President’s Message
Dear Fellow CDA-OD Member,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your newly
elected CDA-OD President. I received both my B.S. and M.S. in
Nutrition from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). I also
completed my dietetic internship at CSULB. During my internship, I
was hired by UCI Medical Center, where I worked in the Digestive
Disease Clinic for three years. In 2008, I began teaching as a part-time
lecturer at CSULB one evening a week. In December 2009, I decided to
open my private practice in Long Beach, moonlighting in the evenings
and on weekends. During the past year, I have been working as a
consultant for various eating disorder facilities in LA and Orange
Counties in order to hone my skills with this challenging population.
Currently, I teach full-time for CSULB and dedicate about three to four
days a week to my private practice.
I have been affiliated with CDA-OD as a member, Nominating
Committee Chair, Treasurer and last year as your President-Elect. As
part of my service to you on the Board, I experienced firsthand what a
wonderfully rich organization we have in terms of diversity, depth of
experience and cultural background of members. As President-Elect, I
had the opportunity of coordinating the presenters and events that were
held throughout our previous year. Furthermore, I witnessed the
incredible network that we have available to us as members of CDA-OD.
The goals for this year are to improve our use of technology and go
green. We plan to reduce our paper usage and printing costs by sending
out all materials electronically. This will include providing links to
access seminar handouts instead of printing all the materials for each
meeting, online ballots and electronic member directories. We also have
a new and improved website which I encourage everyone to visit: http://
www.dietitian.org/d_orange/orange_index.html. In addition, we have
added a new board position, Communications Chair, to oversee the
management of all electronic communication and update the website.
As always, the board is working hard to provide you with exceptional
education programs, focusing on the current trends of our field. We will
also continue to have a strong focus on public policy this year. To
strengthen our efforts in this area, we have added a Public Policy
Co-Chair position to the board. Lastly, the board is working on
establishing itself in the community by participating in more local events
and each board member will be contributing to our new blog starting in
mid-September: http://orangedistrictcda.wordpress.com
With the challenging economic conditions, many of us are prudently
managing our expenditures. However, it is the continued dedication of
our members that allows us to continue to function as an organization.
Attention Members!
We are in need of Legislative Ambassadors to communicate with local legislators about the
importance of our profession.
A Legislative Ambassador is someone who will:
-Establish a line of communication with the legislator as a constituent and an RD
-Visit 3-4 times per year in home or Sacramento office
If this sounds scary, don't worry! We are here to help and support you! This will only
strengthen our profession. CDA/OD will also pay your registration fee for CDA’s Public
Policy Education Day in 2012. If you are at all interested or have questions, please email
Janice Dada (jhdada@gmail.com) or Nicolle Bada (nicollebada@gmail.com), Public
Politics through Hospitality –
Hosting a Legislative “Meet and Greet”
Debbie Motley MPH, RD, CNSC and Julie Barrette MS, RD, CNSC
Does the thought of getting politically involved and promoting licensure make you want to
run the other way? Going to your legislator’s office as a professional ambassador may seem like
going to a foreign land. However, inviting the powers-that-be to your place of work can be an
effective way to gain their favor while being on your own turf and terms. The purpose of this
article is to show how two shy, yet hospitable registered dietitians hosted a site visit at Mission
Hospital.
Mission Hospital is a 345-bed, non-profit, non-academic, community, level II trauma center.
Over the past 15 years, the registered dietitians at Mission have gone back and forth developing
and implementing order writing privileges and medical nutrition therapy protocols in order to
provide timely care for their patients. Unfortunately, the ebb and tide of state laws have hampered
the RD’s ability to order such things as labs, tube feedings, nutritional supplements, to even order
snacks.
AB575 is California’s endeavor to empower the RD and to assure the public that individuals
providing nutrition advice have the appropriate education and experience. For more information
or to download the bill, go to www.leginfo.ca.gov. Licensure would also make it more feasible for
individual RDs, within the constraints of their hospital policies and bylaws, to apply for clinical
privileges at their facility and practice at a higher level. For Mission Hospital dietitians, this could
mean practicing to the full extent of their training.
While attending a CDA-Orange District member meeting, Debbie unwittingly volunteered to
be a legislative ambassador. Debbie emailed Senator Mimi Walters, a local Orange County legislator,
to discuss AB 575. She added, “On a personal note, we would like to invite you to visit Mission
Hospital, especially if this is a potential hospital that might take care of you and your family,
and to meet Mission’s registered dietitians”. Senator Walters agreed to come and Debbie set into
motion the following plan. (see Meet and Greet, p. 5)
Politics Through Hospitality
(continued from page 4)
The Meet and Greet: Debbie Motley, MPH, RD, CNSC; Martin L. Paine, District Director;
Leisha Bolland, District Representative; Julie Barrette, MS, RD, CNSC
Debbie immediately brought Julie on board for assistance. They contacted California’s Vice
President of Public Policy, Nancy Banda for advice. Debbie and Julie decided to give Senator
Walters a “walking tour” of Mission with key stakeholders (i.e. nurses, speech therapists, and physicians)
strategically placed around the hospital to emphasize the importance of the dietitian. We
planned a 1 hour site visit and chose topics of interest such as the role of the RD in nutrition support,
pressure ulcer prevention, and food safety as mandated by Title 22. We developed a schedule
places that the senator would tour with “scripts” or ideas as to what topic each stakeholder
could address. Our Clinical Nutrition Manager would help behind the scenes to alert floor units
that the senator was approaching. She also would notify our key stakeholders by pager so they
could be in position. We planned to close the meeting with a 5 minute wrap-up session by providing
written information on registered dietitians (available on ADA and CDA websites) and two
lunch boxes offered upon exit for the Senator and her guest. The day prior to our meeting we received
word that Senator Walters was unable to attend as she had a scheduling conflict, but was
happy to send two representatives in her place. Our legislative meeting proved to be a
great success!
Since our legislative “meet and greet”, AB575 was postponed due to opposition.
However, this should not deter you from hosting your own legislative meeting. Having a
legislator come to your place of work is a great way to educate, gain support and build
relationships not only with politicians, but also with your own hospital staff. If interested
in becoming a Legislative Ambassador for CDA-Orange District, please contact our
Public Policy Chair, Janice Dada. Remember, if dietetics is your profession, politics is
your business!
Interested in Mentoring a Future Dietitian?
CDA-OD is developing a professional mentoring program to help connect students
and new R.D.’s entering the profession with experienced dietitians in the field. We
need R.D.’s who have been practicing for 3+ years to sign up. The time commitment
involved with mentoring is completely up to you and your mentees. Mentoring is a
way to give back to our profession and share your professional experiences and wisdom with your
peers. If interested in becoming a mentor please contact: Kathleen Chevalier, CDA-OD
Professional Mentoring Representative at: kachevalier@gmail.com for more information.
As Dietetics Practitioners, it's always a good idea to look at our Code of
Ethics from time to time. To that end, we will print a small part of it in each
of our newsletters this year. We’ll start at the beginning...
2009 ADA/CDR Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics
as published in The Journal of The American Dietetic Association, August 2009
available in PDF at http://www.eatright.org/HealthProfessionals/content.aspx?id=6868
Fundamental Principles
1. The dietetics practitioner conducts himself/herself with honesty, integrity, and fairness.
2. The dietetics practitioner supports and promotes high standards of professional practice.
The dietetics practitioner accepts the obligation to protect clients, the public, and the profession by
upholding the Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics and by reporting perceived violations of the
Code through the processes established by ADA and its credentialing agency, CDR.
Responsibilities to the Public
3. The dietetics practitioner considers the health, safety, and welfare of the public at all times.
The dietetics practitioner will report inappropriate behavior or treatment of a client by another dietetics
practitioner or other professionals.
4. The dietetics practitioner complies with all laws and regulations applicable or related to the profession
or to the practitioner’s ethical obligations as described in this Code.
a. The dietetics practitioner must not be convicted of a crime under the laws of the United States, whether a
felony or a misdemeanor, an essential element of which is dishonesty.
b. The dietetics practitioner must not be disciplined by a state for conduct that would violate one or more of
these principles.
c. The dietetics practitioner must not commit an act of misfeasance or malfeasance that is directly related to
the practice of the profession as determined by a court of competent jurisdiction, a licensing board, or an
agency of a governmental body.
