luke.
Today he leaves Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike,
Armin van Buuren, Martin Garrix, Tiësto
and many others far behind him as he
was elected the best DJ in the world for
the second time by DJ Mag. Having just
started his second world tour, Hardwell
finds some time for an interview with the
first Summerfestival Magazine...
After a very successful world tour ‘I AM HARDWELL’,
you’re back on the road with a new show, ‘UNITED
WE ARE’. What can we expect?
First off, this world tour is bigger
and bolder than the last one. The most
important component is that the show
is built around my album. I want to
bring the feeling of the album to the
live stage and give my fans something
special, something unique. I’ll also be
touring the show in many new cities and
countries around the world, so expect a
list of exclusive tour dates to many new
destinations. It is going to be an incredible
journey and one that is heavily focused on
the fans. My vision for the album and the
show has always been to unite the fans,
myself and the music on the dance floor.
You’re just back from South Africa. You have played
almost everywhere in the world. What’s your
favourite city for a show? Is it still Breda?
Yes, I played at a festival in Breda and
it was just wild. There are many places
I love to play, but for different reasons.
Breda is very special to me because it’s
home. In fact, playing at any event in the
Netherlands is special for me. If I look
back to last year, to the final show of the
‘I AM HARDWELL’ world tour: being able
to play in New York at Madison Square
Garden… It was a sold out show and it
was just the most insane event of my life.
It’s difficult to pick just one city but that
particular show really was a life-changing
moment for me.
Breda
Hardwell plays at the biggest festivals
in the world, but if at all possible he
happily returns to his hometown of Breda.
He recently bought his first house in Breda
and loves the carnival there.
Your hometown, Breda, your friends and family are
very close to your heart. Carnival is one of your
favourite moments of the year.
Carnival is always good fun because
it’s a great time to share some happy
moments and good laughs with friends
and family. It’s nice to unwind and enjoy
a completely different party compared to
the world we live in. Plus, it’s great to be
home for a few days!
You’re on the road almost all the time. I can imagine
that it’s not an easy life. Do you have any secret
rituals that make you feel more at home?
Not really, I’m quite a simplistic person
when I travel. I like to travel light. My main
focus is always to make sure that I eat
well and look after myself. It can be tough
being away from home, but I love travelling
and I’ve always been comfortable living
out of a suitcase.
You travel a lot, you spend a lot of time on planes. Do
you have time to watch series? If so, what series
are you watching these days? What is your all
time favourite series?
I use my time on planes to catch up on
emails or work on ideas for tracks. I love
watching a good movie, but for TV series
I prefer Californication or Entourage, both
of which are really great. I’m just working
my way through the episodes. They’re
probably my two favourite TV series.
What are the 5 most played tracks on your phone
right now?
1. Hardwell feat.
Jonathan Mendelsohn – Echo
2. Blasterjaxx & DBSTF feat.
Ryder - Beautiful World
3. BYNON & Domeno feat. Alice Berg
Golden Hearts (Dannic Edit)
4. Mako, Paris & Simo - Not Alone
5. Julian Calor – Evolve
Sally and others…
Recently Hardwell released his new
video ‘Sally’ in collaboration with Harrison.
The track is definitely more rock’n’roll than
what we are used to from Hardwell:
That was our aim. We wanted to do
something different and I feel we achieved
that perfectly with ‘Sally’. I met Harrison in
Mallorca last summer, during a gig, and
realised very early on that we both share
a love for the rockier edges of music. So
we jumped into the studio and there we
came up with the track ‘Sally’. The track is
not actually about any one person; it’s a
metaphor.

This year you were nominated in nine different
categories in the IDMA. If you could only win one
of them, which one would it be?
Of course it is an honour to be
nominated in any category, so I’m truly
thankful to the fans for supporting me.
Like all those who are nominated, I’d love
to win all the categories. But if I really had
to pick one then it would be ‘Best Global
DJ’. I’ve been a DJ for most of my life. The
art of DJing is important but sadly it’s an
art that is becoming lost with all the big
tracks, etc. As a person who has spent
most of his life trying to perfect his craft
winning anything like this will always mean
so much because it’s a sign that what
you’re doing on the dance floor is working.
Winning ‘Best Producer’ and ‘Best Label’
are also very special to me as a studio
artist and an album label.
Revealed Recordings has been nominated for Best
Global Music Label. How does it feel to know
that your label (launched only five years ago)
is already one of the most successful labels in
existence? What are the new releases planned
for Revealed Recordings?
It is a huge honour to see the label
amongst the nominees this year. I’m really
proud of the work we’ve achieved with
Revealed over the years. Seeing it grow
to the level it has, with the artists we have
worked with, is simply amazing. We have
an amazing group of artists releasing
incredible music. That is the real strength
of the label. I’ve always wanted Revealed
to be a home where artists can come and
expand their music and their profile with
complete comfort. Looking forward, we
have great new music coming up from
artists like Dannic, Thomas Newson, Sick
Individuals, Kill the Buzz as well as this
fantastic artist album from Julian Calor.
Keep your eye out for a very big summer
full of incredible music!
You just reached two million followers on Twitter.
Congrats! How do you feel about it?
It feels very special to have such
incredible fans! Social media is an
amazing platform for communicating with
fans directly. I love the connection you can
have with them from sharing ideas, music,
videos and just general conversations
about everything and anything. I also love
how global it is. I can speak to fans from
Australia to Argentina, from anywhere in
the world, and that is amazing.
Third time at Summerfestival!
Hardwell is closing our Main Stage on
Saturday. We do not have to tell you that
he will rock the site. This is the third time
he will be playing at Summerfestival and
he loves it:
My best memory from performing at
Summerfestival is the energy of the crowd.
It’s a very special place to play because
the crowd is always so lively and up for the
music. One of the highlights of my diary is
returning to the event each year. I’m really
looking forward to it this time. My ‘I AM
HARDWELL’ show was a huge success.
It really allowed me to connect with the
crowd in a different way, so I’m excited to
be heading back for Summerfestival.
Summerfestival is fast approaching and that means Summercamp is back too! Do you want
to start your festival summer in style? Go find your tent, call your friends and spend four
unforgettable days at our campsite. Summercamp is much more than just a campsite. It is there
for you, day and night, to give you and your friends a moment of respite. Besides everything you
expect from a decent festival campsite, Summercamp also offers a lot of cool extras like a fresh
bakery, a shop and a ‘Beauty Parlour’. This year, Summercamp will be located within the festival
itself. On Friday, July 3 we will warm up with a groovy pre-party: the ideal start to two days of
Summerfestival!
NEW SITE, MORE COMFORT AND MAXIMUM FUN
Camping in trendy Antwerp
Summerfestival was founded in 2009
and went from a one-day festival to a
two-day experience. To meet the needs
of international visitors from France, the
Netherlands and Germany we decided to
expand Summerfestival with a campsite in
2013. Because Summerfestival is located
in Antwerp, international visitors like
combining it with some sightseeing in the
city.
In the beginning, Summerfestival was
organised on ‘Nieuw Zuid’ and campers
stayed on a site at Antwerp Expo that
accommodated 4,000 people. Interest
in Summercamp grew enormously that
first year so the organisers had to look
for a second campsite. The Konijnenwei
site offered space for 8,000 campers.
This enabled Summerfestival to provide
sleeping accommodation for 12,000
campers. Last year the two campsites
were still sufficient, but this year it will be a
bit different…
New date and new site
Summerfestival moves from the last
weekend of June to the first weekend
of July. This was a conscious choice
to give young people the chance to
finish their exams before fully enjoying
Summerfestival. Previous editions of
Summerfestival welcomed 60,000
dance fanatics. Because of this rapid
and international growth, and due to
building projects on ‘Nieuw Zuid’, a move
could not be delayed. On 4 and 5 July
2015 Summerfestival will be held on
the ‘Middenvijver’ site, located on the
Blancefloerlaan on Linkeroever (Antwerp).
This large, open space (within walking
distance of the city centre) is the perfect
location for Summerfestival. It contains
all the ingredients to turn this two-day
festival into an annual event. The unique
location and the large area of the site
‘Middenvijver’ means that Summercamp
can be located right next to the festival
this year. The campsite will offer more
space (for about 20,000 people) and the
festival will only be a two minute walk
away. Campers won’t have to miss a
second of their favourite festival and they
can always return to their tents quickly
and easily.
Facilities
Summercamp will make sure that
festivalgoers are very well looked after.
There will be sufficient sanitary facilities
and separate (boys and girls) showers
and sinks will be provided. In the morning
you can get some freshly baked bread
from the bakery and the grocery shop
will ensure that you can buy necessities.
For those who forget their camping
equipment at home, we will offer a
camping shop. Of course there will be
plenty of food and drink stalls at the
campsite. When you think of summer, you
also think of barbecues... There will be
various barbecue areas at the campsite.
For those who like to look their best at all
times, we will provide a ‘beauty parlour’:
a special place on the campsite where
you can go and have your hair done by
a professional hairdresser. Where hair
dryers, straighteners, curling irons and
hairgel will be available.
ROBIN
SCHULZ
German artist and DJ Robin Schulz experienced
a swift rise to stardom. The debut of his first
single, a remix of Dutch DJ Mr Probz’s ‘Waves’
was no doubt the catalyst that ignited the
movement, allowing him to soar in popularity
overnight. ‘Waves’ hit number one in six
European countries and received a nomination
for ‘Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical’ at
the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. His second
single, released 6 June 2014, was a remix of
the Lilly Wood & the Prick track ‘Prayer in
C’. Both remixes have led to international
recognition for Schulz. He released his debut
album ‘Prayer’ on September 16. He’s signed to
Warner Music and currently on tour around
the world. Yes, we are pretty sure…
Robin Schulz is here to stay!
HELDEEP
SUNDAY
13
Grammy Nomination
DJ and producer Robin Schulz is
having a pretty good 2015: nominated for
a Grammy and worldwide recognition.
Pretty awesome for an almost 28-year old
lad from Osnäbruck, Germany
Robin, you were in LA some time ago for your Grammy
Nomination. What was that like?
It was really exciting to be there and
see everything. I think the after-party was
the best (laughs)! Sadly, I didn’t bring the
Grammy home.
4x Platinum in The Netherlands for Prayer in C? What
does that mean for you? And how important is
recognition for an artist?
I am just speechless and of course
very proud! This is a great honor. It feels
great when you see the recognition. In the
end, you make music because you want
people to listen to it.
How do you stay up to date with the latest music and
trends?
I just breathe music, I also get a lot of
new music from friends, other Djs, labels,..
but I always try to do my own thing and
not to look so much beside me.
Osnäbruck is Robin’s hometown and
it’s his safe haven when he’s not touring.
If you could choose, where in the world would you
like to live and why?
I love my hometown Osnabrück in
Germany. There is no other place I would
rather live. Maybe I would go away for a
couple of months, but I would never move
for good.
You have been traveling the world and were just
in Tokyo …what cities and cultures have you
enjoyed most while being on the road?
There are so many countries, cities
I´ve seen so far, and I really enjoyed them
all. Tokyo was something special : a new
culture, a different lifestyle from what
we know in Germany. The USA was also
interesting to see : just crazy peoples
dancing and freaking out.. !
How important are your friends/family? Do they
always get to hear your songs first?
My family is everything to me, and of
course friendship is very important to me
as well. The first people to hear my new
music is my team.
What songs do you have on repeat on your phone?
I love Kygo, I really like his stuff! At the
moment I am listening to demos non stop,
which I made for my new album.
I heard you are a beer fan. In Belgium we are well
known for our beer. You like Belgian beer and
which one?
Not sure if I ever tried one . So I
will keep it in my mind and will ask for
Belgium beer next time. My favorite beer is
of course the one who sponsors the show
I am playing :)
Sunglasses
You see Robin Schulz behind the DJ
booth, fully concentrated on the music, the
distinctive lines of his face hidden behind
sunglasses. Robin Schulz is surrounded by
a somewhat mysterious aura…
You are addicted to your sunglasses. Do you sleep
with them?? - What’s the story about
your sunglasses ??
Hahaha... in the beginning it was more
of a fashion thing, but meanwhile it has
become like a trademark to me. There
was no startegy behind it, it just happened
(laughs) I just love wearing them.!
What is your strategy to cope with the lack of sleep?
I always sleep on the plane. That’s my
only chance to get some sleep. It’s really
tough catching up on sleep sometimes…
It is almost your birthday. If you get to choose, how
would you celebrate your birthday?
I’ll be in Amsterdam this year. I have a
show the day before, so am really looking
forward to it!
Final question Robin, which concert would you like
to see in the near future?
Die Antwoord! I really love their stuff…
VERSUZ
Today Versuz is renowned at home and abroad. The club opened its doors at a new location, in
the Grenslandhallen, in Hasselt in 2013. The concept is a real hit and every week thousands of
visitors go crazy to its beats. The music in Versuz is diverse, but always in step with current
trends. At Summerfestival Versuz plans to build a serious party...
A hosting you shouldn’t miss, both on Saturday and Sunday.
Solid reputation
On 6 November 2012 the final curtain
was drawn for the Hasselt club Versuz.
After more than ten years at the top of
Belgian nightlife, Versuz had to close its
doors. The city had other plans for the
Kanaalkom location so Versuz was forced
to look for a new site. Over the years,
the club built up a strong reputation
with a dedicated crowd from home and
abroad. Closing down was not an option.
Versuz found a new home in Hall 5 of the
Grenslandhallen. This new destination
was the start of a unique project. The club
wants to put itself back on the map and is
succeeding brilliantly...
New Dimension
On 12 December 2013 the new Versuz
opened its doors. It had to be a unique
party venue that spoke to everyone’s
imagination and that’s exactly what it
has become. At the club, elements of the
most renowned and innovative clubs in
the world are used for the sole purpose
of giving the discerning clubber the night
of his or her life. The club was equipped
with the best sound, light and video
equipment, the hippest bars and unique
decoration. The Versuz site boasts a
disco with three rooms, a restaurant, a
summer bar with pool, an indoor patio and
a separate party and concert hall, called
Area V. During the summer, the club can
be expanded with a real sandy beach and
a beach club, Ipanema. Each week more
than 3,000 clubbers have a ball in the
biggest club in Belgium and beyond.
Let’s play some music
Versuz offers a wide range of popular
(electronic) music styles, but a thought
is also spared for today’s trends. In the
Patron Room - on the 2nd floor - one
can enjoy a night of dubstep, R & B and
groove. Every week there are Clubnights,
with their own music and atmosphere.
Thursdays are called ‘Thursdays’: that’s
the day when students and young people
party. Admission is free and drinks are
served at reasonable prices. Saturdays
are called ‘Saturnight’ and resident DJs
like Peter Luts, DJ Roma, Tom Leclercq
& Sem Thomasson create the musical
atmosphere. On Monday there is
‘Monnights’. At regular intervals the weekly
programming is put aside to make room
for themed weekends, after-work parties
and famous DJs like Fedde Le Grand,
Kevin Saunderson, Dimitri Vegas and Like
Mike. Versuz forged partnerships with
Tomorrowland and Pacha Club in order to
bring this kind of talent to the club.
Versuz at Summerfestival
Both Saturday and Sunday Versuz’s
resident DJs will get behind the turntables.
You can also expect a series of national
and international artists. The kick-off
on Saturday will be by Thierry von der
Warth, resident on Thursday and the
perfect DJ to get the party going. Versuz
then continues with Lost Stories, a duo
from India. To let loose it offers the
unpretentious set of Laurent Wery. Funk D,
Daddy K, Lady S, Regi and Robbie Pardoel
will also join the line-up on Saturday.
Closing on Saturday will be Gregor Salto,
the Dutch DJ and producer known for
his house music with a tropical twist.
On Sunday DJ Roma, Peter Luts, Sem
Thomasson, Kenn Colt & Tom Leclercq
will join the line-up. Basto is the absolute
headliner on Sunday. Thomas Newson
will work with Marco V to deliver an
exclusive set. Many of you may not know
that Thomas Newson and Marco V are
father and son. Mc Shurakano & Sakso
will be your hosts on both days. Besides
all this DJ talent there will also be special
dancers and SFX. Definitely worth visiting
the area on both days!
BLASTERJAXX
13 TH PLACE IN
THE DJ MAG TOP 100
Blasterjaxx is perhaps one of the world’s most talented DJ duos. Not only nice to hear, but also
nice to look at. This Dutch duo, made up of Thom Jongkind and Idir Makhlaf, has been conquering
the EDM scene since 2010. They have notched up many musical successes. Blasterjaxx spent the
last two years releasing huge hits and playing at the biggest festivals in the world. With the
support of David Guetta, Hardwell, Afrojack, Tiesto, Nicky Romero and so many others, these
friends are looking forward to continuing their success in the same vein. On Sunday, Blasterjaxx
will undoubtedly drop some surprise bombs on the Summerfestival grounds...
17
Let’s jump…
With a jump of no less than 58 places
in the DJ Mag Top 100 and their latest
track ‘No Place like Home feat. Rosette’
they have certainly hit a ‘home run’. Did
you know that Blasterjaxx started under
the name ‘Macosta’?
It was Thom who started the Blasterjaxx
project under the name Scalix. Idir’s name
back then was Macosta. We both had
a few releases on small record labels.
The big success came after two years of
Blasterjaxx.
You often work together with Revealed Recordings
& Spinnin’ Records. Your new track ‘No Place Like
Home’ is on Ultra Records. Tell us more about it.
We received Rosette’s vocals via
Ultra Records about two years ago. We
immediately loved them. We made a
bounce version of it, which we finished a
year ago, but we weren’t really satisfied
with the result. A few months ago we
stumbled upon the vocal again and
decided to rebuild the whole production
around it. It’s our typical Blasterjaxx style
with a little bit of the current future house
trend
You jumped 58 places (from 71 to 13) in the DJ Mag Top
100. Did you expect such a big jump?
No, we really didn’t expect this! We
secretly hoped for a little rise, but we
never dreamed for this much of a jump.
When we heard the news we couldn’t
believe it. We feel really thankful for this
opportunity and really love our fans and
friends.
Lucky coincidence and a stolen car
Thom and Idir started their DJ career
solo, but their real success only began
when they found each other. Thom
studied communications and Idir audio
technology before they were famous. They
describe their successful collaboration as
a happy accident. They obviously spend a
lot of time together, and even in their free
time they can be seen together:
Indeed, we actually live together and
we even went on holiday together. We
both have our own hobbies and friends,
but we see each other almost every day.
You guys travel a lot, you spend a lot of time on
planes. Do you have time to watch series? If so,
what series are you watching now? What is your
all time favourite series?
For now, Idir is stuck on Prison Break. I
just watch some movies or sleep (laughs).
Our favourite series of all time is Breaking
Bad. We were seriously into it for a while!
Thom, you are addicted to tattoos; you just finished
your sleeve. Are you up for more? If you could
only get one tattoo, what would it be and where?
We both have one of our arms inked
and I think there will be more in the future.
Only one tattoo is a very hard question...
to be honest. I can’t pick one. I love them
all!
Your car was stolen. Did you get it back?
YES! After a week we got a call from
the Dutch police saying that they thought
they had found it. It was in a big hall in
Amsterdam. It turned out to be our car
and the funny thing was that the thieves
left everything in there: our SD cards, our
papers, even our candy was still in the
car!
You were both born in the nineties. What was your
favourite track?
We have a lot of favourite nineties
tunes, but our absolute favourite is Lethal
Industry by Tiësto.
What are the five most played tracks on your phone
right now?
Thom:
1. The Eagles - Hotel California
2. ZHU - Cocaine Model
3. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Road Trippin
4. The Neighbourhood - Let It Go
5. Kraantje Pappie - Met z’n tweeën
Idir:
1. Nickelback - Photograph
2. Good Charlotte - Lifestyle of the rich
and the famous
3. Wisin & Yandel - Rakata
4. Collie buddz - mamacita
5. Daddy Yankee - El Mas Duro
Events can be found on all continents,
and the talented artists and producers
make the hearts of thousands of fans beat
faster each month. What started as a small
Armada Night in Mazzo in Amsterdam
and subsequent nights at the Ocean Diva,
has developed into a concept that also
promotes other genres from the spectrum.
You will find evenings that are filled with
artists from the Armada Deep label, with a
build-up to progressive and trance.
Armada at Summerfestival
Armada is a big fan of Summerfestival
and we are very proud of the stage we
are hosting in Antwerp this year. We are
honoured to be amongst the crème de la
crème of the international dance industry.
We are looking forward to sharing our
show with the visitors,” says Marije de
Konink of Armada Music.
Armada will be drumming up a list
of top DJs, including Andrew Rayel, on
Sunday. Born on 21 July 1992, his young
age never stopped him from taking
the lead in the next generation of EDM
producers. Developing strong musical
skills, he studied orchestral music and
kicked off his producing career at only
13 years of age. It didn’t take long for
You have a classical background. How do you use that
in your music?
Well, it helps me as it has given me
a good education in the world of music
and in my production process. Classical
music is all about harmony, melodies and
emotions. That’s what I always intend to
have in my tracks.
You are one of the top DJs in the world. How does it
feel?
It feels amazing to be honest; I’m truly
blessed to be able to do what I’m doing.
I’m always thankful for everyone’s support
of my music and my career. Without this
support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Tell us an amazing story about the life of a DJ on the
road.
It’s truly an incredible life, tiring but
worth every single moment that you are on
the plane or between airports or jetlagged
or lacking sleep. At the end of the day, it’s
totally worth it. You get to experience love
from your fans from around the world. That
is truly amazing. You also get to discover
the beauty and culture of each country
you visit.
What do you do just before performing?
I don’t have a ritual to be honest. I just
hangout in my dressing room with my
team, go over the music I intend to play
and, as my set time gets closer, I get more
and more excited to go on stage and have
an amazing time with my fans.
Who inspires you?
Several people inspired me, to be
honest. Armin Van Buuren, Hans Zimmer,
ATB and more immediately come to mind!
Which artist do you want to see at Summerfestival?
I don’t have a specific one to be
honest. I love enjoying the sets of all my
DJ friends and I will try to catch as much
as I can from everyone.
Are you looking forward to playing at
Summerfestival? What can we expect?
Of course! It’s my first time so I’m really
excited! What can you expect? Why spoil
the surprise now! Make sure you are at my
show and get ready to be amazed!
AUDIEN
SF
SF
21
Nathaniel Rathbun, aka Audien, has been on a
wonderful trip to ‘DJ stardom’ over the last
few years. Since his breakthrough hit ‘Rise and
Shine’ in 2009, the producer/DJ from Mystic,
Connecticut has put the world of progressive
house on its head. Great artists such as Bruno
Mars, Armin van Buuren and Michael Jackson
have already been given Audien’s magic touch.
His unbridled passion has led him to the most
fantastic venues in the world. He moves the
audience time and time again, literally and
figuratively.
Grammy Nomination
2015 could not have started out
better for Audien. He was nominated
for a Grammy with his remix ‘Pompeii’
by Bastille. Although Tiësto received the
Grammy, it was a great experience for the
23-year-old producer/DJ: “It felt amazing.
I’m really proud of the work I did on that
remix. I am overwhelmed at how far it took
me. The original by Bastille is great and I
was happy to bring it to a new audience.
Being at the Grammy’s was surreal... I’m
not sure how many people can say they
watched Paul McCartney perform with
Kanye and Rihanna. What a moment.”
Who inspires you to create such amazing tracks?
I draw inspiration from artists across
various genres. One day I could be
excited about classic rock like The Eagles,
and another I might draw inspiration from
Hip Hop like Nas.
What do you think is more important,
the production or the DJing?
Production is my first love, and my
ability to produce records has provided
me with the ability to make a living DJing
and sharing my music in a live setting.
Last year you were a new entry in the DJ Mag Top 100.
How did it feel when you accomplished this?
These lists are a funny thing, but I will
say I was proud to be on a list that was
voted for by fans. That’s ultimately who I
aim to please.
On the road
Last year Audien conquered the whole
world and performed in India and Mexico
for the first time. It looks like 2015 will also
be a year ‘on the road’.
Do you like to tour and did it affect you at such a
young age?
Absolutely. There is no rush quite like
hearing the lyrics and melodies to your
songs sung back to you by a thousand
people in a club. It is exhausting but I have
no right to complain… I get to make and
play music for a living, and see the world
in the process!
What is your best backstage memory?
This is a tough one because my
backstage routine is tamer and less
indulgent than some of my fellow artists. I
remember the first time I met the legends
– Armin, Tiësto, etc.
What is your favourite place to play and where
would you like to play in the future?
I love playing in New York – somehow
it always feels like home to me. I haven’t
played in Japan or China yet and I’d really
love to do that.
What music are you listening to at the moment?
Right now, since I’m working on new
music, I’m listening to a lot of my own
ideas and critiquing them in my head.
Any album plans right now?
Yes I signed to Astralwerks / Capitol at
the end of last year and an album is part
of the plan.
Amazing crowd
Audien is performing on the main
stage of Summerfestival this year. He says
he’s looking forward to it. Especially the
Belgian crowd, they are something else!
You’re back at Summerfestival, but on the main stage
this year… Are you nervous?
I’ve played lots of main stages before
at various locations around the world. Last
year I played Future Heroes stage and the
crowd was amazing. So, I’d describe it as
excitement more than nerves.”
What does Belgium mean to you?
Belgium holds a special place in my
heart because my booking agent in
Europe is Belgian and many of my first
European festivals were in Belgium. I really
enjoy statues of peeing babies… only
kidding… and waffles!
For the 5th time already, national
radiostation MNM is looking for new, grand
and impressive DJ-talent in “Start To DJ”.
Last year’s winner, Sample, will open the
Summerfestival mainstage on Sunday July 5.
MNM-DJ Thibaut Renard is already excited for
this year’s winner.
HOW DOES IT WORK EXACTLY ? HOW DO YOU DISCOVER
THOSE NEW GEMSTONES?
Each year we see an increase in
people signing up. The contest grows in
popularity and there’s always the “ wordof-mouth”
effect .
Unfortunately the girls are a bit
underrepresented. So ladies: “Who run the
world ? Let me hear you!”
START TO DJ
From those hundreds applications,
the jury selects the best ones who will
participate in the radioshow on Friday
evening : live DJ-ing with Regi, Dimitri
Vegas or Summerfestival’s artist booker
watching your every move.. Scary stuff!
And that’s where the strong survive!
And then things go real fast. Week after
week, DJ’s are sent home until the best
one remains!
DOES IT MEAN MUCH TO WIN “START TO DJ”?
Of course it does! There are plenty of
DJ’s these days, so it’s hard to stand out.
Start To DJ gives you a lot of exposure
and that serious extra push a young artist
needs.
It’s also a big reference and a great
quality label. Former winners as Nobles,
DJ Snes or Freaquency (who played really
big festivals last year), still have agenda’s
full to the brim. Go check their Facebookaccounts
or websites and you’ll see what
I mean.
So if you have that bustling ambition
and you’re hungry for more: take a leap
and sign up for Start to DJ!
Keep an eye on mnm.be. Application
starts in the weeks before summer.

Armin van Buuren once called them the ‘rising
stars of trance’. That prediction has more
than come true. W & W, or Ward van der Harst
and Willem van Hanegem, have turned many
a club and festival on their head. The first
collaboration of this Dutch DJ and producer
duo led to an instant hit ‘Mustang’. Since
then their success has only increased. Last
year they scored hits with ‘Bigfoot’, ‘Lift Off’
and ‘Schocker’. 2015 will be no different. The
year has only just begun and W&W has two
new tracks ready: ‘Don’t Stop the Madness’
and ‘Love High High’. W&W, definitely a duo to
watch out for: Saturday on the main stage!
Congratulations on your new single ‘Don’t Stop
the Madness’. How was the collaboration with
Hardwell and Fatman Scoop? How did it all
begin?
We see Hardwell a lot when we’re on
tour. We always talk about music and
productions we are working on. At some
point we were like, okay we have to do
something together. We started working
and ‘Don’t Stop the Madness’ is the result!
How has your music evolved since the early days?
Our style used to be more focused on
trance. Nowadays we combine different
styles in our productions.
What makes a good song/track for W&W?
Originality! For sure! We always want to
come up with something new and exciting.
If a track sounds the same as every other
release, it just doesn’t cut it for us.
Is there any artist you really want to work with
and why?
We’re actually really content with
whom we’ve worked with so far, but we
think it would be really cool to work with
some of the young and upcoming artists!
Those guys have such innovative ideas. A
collaboration with one of them would be
really awesome!
Being on the road all the time isn’t always easy. How
important is a nice meal when you are on the
road? What kind of food from home do you guys
miss when touring?
A good meal can really make your
evening a lot better so we always try to
grab dinner before performing. The food
we miss the most is typical Dutch cheese.
There’s no place in the world where
you can get the same cheese as in the
Netherlands.
What is your favourite drink?
We’re not that picky when it comes to
drinks. Just give us a nice cold beer and
we’re more than happy!”
Brothers?!
Ward and William met for the first time
in 2007 at Trance Energy. Many people
think that they are brothers, but nothing is
farther from the truth.
Yeah, we hear that a lot! Maybe
because there are other successful DJ
duos who are in fact brothers, like DVBBS
and Showtek. Maybe it’s because both
our names start with a W? We’re not sure
really.
Tell us another funny story!
Haha, there are so many! One thing
that I always enjoy (Willem) is when Ward
gets grumpy when we’re on tour and I can
mess with him a little! Nothing better than
a little teasing every once in a while.
So when you are not teasing Ward, what does a
perfect night out look like for you guys?
Well, we don’t really like to go out and
get smashed anymore. We’d just hit a nice
bar or cafe and have some drinks with
friends and then later we’d go to a club
and check that out for a while. Nothing too
wild or fancy.
What does paradise look like for W&W?
We actually posted a picture on
Facebook recently of an island that’s
shaped in our logo. I guess a tropical
island with nice blue water, a cold beer
and a studio would be close to paradise
for us!
If you guys could meet a deceased artist, who would
it be and what would you ask him/her?
Wow, that is a really hard question! Not
only who but also what would you ask?
Hmmm, maybe we should stick to living
people so we can ask them to work with
us, haha!
New music at Summerfestival!
W&W is playing at Summerfestival for
the first time this year. They are clearly
looking forward to it. Their set is packed
with new tracks, which they are only too
happy to share with the crowd.
Indeed, you can expect a set full of
high energy and big drops! We have a
lot of new music we can’t wait to play. We
are definitely playing a few new tracks!
We think the crowd will love them and go
crazy.
Which performance do you guys definitely want to
see at Summerfestival?
Our man Hardwell is closing the festival
on Saturday. We definitely don’t want to
miss him playing our track ‘Don’t Stop the
Madness’!”
What does Belgium mean for W&W?
Awesome festivals! And Belgium is a
direct competitor in football!
If you guys could say one thing to your fans, what
would it be?
Don’t stop the madness guys! Let’s
go crazy together in 2015. And, of course,
thank you for all your support!”

House is where the heart is
Producing his own tracks was a
natural step in spreading quality house
vibes all around the world. His work has
been played and approved around the
world, resulting in remixes of the likes
of Bob Sinclar, Funkerman, Beyoncé
and many more. He is now signed to
Belgium’s biggest dance label N.E.W.S &
it’s all about getting that funk and soul
back where they belong: into the heart of
Your latest song ‘Around Town’, how would you
describe it? Why should people listen to it?
I think the song is best described as
a ‘future house’ song. At least, that’s what
everybody is calling it these days. For me,
it’s just house music with a good pair of
balls… (laughs) You know? Just a lot of
energy and a big drop but still a track with
feeling. That’s why they should listen to it.
It’s the follow-up track of my biggest hit up
to now: ‘People’ which has been played
by Tiësto, Funkerman, Yves V, Riva Star,
Gramophonedzie and many more come
along. “Come Along” is also the name of
the Summerfestival anthem and it will be
released on Monday May 25th on N.E.W.S
records worldwide.The reactions from
some countries and artists are already far
above my expectations so I am a happy
man.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere, sometimes a sample from
my vinyl collection, a gig, a walk on the
beach…. Most of my tracks are made by
working long hours in my home studio.
Pushing the limits until that magical
moment, when you have a smile on your
face as you listen to what you’ve made.
Belgium-based but beaming the love of house all over the world with a blend of funky rhythms,
groovy sax and smooth vocals: DJ Licious, knows good vibes come from nothing but house music.
After founding the celebrated clubbing concept SHOMI in Antwerp, his DJ career directed him
to the Belgian ‘Defected in the house’ parties, which proudly pushed house music to a national
level. Mixing fresh tunes in his own global radio show on Radio FG, spinning his favourite tracks
at clubs and festivals worldwide: DJ Licious does what he loves best. He lets the music do the
talking.
You have a good connection with Funkerman. How did
you guys meet and do you often go out together?
Or do something else?
Funkerman was one of the guys I
booked as a headliner at SHOMI. As my
reputation as a DJ/producer grew, I joined
the same DJ Agency as him, got signed to
his ‘Can you feel it’ label and we’ve been
friends ever since. We meet regularly in
the studio and share tracks, help each
other creatively. I can honestly say that he
is my mentor. He lifted me to a whole new
level production-wise.
27
How did Shomi come about?
When I started out as a DJ I was still in
school. A lot of clubs and people thought
I was too young so they didn’t give me a
chance. I started my own events called
‘SHOMI’ to give myself a chance to play
music in the legendary, but now closed,
club ‘Stereo Sushi’ in Antwerp. At first
we struggled, but after a year of really
pushing this monthly event, every edition
was sold out. Now we are hosting a stage
at Summerfestival! We throw parties in
the Netherlands and we are a resident
concept at the famous La Rocca Club.
Seventh heaven
You were asked by Summerfestival to produce
their anthem this year. That must be an amazing
feeling! The song is called “Come Along”. Where
did you get your inspiration?
When I was asked to do the
Summerfestival anthem I did my happy
dance in the studio, luckily nobody was
around to see it. Then I immediately
started to write down all the feelings I got
when I played at Summerfestival the past
few years. For me it’s all about happiness
and having fun with friends and the fans,
especially because Summerfestival is
so close to my real home. I wrote a very
uplifting tropical house song inviting
everybody to come along and join us this
year.
Where would you like to play in the future and why?
I already feel blessed with my
residency in La Rocca. I’ve been
playing Summerfestival, Laundry Day
and Tomorrowland for five years now. I
get to travel abroad and play in Ibiza,
Atlanta, Bordeaux, Budapest… There is
one club that I have yet to conquer and
that is ‘Pacha Ibiza’. The vibe there is
just indescribable; you must go there to
understand. That venue is pure magic.
Play in Ibiza or Antwerp?
Pffff…. That’s a tough one seeing as a
lot of my friends live in Antwerp (laughs).
I’ll just rent a plane and take all my
Antwerp friends to Ibiza to have a party
there, now that would be perfect.
Tell us a great ‘DJ Licious’ story!
Hahahaa, I’ve got loads of those! The
most special one would be about the
Radio FG techno parade. I was playing
on a truck in the centre of Paris for the
famous French Radio together with
Michael Calfan. All of a sudden, Dimitri
Vegas & Like Mike dropped by and
played a few records. While the truck
was driving, everybody -- and I mean like
100,000 people -- were jumping on cars,
buses and telephone stands… anything
they could get their hands on. Some
even climbed on street lights. It was total
mayhem and everything I played took
them higher. I was in seventh heaven that
day.
What does DJ Licious do before performing?
Some may find it weird, but most of the
time I just play a videogame to relax and
clear my head before I go on. Then I drink
a whiskey and it’s show time. Never fails!
What songs are you listening to at the moment?
I listen to all kinds of music, from the
classics like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix
to the latest work of Maceo Plex, Kölsch,
Tove Lo,… Everything that has a little soul
or funk in it is good for me.
What would be a perfect night out for you?
First enjoying the sun on the beach
or next to a swimming pool, then having
a nice dinner or BBQ with friends and
finishing the night in a club playing for a
massive crowd. That would be my perfect
night out.
Shomi hosting during Summerfestival
What can we expect?
Only the best in house music spiced
up with live instruments like sax and
drums. During our events we try to share
a feeling of ‘house & happiness’ with our
crowd. We call it ‘shomi love’. I will provide
a lot of exclusive new DJ Licious tracks
and bootlegs and will work out something
special with my good friend ‘Sakso’.
What is it like to play at a festival like
Summerfestival?
It’s the best. Summerfestival is one of
those rare festivals where the promoters
thought of everything. The backstage is
perfect, the crowd is always happy and
they give you a lot of energy. The stages
are breathtaking and very original. I am
always honoured to come back and
be part of this perfect way to start your
summer.
For you, playing at Summerfestival must be like a
‘home game’. Do you like playing for friends and
family in your home town?
Yes, it always gives you wings to see
a lot of familiar faces in front of you.
Since they have been with me from the
beginning, we share those memories
together.
LET THE MUSIC
DO THE TALKING
What should foreigners visit in Antwerp after
Summerfestival? Any tips for dining or going
out?
Antwerp is a city filled with people who
love the good life, so you cannot go wrong
in our town. If I had to pick a favourite
restaurant, I would highly recommend
Cielo, The Jane or Umami.
If you could say one thing to the Summerfestival
audience, what would it be?
They are just perfect and they give
back a lot of love. I am playing in my
home town and it is always extra special
to play for such a warm crowd.
To round things off, any plans for the future?
I think my answer would fill the rest
of your magazine (laughs). But I’ll keep it
short. I am full of dreams and plans, like
everyone else. First up: a few remixes for
very big artists. Also, lots of new, original
releases coming out on N.E.W.S, which is
my home label now, and a few tracks on
“Can you feel it” records. I am also getting
more and more gig requests from clubs
in Ibiza, Brazil, France, Hungary and the
Netherlands. These are all confirmed and
a lot more requests are coming in! So 2015
is going to be big - just the way I like it!
And I got you to thank for that!
NICKY
ROMERO
31
His career is on a fast track and not many
have travelled this road before him. Within
the space of a few years, Nicky Romero, aka
Nick Rotteveel, has grown into one of the
most prominent DJs in the world. Born on 6
January 1989, in the small city of Amerongen,
the Netherlands, Nicky showed a keen interest
in the drums at an early age. An early career
spinning house and R&B quickly evolved into
an unbridled passion for music production.
His early releases caught the attention of
some of the more established house music
labels like Spinnin’, Fly Eye, Toolroom and
Flamingo Recordings. Nicky worked on owning
his own exclusive sound—a seductive blend
of progressive house tinged with electro and
acid. In 2010 he released an unofficial bootleg
of David Guetta’s smash hit ‘When Love Takes
Over’. It was a move that shaped his entire
career. The track’s viral success piqued the
interest of Guetta himself, allowing Romero
to find his mentor and champion. The beginning
of it all….
MAINSTAGE
SUNDAY
Musical empire
Strike up a conversation about the
current state of electronic music and it
won’t be long before Nicky Romero gets
an emphatic mention. At the age of 26,
and in the space of only a few prolific
years, the Amsterdam-based superstar
has managed to build a remarkable
musical empire. Celebrated the world
over for countless chart-topping records
and his electrifying energy in front of
hundreds of thousands on the world’s
most distinguished stages, the loveable
Dutch performer, producer, Protocol
Recordings chief and global brand
ambassador has already carved an
international reputation for himself as one
of the most exciting and industrious artists
of his generation. Perpetually dedicated to
growing and maturing the Nicky Romero
brand at every turn, the Protocol don
continues to vindicate his position as one
of just a handful of the most influential
and venerated forces in the international
music arena today.
You just released ‘Let me feel’. Can you tell us a
little bit more about the song and video?
It all started with hours of studio
time with Ruben and Victor (Vicetone).
I love their style and we spent hours
messing about with melodies and chord
sequences until we settled on a sound
all three of us really liked. When we got
When We Are Wild involved to lay down
the beautiful and emotionally charged
lyrics, the track felt so right and complete!
We also realised quite early on that this
track was going to be pretty epic – so we
needed an appropriate video. I’ve worked
with Peter Huang (the director) before
so I knew that he would be able to work
his magic once again with ‘Let Me Feel’.
It’s just so great to see this project come
together and in such an amazing way. I’m
so pleased with the result!
You were recently making headlines for remixing
One Direction’s “18”.
Yeah that was fun (laughs). Humberto,
the host of RTL Late Night, asked me
to do a little remix of a track from One
Direction’s new album. I chose ‘18’ because
I really like the vocals.
You acted in a movie for the first time a few months
ago. What was that like?
Yes, hopefully you’ll be seeing me on
the big screen this year! Working with
Zac Efron and the crew was a great
experience.
Protocol
Nicky Romero is now using his
experience in his own burgeoning brand
called Protocol, which has quickly become
one of the industry’s leading independent
dance music platforms and a go-to
outlet for forward-thinking dance music.
Championing up-and-coming artists like
Don Diablo, Arno Cost, John Dahlback,
Vicetone, Kryder, Michael Calfan and
Merk & Kremont, Romero now extends his
own influence to help develop the next
generation of artists while continuing to
support more established acts.
You are pushing new talent like Volt & State. How
important is it for starting DJs to get support?
And why is it so important for you to be able to
do that?
I think it’s the responsibility of labels
like Protocol to focus on pushing new
talent like Volt & State. I’ve really made this
the aim of Protocol and I think the success
of DJs like Volt & State is a testament to
that.
THE LOVEABLE DUTCH
PERFORMER, PRODUCER,
PROTOCOL RECORDINGS
CHIEF AND GLOBAL
BRAND AMBASSADOR
You’re a long time producer, DJ and recently you
moved into label and artist management with
Protocol. How has that changed your perspective
on music?
I have a dedicated team to run
Protocol. Protocol Recordings has really
given me the chance to nurture and
develop new talent and artists that may
not have been able to get their sound out
there without our help… I hope our project
will continue for many many years to come
and leave a great legacy.
32
Can you tell us a little bit more about Protocol
Recordings’ label night?
We kicked off on March 28 at the
Mansion Nightclub in Miami. It was one of
the biggest parties Miami had ever seen.
Protocol definitely knows how to throw a
sick party!
Drumming
Before Nicky Romero was mesmerized
by his turntables, he expressed his
creativity on the drums. At one point he
wanted to try something new: DJing. But
that doesn’t mean he’s neglecting his
drums.
We saw you play the drums. Do you like to play any
other instruments?
It’s no secret that I was a little drummer
boy in a band when I was younger! I still
play my drums and piano as much as I
can, but now my instruments are primarily
my midi keyboard, laptop and Logic.
Do you play a lot of videogames? What is your all time
favourite?
Yeah! I’m really into my videogames. I
think my all-time favourites would have to
be Call of Duty, Modern Warfare and FIFA.
You travel a lot. Do you watch a lot of movies or
series on the plane?
Most of the time I try to work on tracks
or my upcoming set on the plane, but I do
watch movies from time to time. I really
enjoy watching House Of Cards.
Police officer
Nicky Romero has clearly stamped his
own mark on the current dance scene, but
as he says himself, he is not finished yet!
Music is his passion and addiction. We
have to wonder what Nicky Romero would
do if he was not a DJ...
I would be a cop! It would be so
exciting… But let’s be real, I am living my
dream and wouldn’t want to do anything
else.
Is it important for you to look good on stage?
To be very honest, I like to keep it
casual. I like to look my best for gigs, but I
don’t do it in a flashy way. I always dress in
clothes that are comfortable yet stylish.”
What do you miss the most from The Netherlands
when you are on the road? Do you take things
from home with you?
My family and friends! My family are
my rock and I miss them loads when I am
away. I take my Protocol family with me
wherever I go. They make it feel like home
and we have a blast no matter where we
are.
How important is social media for an artist?
I think social media has become
essential for an artist, not only to
broadcast their music to the world but
also to connect with fans. It has been key
in providing a platform for new artists,
to showcase their music for free without
having to rely on any outside investments.
For what we can wake you?
You can wake me up for my set
(laughs). But not before my alarm goes off.
I need my sleep…
Just 20 and already a superstar. During a
party at his high school he was introduced
to house music. The Dutch teenager from
Rotterdam was so inspired that he began
experimenting with music himself. In 2012,
he appeared on the radar of Spinnin’ Records
with a remix of ‘I Follow Rivers’ by Lykke Li.
From then on, it all happened fast for the
young DJ. His official breakthrough came in
2014 with ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’. The track came
in at No. 1 on both the UK Singles Chart and the
Dance Chart. ‘Gecko’ even earned a gold record
after more than 500,000 copies were sold. The
20 year old currently occupies number 34
of the famous DJ Mag Top 100, and with a new
single coming out Oliver Heldens seems to be
heading for a crazy year once again ...
MUSIC IS
MY PASSION
AND THAT’S
WHAT I
FOCUS ON!
Oliver’s career rocketed. He has
already played the biggest festivals in the
world. This year he will play in America,
Mexico, Great Britain, Germany... and of
course in Belgium.
You’re hosting your own stage Heldeep at
Summerfestival. How does it feel to be back, but
with your own concept this year? What can we
expect?
It feels so cool that I can showcase
my own ideas at the festival! I’m going to
invite the guys that I think are best fit for
this festival and Heldeep and we’re just
going to blow the roof off! It’s gonna be
one big party!
For those who know you, you’re known for your music
but also for your famous dance moves. Are you
going to show them on stage?
Yeah (laughs). I really like to dance so
who knows, I might give it a shot on stage!
You’re only 20 years old and you already have
several gold records. That’s quite impressive
and unique.
It’s really special because when I first
started I never imagined that it would
all happen so quickly but now that it’s
happening, it’s really amazing!
When you got your first gold record, who was the
first person you called?
I called my mom.
How did you celebrate?
I did the same dance that I sometimes
do when I’m on stage!
Where do you keep them?
They are at home! I have them near my
computer because I think it looks really
cool to see them and it motivates me
when I’m making new music.
Koala
After the vocal version of his hit single
‘Gecko’, Oliver released yet another beast
late in the summer of 2014 ... ‘Koala’ bears
Heldens signature sound from beginning
to end: oily, deep bass and an incredibly
sticky melody. After three days ‘Koala’ has
already made it into the Beatport Top 10.
When asked which pet he would like to
keep, we are not surprised that his answer
is a koala. Obviously, Oliver Heldens is not
one to sit idle. He recently released his
new track ‘Melody’.
You just released a new track ‘Melody’ on Spinnin’
Records. You have a special relationship with
them. Tell us more about it.
They were the ones that signed me a
couple of years back so they’ll always be
special to me. I wouldn’t be where I am
right now if it wasn’t for their trust in me.
You love music, you love to dance. Do you have any
other passions?
Music is my passion and that’s what
I focus on completely! But when I’m not
producing I really like to hang out with
my friends and family because I’m on the
road a lot and I don’t get to see them as
often as I would like.
You travel a lot, you spend a lot of time on planes. Do
you have time to watch series? If so, what series
are you watching now? What is your all time
favourite series?
I usually work on my music when I’m
travelling but I try to watch ‘Suits’, I really
like it but I’m a bit behind, so please don’t
spoil it for me!
What are the 5 most played tracks on your phone
right now?
1. Oliver Heldens - Melody
2. Alle Farben - Sometimes feat.
Graham Candy (Mr. Belt & Wezol Remix)
3. Zonderling - Telraam
4. Sander Kleinenberg ft. Audio Bullys
Wicked Things
5. Oliver Heldens & Zeds Dead
30 TH PLACE IN
THE DJ MAG TOP 100
Dannic, the highly prodigious DJ and producer
from Breda in the Netherlands – the hometown
of Tiesto and Hardwell – is one of the hottest
acts to emerge from the new generation of
Dutch artists making a breakthrough in recent
years. His phenomenal rise of 44 places to take
30th place in the 2014 DJ Mag Top 100 confirms
to tastemakers that he is set to remain a
driving force within the scene. Dannic has
managed to cast off previous associations and
step forward as a respected artist in his own
right. He repeatedly blows away fans with a
slew of sensational releases, collaborations
and, of course, titanic DJ shows. We look
forward to his set on Saturday!
Dannic groove
Daan Romers (in real life) won the
Dancetour DJ contest in 2009 and a slot
playing his productions to an audience
of 10,000 people. Having started out
as a DJ ten years ago, Dannic got his
stripes the old fashioned way: playing
bars and small clubs. It was only when
he wanted to set himself apart from
other DJs that he began experimenting
with production and creating mash-ups
to add something special and unique to
his sets. By 2010 this level of dedication
paid off. Dannic’s first solo track on
Revealed Recordings was called
‘Doster’. It received strong support from
Hardwell and Nicky Romero. Many
tracks later, his latest release ‘Golden
Hearts’ boasts that typical Dannic
groove once again.
Tell us a little bit more about your brand-new
edit ‘Golden Hearts’.
Golden Hearts is a track by Bynon &
Domeno. I made an exclusive edit; we
were so pleased with the results that
we decided to do an official release for
Revealed Recordings. It’s gone down
really well so far. Every time I play it, it
gets an amazing reception and a lot
of the major DJs in the scene have
supported it, which is cool. I just wanted
to make something that really does
the vocals justice while retaining the
signature Dannic groove. I try to keep
that groove in all my productions.
Today the dance music world is incredibly
difficult to break into. There is so much
competition. How would you advise aspiring
DJs/producers to make a name for themselves?
It is all about believing in what you
do and staying true to yourself. If you
feel that connection with music and the
need to express yourself, then you are
on the right track. So many people in the
scene jump on the latest bandwagon or
follow trends. I think it’s really important
to do what feels right to you.
You are very good friends with Hardwell and you
release a lot of music together on his label
Revealed.
Hardwell and I go way, way back.
We have been close friends for many
years now. We are both from the same
town, Breda, which is in the south of the
Netherlands. We met one night through
mutual friends. Hardwell really pushed
me to give up my day job and pursue
music full time. We have always been
really close ever since. He is a huge
influence on me creatively. I’m always
sharing ideas with him about making
music and new releases. It’s amazing to
have someone like that to share it all with.
We don’t often get to spend much free
time together when we are back home.
Our schedules keep us very busy. But we
tour together a lot which means we get to
hang out on the road, which is cool, and at
festivals. It’s like one big family where all
the artists know one another so it’s nice to
have that community feeling.
What was it like growing up in Breda? Did growing up
in Breda have a big influence on your music?
A lot of artists come from Breda. We
always hear the joke that there must be
something in the water in Breda! Guys like
Hardwell and Tiësto come from Breda, but
W&W and R3hab are from there too. It’s
crazy; lots of super creative guys!
Should you always focus on what a song sounds like
in a club? Is there a difference between playing
indoors and outdoors?
Whenever I’m composing, I try
to imagine the setting in which I am
listening to the music. That really makes
a difference. The environment where you
listen to the music has a huge impact on
the way you hear the track.
There is a difference between playing
indoors and outdoors. At huge festival
shows you are playing to many thousands
of people, so you need to cater to all of
them. This usually dictates the way you
play and the records you play. In a club
environment, it’s so intimate and you are
much closer to your fans. It gives you
more creative freedom; you can read the
audience and interact with them, which
is always enjoyable. I feel like I have a
license to experiment a lot more.
Any artists you really want to work with and why?
I have such a long list, it’s hard to pick
just a few. There are a lot of electronic
musicians I am into that I would love to
work with, but outside of that immediate
field, I’d love to work with Ariana Grande.
She’s the latest big name to have
exploded in R’n’B and she has a powerful
voice. It would be cool to get her to sing
on one of my tracks.
Something different now… What does paradise look
like for Dannic?
Difficult to say. I have been lucky
enough to travel around the world thanks
to music so I wouldn’t like to narrow it
down to just one place. That said, I had
some time off at the start of the year
and spent time skiing in Norway with my
girlfriend. It was so beautiful, tranquil and
peaceful… That’s the closest I have been
to paradise this year, so far at least!”
Big things during Summerfestival!
What’s it like to play the main stage at
Summerfestival?
I always have a great time - such a
cool festival and the fans always go for
it! We did a really cool show back in
2013 where Hardwell, Dyro and myself all
played back to back. It was awesome and
the energy coming off the crowd was at
an unprecedented level. This year I am
hoping for more of the same.
What can we expect from your set?
I have been working on a lot of new
music recently: new tracks, remixes and
edits along with some old favourites
of mine. There will be a host of festival
anthems coming out over the next few
months so picking up on what will be the
big hits for the season is always a really
exciting time for a DJ. Expect big things!
What does Belgium mean for Dannic?
Belgium’s impact on the electronic
music scene can’t be underestimated.
It’s much like Holland in that, in the grand
scheme of things. It’s quite small, but
its reach and impact on the industry is
huge. With events like Summerfestival and
Tomorrowland, not to mention the artists
that Belgium produces, it is without doubt
a major player on the international dance
scene.
Something you want to say to your fans?
Thank you for your constant support.
Thank you to the guys who have been
there from the very beginning and to
those who have just checked out my
music for the first time. It’s a real privilege
to be able to do what I do and it’s all
thanks to you. Claiming awards, such as
the No.30 spot in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll
this year, really reaffirms what I am doing.
I am so grateful that you guys are still
feeling it.
DE VLEUGELS VAN RED BULL.
DE RED BULL SUMMER EDITION.

FULL ON DRUM&BASS AND DUBSTEP
Red Bull Elektropedia saw the light in 2009 with a huge party in Vooruit. Since then Red Bull Elektropedia has not only been organising more
parties, it also organised an exhibition on nightlife photography, published two books - one on flyers and one on vinyl collectors - and made a
documentary series about legendary Belgian clubs, parties and DJs.
To top things off, the platform organises the much-discussed Red Bull Elektropedia Awards every year. This year they will be hosting a stage at
Summerfestival with a small army of fabulous DJs, including Syndaesia.
Belgium on top
Belgium has a very rich nightlife
history – from legendary labels like
R&S and Bonzai and influential clubs
like Boccaccio and Fuse to bands like
Front 242 and 2ManyDJs. But it does not
end there. Many Belgian labels, clubs,
festivals, DJs, producers and parties
cause international furore. Moreover,
Belgian party photographers and graphic
designers are travelling around the world.
This just shows that Belgium, a really
small country, is leaving a huge mark on
electronic music. On the one hand, Red
Bull Elektropedia wants to put Belgian
pioneers in the spotlight. On the other
hand, it supports the young wolves that
are making a difference today. Red Bull
Elektropedia Awards are the platform’s
best-known pillar, but throughout the year
Red Bull Elektropedia works closely with
clubs, parties, musicians and festivals.
Red Bull Elektropedia at Summerfestival
According to Red Bull Elektropedia,
there is no better way to start the summer
than with Summerfestival: beautiful
people, strong line-ups and chunky beats.
Last year, Red Bull Elektropedia had the
cosiest corner at the festival. This year
they are going for nothing less. In order to
distinguish themselves from other venues,
they opted for a small army of fab DJs.
One of them is Syndaesia. This Brussels
producer describes his music as a
futuristic blend of nervous beats, pumping
bass lines and screaming synths.
Syndaesia: “I have become famous as
an energetic dubstep producer, but lately
my music has gone in all directions. Once,
for a joke, I labelled my music ‘ravestep’,
a cross between dubstep and oldschool
rave music put in a new guise. Today
that joke has actually overtaken reality.
This summer I will launch a new single, a
collaboration with the talented UK singer
‘Koo’ who recently provided vocals for
Koan Sound and Original Sin. The album
sounds like a fresh cross-pollination
between dubstep and deep house music.
In addition, another brand-new Syndaesia
EP is on the horizon. It will sound like an
aggressive supersonic reconstruction of
the end of the world.”
Syndaesia is playing Summerfestival
for the fourth time this year. He is not
unhappy about it: “I live in Antwerp with
my girlfriend, and it always feels great to
be playing ‘at home’. The organisation of
the festival is top-notch, the crowd is great
and the Red Bull Elektropedia stage is my
absolute favourite stage. It’s the ideal way
‘to kick off the summer’ if you ask me.”
Syndaesia promises to bring a bold
and insanely wacky DJ set. According to
him, he ‘will play music which no one else
will be playing’. Syndaesia will be on the
Red Bull Elektropedia stage on Saturday
from 5.30 to 7pm. Beware!

ALVAR & MILLAS
Alvar & Millas or Thibault Hendrix and Robbert Cools: two young lads who are ready to conquer
the dance world. They met about four years ago at school in Lier (Antwerp). Their common
passion meant it wasn’t long before they became the DJ duo Alvar & Millas. After sending out
innumerable demos into the world, they were contracted by Oliver Heldens’ Spinnin’ Records
and they released ‘Onyva’. Last summer, the Antwerp DJ duo made a deal with the American
electro label Universal Records. This is the label they want to use to release as many records
as possible. Mid-March they launched their latest track ‘Back home’ under their own label Black
Planet Recordings. Alvar & Millas is definitely a name to remember. These two have only just
begun...
Beyonce and Britney Spears
Not long after their career got on track,
they were noticed by Beyoncé and asked
to make a remix of her killer hit ‘Blow’.
Shortly after that, Britney Spears’ A&R
management asked them to remix her ‘Tik
Tik Boom’ single. Besides making remixes
for big shots in the music arena, they also
had their first official release ‘Onyva’, in
collaboration with Oliver Heldens. Their
remix for Basto, ‘Electric Stars’, was
released on Powerhouse Records and hit
the charts immediately. Record labels got
to see how innovative and creative they
are. In no time Wooha! Records/N.E.W.S
brought out ‘Born 2 Be ft. Eva Blom’. Their
track ‘Challenger’ was released worldwide
on Ultra Records during summer 2014…
Today they have their own studio and their
own label: Black Planet Recordings!

You guys just built a new sound studio?
The studio is situated in the basement
of our house. We are building one
because music production is our full-time
job right now. We have a lot of equipment.
We use the Genelec 1034b main system
and Genelec nearfields with our Macbook
Pro. We use Apogee Symphony as our
audio interface and Crane Song Avocet as
our monitor controller. We also have the
Crane Song HEDD-192, an Acces Virus, a
Mininova and two units of the Dave Hill
Europa 1.
Can we expect new tracks in the near future?
We have a lot of new tracks waiting
for release. Our latest track ‘Back home’
was released on March 15 on our own
label Black Planet Recordings. Current
Miss Belgium, Annelies Törös is the main
character in our latest videoclip. Looking
ahead, we are working with Basto on
a cool summer track and with another
international name, but we can’t give you
any details yet…
When is an Alvar & Millas set a success?
We always try to create a big and
intense energy with the crowd. We call it a
success when everyone had fun.
Who are your biggest influences?
In the beginning we were influenced by
Swedish House Mafia. Step by step we’re
trying to develop our own sound.
What was the craziest thing you experienced in your
DJ career up to now?
The first time we played main stage at
Summerfestival and Laundry Day! This was
definitely the best experience of our lives!
We also enjoyed playing Summercamp
and Tomorrowland last year!
Where would you really like to play in the future?
Biggest dream?
Our dream is to close Summerfestival
or Laundry Day! Internationally we would
love to play Coachella, Creamfields or
Ultra Music Festival.
Playing in Belgium or abroad?
Both! All major festivals have confirmed
this year, so that’s great! We are also
going to play at a big festival in Norway in
April. Stay tuned!
Is there more female interest since you guys became
famous?
Not that we know of, but music is our
priority right now (laughs)!
Are you guys – like many DJs – hooked on videogames?
Yes, we really like FIFA or GTA! We
could play for hours! Next to our studio
there is a cool gaming room so we can
take a break from studio time once in a
while.
Playing at Summerfestival is like coming home
Alvar & Millas are constantly looking
online for new music. They have a real
nose for new talent, but they also enjoy a
night out with DJ friends and experiencing
the sets of their colleagues. This summer
the duo will be present at the big festivals
and, of course, at Summerfestival.
You guys are playing the main stage at
Summerfestival once again. Excited?
It feels like a dream to play main
stage at Summerfestival… It’s one of the
festivals we visited when we were young,
to check out the big names… To be part
of it now feels quite unreal. It’s really nice
to play a later slot this year, it will be
fully packed. We can’t wait!! The energy
of the Summerfestival crowd is always
so different from any other festival. The
atmosphere is insane! The audience can
expect a lot of new music that we’ve been
working on!
Will you be playing for a lot of family and friends at
Summerfestival?
It’s like coming home! Our friends and
family are watching us! Most of them will
be at Summerfestival, and some will watch
on TV or the internet. It’s an amazing
feeling knowing that your family and
friends are in the crowd, but it makes us a
little bit more nervous too…
Any other plans for 2015?
We’re starting our own record label,
playing big gigs and making music all the
time! Last year was insane so we can only
dream of an even better 2015!
PROJECT
It all started as a party that got slightly out
of hand, just like the film of the same name.
Was that a coincidence? Who knows. After
seven editions in Noxx Antwerp, Project X
went to Curacao to build a crazy summer party.
With its 10th birthday looming on the horizon,
Project X will be a force to be reckoned with
at Summerfestival. Don’t miss it!
Turnout much larger than expected
“I wanted to organise a cool party in
champagne bar Mirador for my birthday
on 21 March 2012. I named the concept
after the film, to give the party an original
theme. I invited the female DJ duo
2EMPRESS and DJ Nicolaz to play some
tracks. I soon realised that I had the same
problem as in the film: the turnout was
about ten times greater than expected.
When a friend, Yannick de Beuckelaer,
suggested we move to a larger venue and
really go for it, we moved the party to Noxx
Antwerp. At first I was reluctant, organising
a party for 200 people is a bit different
than organising one for 3,000 people. I
took the plunge and we just completed
our tenth edition in April. We always try to
be creative, so that partygoers who were
present at all ten editions of Project X will
still be surprised.”
Curacao
Project X recently travelled to Curacao,
a real tropical paradise. It’s the perfect
destination for a party, if you ask us!
“Indeed. That’s why there will be a second
edition this year, which will take place
in the same location. Project X Curacao
came to life after a silly proposal from
one of my best friends, Perry van de
Mosselaar, who lives on Curacao. He and
his family run Kokomo Beach. It really is a
small paradise: the sun-drenched beach is
located between two large rocks and you
can try your hand at diving, kayaking, etc.
Once a month this paradise is transformed
into a real festival, like Project X Curacao.
Our first edition was a real blast. More than
80 Belgian and Dutch partygoers travelled
with us to Curacao! It’s definitely worth
repeating!”, Dieter says enthusiastically.
Two women behind the turntables
It is unusual to see two women
standing at a DJ booth. 2EMPRESS does
it and they do it with a lot of bravado
and willpower. In addition to Project X,
Dieter also manages this female DJ
duo. “2EMPRESS is not a female DJ duo
like the others out there. Every day, the
ladies of 2EMPRESS keep contact with
their fans, give interviews, create music,
do photo shoots, etc. Last year they
played at the biggest festivals in Belgium:
Summerfestival and Tomorrowland. They
also travel around the world to show off
their skills”, says Dieter.
When we ask 2EMPRESS about their
set during Summerfestival last year,
they are very excited: “It was one of our
favourite moments last summer. For
years we were always in the front row
watching the main stage and last year
we were behind the decks on the Main
Stage at Summerfestival. What’s more,
it was sublime to be backstage sharing
our passion with great artists like Martin
Garrix, DVBBS and Blasterjaxx.”
2EMPRESS: female beauty during
Summerfestival on Sunday, July 5 from 6
to 7 pm. A must see!
Project X at Summerfestival
It is a great honour for Project X to
show off its concept to the revellers
at Summerfestival. We feature various
hosts and different music genres. As well
as 2EMPRESS, you will see Louis XIV,
Mastiff & Krisis, Audiophonic, Nexuz and
Thyaz. Dave Till, Makasi, Dux & Mr. Dum,
Freaquency and Lennert Wolfs will also
put the speakers to work. Project X is one
big family: the DJs and collaborators know
exactly what Project X is all about and
Sunday they will rock that stage. No doubt
about it!
After withdrawing from the music scene for a while, they are back. Looney Tunez, or rather LNY
TNZ, because they have become more mature, a bit tougher. The DJ duo Mitchell Vreeswijk and
Jan Stadhouders are working on an impressive comeback on the club scene with performances
at home and abroad. ‘Paranoia’ was released at the end of last year. It is a collaboration with
Ruthless and Jebroer, who provided the necessary chemistry. Their latest release ‘Fired Up’
immediately debuted at number one on the beatport hard dance chart. They don’t like being
categorised, ‘F*ck Genres’ is their slogan. LNY TNZ hits back harder than ever, and they will only
be too happy to show it during Summerfestival.
or the boundaries of the EDM genre.
Mitchell Vreeswijk and Jan Stadhouders
teamed up in their hometown, Vlaardingen
in the Netherlands, and formed LNY TNZ
in 2004. They share a passion for putting a
new twist on hard hitting EDM. The group
rapidly made a name for themselves, as
they released underground tracks that
evolved the genre into something entirely
in and of its own. They quickly became
pioneers in Dutch music as a DJ tandem
known for their unique sound. Support
from other leading artists came pouring
in as LNY TNZ tracks appeared on
numerous compilation CDs and received
radio play worldwide. After mixing their
second official compilation CD in 2007,
LNY TNZ toured at major festivals and
events around the globe, emerging as a
leader on the scene. Following a string of
tours, Mitchell and Jan took a break to
study, travel, and work on other art forms,
including film directing. They came up with
a new round of music in 2012. LNY TNZ
recorded several underground bootlegs
and released them online. They were
supported by their fans and major artists,
who welcomed the duo back from hiatus.
In 2013, LNY TNZ presented their single
‘Last Night Ever’ with Yellow Claw from
the forthcoming collaboration EP ‘All Your
Bass.’ The hit was released by Sony BMG
and Dim Mak, along with a popular video
that takes place during a full tilt night in
Tokyo. LNY TNZ are here to stay, currently
working on more major collaborations and
putting out new music that will continue
to push the boundaries of their unique
combination of hardstyle, trap and EDM.
At the end of last year, you guys released the single
‘Paranoia’. How was it received?
Initially we intended to release
‘Paranoia’ for free on SoundCloud.
However, we found it a bit too good and
we let lots of people listen to the track,
including Jebroer. Tim was immediately
won over by the sound and quickly went
to work on the lyrics. The drop of the
track made him think of ‘paranoid’, but in
a positive sense of the word: crazy about
the beat. We contacted Ruthless and we
shot a video to go with it.
49
How would you describe your latest song ‘Fired up’?
‘Fired up’ is totally different from
‘Paranoia’. It’s a real festival anthem that
is very easy to sing along to. The sound
makes you long for the weekend and the
festival season. It’s perfect for turning the
shack on its head during Summerfestival
(laughs).
What are the key ingredients for a good song?
Less is more, you know. You must have
a good melody and the combination
of music and lyrics should not be too
far-fetched. A familiar phrase in a track
is what does it. If the audience can sing
along to a track then it is much easier for
a that track to become a hit.
Why F*ck Genres?
We love all kinds of music and we
always try to incorporate various elements
from other genres of music into our sound.
Our intention is that our music is not only
used in the hardstyle scene, it should be
more accessible. Today a lot of genres
are similar and that makes it even more
fun. Our target audience has widened
because of our collaboration with artists
that have nothing to do with harder styles.
We also notice this in our SoundCloud
followers; they are not just into harder
styles, they like different sounds.
Is it difficult to attract a female audience with your
music style?
We really try to make female-friendly
music because it’s usually the women who
determine what’s good and what’s not. It
just works better if you have the ladies
behind you (laughs)!
If you guys could choose one artist to work with who
would it be and why?
Jan thinks it’s a real shame that
Michael Jackson and 2Pac are no longer
with us. No explanation needed. Mitchell
is a big fan of Pharell Williams. His music
is great and we are very attracted to it...
Nothing is impossible, who knows...
Good friends
Mitchell Vreeswijk and Jan Stadhouders
have been in music since 2004. Both
share a love of experimentation and rock
hard EDM. They do not like to be pinned
down and are especially good friends who
learn a lot from each other.
Is it difficult to DJ/write songs as a duo?
We have been working together for
about 12 years now and so far it’s always
been good. Eighteen months ago, we
started working on our music fulltime and
we made good arrangements from the
start. Our partnership only strengthens
LNY TNZ. Musically, we can rely on each
other. That makes the final product even
better. We’re always together in the studio
and from the outset each track is made
with the approval of both of us. Everything
is very natural because we are so well
attuned. During a set, or after a set, it’s just
more fun to be able to share everything
with someone. Even on the road, we are
always together and that makes it more
enjoyable. Of course there are days when
we hardly speak to each other, but that
is quite normal. As friends, we know that
silences are enormously appreciated too.
How do you relax?
At the end of January we got back
from our USA tour. Right after this Mitchell
flew to Barcelona and Jan flew to Zanzibar
to relax. But to be honest, after a week,
we both found ourselves wishing we were
back in the studio. For us, making music is
a form of relaxation. We are really blessed
to be able to turn our hobby into our
profession.
Do you guys like clubbing or do you prefer a cosy
evening in the bar?
Occasionally, we still go to clubs just
to enjoy the vibe. Personally, we do not
often go to the pub. Every once in a while
we’ll go along to gigs with fellow artists
like Yellow Claw and Ruthless. Seeing
what’s going on and what’s happening in
the scene. It’s not that we go wild on the
dance floor. To be honest, We’re not really
a party animals. We love to go out, eat
and have drinks with family and friends
whenever we are not on tour or have a
weekend off. Quality time!
Break
At the end of 2008, Jan and Mitchell
decided to withdraw from the scene. They
both did something completely different.
They got back together again five years
later.
During our break, Mitchell ran his own
catering business in Vlaardingen and
Jan focused on various studies. Jan lived
in New York for about six months and
directed various videos. We never lost
sight of the scene; we have a lot of friends
in music, so we are always up to date
about all the latest in the scene.
When was the turning point? When did you guys
decide to fully focus on music again?
There was no future in the music we
played in the past. The jumpstyle sound
that we produced changed completely
and became too commercial, even
childish. All the big festivals started to
associate jumpstyle with a commercial
sell out. As a consequence, many acts
were scrapped. We really did not like the
evolution of the new jumpstyle sound and
we had fewer bookings at the same. This
was the moment we decided to take a
break. Six years later, we went to Afrojack’s
anniversary party in Rotterdam. He told us
that for example EDM was really evolving
and that for example the USA was ready
for something new and something harder.
Afrojack convinced us to come back in
the game. We were both at a tipping point
and the timing was just right. We saw a
growth in the harder styles and noticed
that the sound was being accepted by
a wider audience. This was the crucial
element that made us go for it completely!
Mitchell sold his business and Jan closed
down his video production company so
we could both fully focus on music.
Why did you change your name into LNY TNZ?
When we started we were only 17.
Looney Tunez originated as a joke: and
stood for crazy music. Ten years later,
everything changed. We have become
more businesslike and mature. We chose
to keep the name “LNY TNZ” but to
change its look. The name looks tougher,
but it’s pronounced the same way: Looney
Tunez.”
FCK GNRS BY LNY TNZ during Summerfestival
FCK GNRS BY LNY TNZ is hosting at Summerfestival.
What can we expect?
We tried to choose acts that would
appeal to a lot of people. Boehmer will
represent a more urban and hiphop style.
Boaz van de Beatz will provide a powerful
trap set while Wiwek will blast his latest
‘Jungle Terror’ beats! This all promises to
be fantastic sets! We also plan some live
acts with Mr. Polska and Jebroer, known
for their hits ‘Ravotten’ and ‘Banaan’. To
turn it into a real party, we have asked
FeestDJRuud to stop by. Ruthless and
Darkraver will close the evening on a rock
hard note. Of course, we will also play a
set - we are really looking forward to that
and play some new unreleased music for
you guys. Playing at a festival is absolutely
fabulous. People are more exuberant and
they all look forward to being there. The
atmosphere at Summerfestival is totally
amazing and we can’t wait until summer
is here again. Nothing beats playing a set
with the sun beating down on your head!”
PARADISE
SATURDAYS
Paradise Saturdays is a feel-good nightlife concept that emphasises experience, for and by
its visitors. Playful themes, partnerships with well-known brands, strong resident DJs and
entertainment of all kinds provide fun of the highest order. For years, Paradise has been known
as a top destination for everyone who fancies a fun and original night out on a Saturday. Would
you also like a taste of this original club concept and savour the casual ‘Paradise atmosphere’?
Well it is all possible on Saturday night during Summerfestival!
Permanent fixture
The Paradise Saturdays concept
was born in 2008 at Café Local on the
Waalsekaai in Antwerp. It quickly grew
into a permanent fixture of the Antwerp
nightlife. Last year, Paradise Saturdays
celebrated its sixth birthday. Quite a feat
if you realise that this concept has been
going for six years without interruption in
the summer and without a name change.
It’s a weekly club night still going strong.
From Cafe Local to Carre
After the recent acquisition of Café
Local, Amazing Entertainment (in
collaboration with the group Huis Van
Wonterghem) decided to give the concept
a beautiful new home in Carré. In reality,
this is a new challenge for Paradise
Saturdays and an evolution to the national
scene. The move also provides a range
of new possibilities. The opening night
in Carré late January was a blast. Many
familiar faces and new guests made it a
night to remember. Paradise Saturdays
‘opened its doors to a new Paradise’! The
theme of the opening night ‘Heaven and
its Angels’ caused unprecedented scenes.
For those who want to experience the
evening (again) there is a funky aftermovie
on the website www.paradisesaturdays.be
Entertainment first
Paradise Saturdays wants to pamper
their fans every week. In other words,
‘Paradise People’ always come first.
The organisation considers it their
responsibility to provide revellers with a
perfect evening. Every week there are new
promotions, acts, gadgets, brands and
themes. Want to be part of all this? Hurry
to Carré ... or Summerfestival of course!
First time
Paradise made its appearance at
Summerfestival for the very first time last
year. It was an unforgettable experience
according to the instigators of Paradise.
Thanks to Paradise’s resident DJs,
additional artists, enthusiastic dancers
and fantastic fans, Summerfestival 2014
was one to remember.
Yago Wagemans, manager Amazing
Entertainment: “We deliberately waited
for a big festival like Summerfestival to
make our outdoor debut. The principle
is completely different from a club night
and we didn’t want to leave anything to
chance.
To us, Summerfestival is the symbolic
opening of the summer season. Everyone
is happy and for many young people,
the holidays have just begun. There’s a
great casual atmosphere and everyone
is welcome. We noticed last year that
many party animals from abroad graced
our tent. We also see many of our weekly
clubbers at Summerfestival.”
Paradise at Summerfestival
Due to last year’s success, Paradise
will use the same recipe this year. Lots of
atmosphere, entertainment, gifts and a
great stage experience will be the main
ingredients of the hosting. DJs will not
only play great music, they will provide full
entertainment on and off the stage. All of
this is fully in line with the weekly Paradise
at Carré. The residents Dimitri Wouters,
FRANK, Lester Williams and Shutterz will
undoubtedly deliver a fab party. They will
be backed-up by Paradise friends DJ
Wout, Jean, Jani$ and Michael Beltran.
Paradise would not be Paradise if there
were no special acts. In other words, come
join the party at the Paradise hosting
on Saturday. It’s a must. The concept
is celebrating its seventh birthday that
day and the party will continue in Carré
afterwards!
“Saturday, July 4th promises to be
a blast for Paradise. Our resident DJ
Dimitri Wouters will undoubtedly play a
large role in the proceedings. He has
been there since the very first edition of
Paradise Saturdays in 2008. He is Mister
Paradise! To us, he is one of the best
all-round DJs in Belgium. Dimitri Wouters
is 200% dedicated to his profession and
he remains sympathetic. We want to
invite everyone to come and listen to him,
and to party. Don’t forget... life’s a party”,
concludes Yago Wagemans.
Heart United is a community of people who
crave the harder genres of music. Everywhere
in the world you will find lovers of music
with a good beat. The Heart United platform
offers them a place to meet, to party together
at the Heart United hostings, and to share
experiences with each other. Heart United’s
Facebook page and website debuted in 2013,
but the ‘HEART’ has been alive in the hearts
of thousands of hard dance lovers for
many years. The Heart United stage during
Summerfestival is definitely one to look
forward to: the absolute world top of hard
dance will be there on Saturday and Sunday to
give it their all!
home of the harder styles 53
Absolute World Top
Heart United at Summerfestival will
undoubtedly be the highlight of the
festival. Not only because of the unique
atmosphere during the festival, but also
because several top DJs will be on the
stage and will be roaming the grounds.
“Indeed, the absolute world top will
be performing on the Heart United
stage. Angerfist will be defending
the colours of hardcore, while DJs
like Radical Redemption, Wildstylez
and Noisecontrollers will represent
the hardstyle and rawstyle during
Summerfestival. This is what makes
Summerfestival so unique: it brings
together so many nationalities who all
love different styles. People who come
to see a completely different genre also
get the chance to experience or discover
the Heart United style. The result: an
overwhelming atmosphere that proves
that harder styles still ensure an incredible
feeling of togetherness”, says Bjorn
Wendelen aka DJ Ghost.
Heart United at Summerfestival
This year Heart United has opted for a
blend of various harder styles. Oldschool,
tekstyle, freestyle, hardstyle, rawstyle and
hardcore will all be featured. Heart United
has chosen a nice gentle build-up that will
lead to a fantastic closing set and toplevel
hardcore.
World number one hardcore artist
Angerfist will close the Heart United stage
on Saturday with a bang. Without a doubt,
this will be the highlight of an international
tour and sold out shows. It’s a great
honour for Heart United to welcome this
artist at Summerfestival: “Raise your fist for
Angerfist!”
For those who love oldschool, there
is the Paul Elstak vs. DJ Ghost battle,
aka Holland vs. Belgium. Two hard dance
legends battle it out in a DJ clash. You
can expect to hear the classics, which will
make your ‘HEART’ beat even faster.
Audiofreq, who was responsible for the
production of ‘Reverze anthem’ last year,
has developed into a versatile hardstyle
artist who can blend the most beautiful
melodies with solid beats. With roots in
Australia and gigs all over the world, he is
a rollin’ stone worth watching.
The set of Noisecontrollers, from
the Netherlands, is supported by every
hardstyle DJ. The best productions and
euphoric atmosphere originate from this
fantastic producer. An absolute must-see
for hardstyle lovers.
Heart United managed to secure the
fastest climbing artist in the DJ Mag Top
100, Radical Redemption, for a top spot at
this edition of Summerfestival!
But Digital Punk, who is number 1 on
the iTunes charts, is no longer a stranger
since releasing his podcast ‘Unleashed’.
Be prepared for heavy shit!
D-Block & S-te-fan are permanent
guests and ambassadors of the harder
styles at Summerfestival. They will touch
the hearts of hardstyle lovers with their
melodic hardstyle for the third year
running.
It’s not all hardstyle and hardcore at
Summerfestival. The Belgian tekstyle will
be represented by the absolute Belgian
top. Davoodi, who delivers a perfect
crossover of tekstyle-freestyle and trap in
a dynamic set, will shake the foundations.
Teka B and G-Fresh are names that you
certainly don’t want to miss if you wanna
party... ‘Can I get a weeeee, hoooooo ...’
