2.5 HARDWARE IMPLEMENTATION.<br />
The following is a summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SMARTDOT module's hardware configuration and an<br />
overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hardware <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> operation. A working prototype <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SMARTDOT<br />
sensor module (based on this hardware configuration) has been used under real-world<br />
conditions (placed in a ball and rolled down <strong>the</strong> lane) <strong>for</strong> a total <strong>of</strong> about 500 frames (~50<br />
games).<br />
2.5.1 Hardware Configuration<br />
A summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> major hardware components and <strong>the</strong>ir respective features is given<br />
below. See Figure 2-3 <strong>for</strong> a block diagram <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prototype SMARTDOT module.<br />
Microprocessor - Phillips 87C752 [21]<br />
• Intel 8051-based core.<br />
• Crystal Frequency - 3.6864 MHz (3.26 µsec instruction cycle).<br />
• 64 bytes on-board RAM (including general purpose registers and stack space).<br />
• 2 Kbytes on-board program EPROM.<br />
• 8-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (130 µsec conversion time @ 3.6864 MHz).<br />
• 16-bit auto reload timer.<br />
• Additional fixed timer (300 Hz @ 3.6864 MHz).<br />
• Interrupts (timers, external, ADC).<br />
• Idle mode.<br />
Light Sensor - TAOS TSL251 Light-to-Voltage Converter [23]<br />
• Output: 60 mV/(µW/cm 2 ), 7.5 µsec rise/fall time.<br />
Memory - Microchip 24C04 Serial I 2 C EEPROM (4096 bits, 512 x 8) [20]<br />
