nigeriaCOM Market Overview
N
igeria is Africa’s largest telecoms
market, and represented 15% of
the continent’s subscriptions in
1Q13. The number of mobile
subscriptions in Nigeria grew 21% over
the year to March 2013 and though
voice currently remains the largest
usage, growth has been somewhat
faster in the mobile data market. Mobile
penetration stood at 70% in 1Q13.
The smartphone market is booming
because of consistent declines in device
prices and an increased collaboration
between handset manufacturers and
operators. The number of active
smartphone users grew by over 100%
year-on-year in 4Q12, to 6 million, with
all major operators involved in promoting
smartphone usage. This increase in
smartphone penetration has had an
impact on the number of active data users
(excluding messaging) which grew 57% in
2012, to more than 30 million. This trend
is also fuelled by increased data-price
competition. Data plans are more and
more segmented, with daily bundles
being available on all major networks.
Despite fast-declining prices,
smartphones will remain a small
proportion of the mobile devices used in
Nigeria, because the feature-phone
market is growing even faster than the
smartphone market. Feature phones are
becoming more popular because they
cost less than smartphones and because
many are now 3G-enabled and provide
a relatively good data experience for
low-end users. It is also forecast that
data revenues will grow faster than voice
revenues because of strong data takeup
and a drop in voice rates. However,
voice revenues are predicted to remain
dominant over the next five years.
In terms of the data services (excluding
messaging), Internet access is the
dominant segment. Mobile financial
services (MFS) usage is taking off.
According to the Central Bank of
Nigeria, mobile banking transactions
worth about NGN4 billion (US$25.2
million) were made in November 2012,
compared with NGN20 million a month
towards the beginning of the year. The
market is expected to boom in 2013,
since all major operators started
advertising services in 4Q12 whereas
before this time, advertising MFS was
handled by financial institutions.
