Introduces the history of art chronologically,<br />
from the prehistoric period in Europe to the<br />
early Renaissance. Cultivates a meaningful<br />
recognition of different styles, concepts and<br />
concerns through an analysis of selected<br />
paintings, sculpture, architecture and other<br />
mediums. Emphasizes the thematic issues<br />
prevalent in various time periods and<br />
geographic/cultural areas. Examines<br />
interpretation, concepts, theories, and<br />
comparison of styles and techniques through<br />
readings, visual presentations, lecture and<br />
discussion.<br />

Ceramics IV 3<br />

Provides opportunity for students to do<br />
advanced individual projects in sculptural and<br />
functional ceramics. Assignments are geared<br />
for progressive development of the individual’s<br />

glaze formulation, firing techniques and studio<br />
operations are covered. Specific objectives are<br />
individualized and recorded in a contract<br />
signed by instructor and student. May be<br />

Introduces design concepts and fundamental<br />
skills through studio exercises. Explores design<br />
elements such as shape, value, texture, color,<br />
line, space and mass. Students generate<br />

and materials to gain visual sensitivity through<br />
practical experience.<br />

Jewelry: Metalsmithing I 3<br />

Introduces contemporary and traditional<br />
metalworking techniques and concepts,<br />
including the construction of small metal forms<br />
with a sculptural approach. The emphasis is on<br />
basic fabrication and manipulation methods.<br />
This class consists of group and individual<br />
demonstrations, discussions, and critiques.<br />
Slide lectures, visiting artists, reading and<br />
project assignments as well as discussions of<br />
current trends in the metals and craft fields will<br />
be covered. Demonstrations will include sheet<br />
metal fabrication, hammer forming, hydraulic<br />
die forming, soldering, riveting, repousse,<br />
etching, stone setting and patinations. Projects<br />
include the creation of jewelry, flatware, and<br />
other functional and non-functional objects<br />
using metals or other materials.<br />
