Dear Members, Liebe Mitglieder 

We are at the beginning of a new year with spring and enjoyable weather 

right around the corner. It seems to me that this has been a short winter 

with little snow and many spring-like days. However, we may be in for a 

surprise. 

During our Annual Meeting this past January, we reviewed our accomplishments 

in 2011 and built a new team to do the business of the Society in 

2012. Several people have stepped forward to take on additional responsibility. 

Matt Stark and Jon Vanderpluym were named Co-Controllers replacing 

John Haas who relinquished his role after many years. Terry Ficken was 

elected a member of the Executive Committee, replacing Katherine Tullmann. 

Gaye Mc Mullen and Amanda Tate will be responsible for ticket sales, 

replacing Maria Thalheimer and Ursula Fox. Thanks to Maria and Ursula for 

the many years of contributing to the Society’s success. Lou Eder joined the 

Auditing Committee. After many years of preparing and serving food at our 

dances and festivals, our Fest Committee under the leadership of Annerose 

Klotz and Ray Vonderhaar has decided to retire. We appreciate their past 

service. Pete Heddell has accepted the leadership role for this important 

committee. He is building his team and is looking for volunteers. He needs 

our help to continue to serve the excellent food we are used to. 

At the Annual Meeting, our members approved proceeding 

with further expansion at the Donaupark. We 

will construct a free standing building on the west side 

of the pavilion to house restrooms, a meeting room, a 

small office, a mechanical room, and related storage. 

The work will be staged over 2-3 years. 

In 2014, our youth organization is planning a European 

cultural trip. Events will take place to raise funds

to defray the trip’s cost. Our youth group has not participated in a trip like 

this since 1989. 

On March 3, our youth organizations sponsored the annual Rosenball. The 

event was well-attended – 300 plus – thanks to all the parents and grandparents. 

The dance performances looked very professional. It was a pleasure 

to watch our kids enjoy themselves in the spirit of German Gemuetlichkeit. 

The leadership and dance instructors of the youth organization should be 

proud. 

Later this year, early in September, we will participate in the Annual Tag der 

Donauschwaben in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Financial support from the 

society will go toward bus travel. As we know, travel to Canada is more 

complicated than in past years because of security concerns. If you are interested 

in participating, you should begin to plan now and familiarize yourself 

with documentation required to cross the border into Canada. Given the 

significant cost for bus travel (distance plus increased fuel cost) we will need 

firm commitments with payment no later than the end of June. 

This year we are initiating a new one day event at the Donaupark. We are 

calling it the Sommerfest as scheduled on our calendar for June 23. The 

exact format of this festival is being determined. We are planning this festival 

to better utilize our Donaupark facilities. We have dedicated the financial 

gain from the event towards the European cultural trip. 

Don’t forget our immediate upcoming events of the Easter Egg Hunt on April 

7, Wurstmarkt on April 15, and the Maifest on May 15. 

Thanks for your continued commitment and I look forward to a culturally 

enriching 2012.

Our Trip to Hungary 

Do n a u s c h w äb i s c h e wi s s e n s l a u f 

we l t t r e f f e n 2011 

Vom 16. bis 28. Juni fand das zweite Weltreffen der 

donauschwaebischen Kulturgruppen in Harkany in 

Suedungarn statt. Mit einer achtkoepfigen ‘Delegation’ 

reisten wir aus St. Louis/USA an, um daran 

teilzunehmen. Dabei waren u. a. meine Frau Monika 

und unser juengster Sohn Reiner. Unser aeltester 

Sohn Christoph war uebern Sommer bei Oma und Opa 

Lorenz und Tante Monika in Bobingen. Am Abreisetag 

in den USA feierten Monika und ich noch unseren 20. 

Hochzeitstag. Am naechsten Tag bei der Ankunft in 

Budapest am 16. Juni hatte Reiner seinen 12. Geburtstag. 

Natuerlich bekam er als Geburtstagskind schon 

dort die volle Aufmerksamkeit von allen geschenkt. 

Am Flughafen trafen wir dann auch die restlichen teilnehmenden 

Gruppen aus den verschiedenen Staedten 

in den USA (Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit) und einige 

aus Kanada. Mit dem Bus ging es dann fuer circa 3 

Stunden durch eine wunderschoene Landschaft nach 

Harkany, einem Kurbadeort im Sueden Ungarns. Die 

weiten Sonnenblumenfelder bestimmten schon bald 

die Landschaft und luden uns nach Ungarn ein. Als 

Willkommensgruss von unseren Gastgebern im Hotel 

Platan in Harkany gab es gleich einen Schnaps und 

das sollte sich die ganzen 10 Tage so durchziehen. 

Das offizielle Programm fand in den Konferenzraeumen 

des Hotels statt. Das abendliche inoffizielle Programm 

oftmals in einem nahegelegenen Hotel Biergarten. 

Viele der Teilnehmer kannten wir schon aus unseren 

Treffen in den USA. Mit einigen ist Monika schon seit 

Jahren eng befreundet und kennt sie zum Teil schon 

aus ihrer Jugendzeit und den jaehrlichen Zusammentreffen 

der donauschwaebischen Jugendgruppen. 

Monika ist seit ueber zehn Jahren 2. Vorsitzende 

im Deutschen Kulturverein in St. Louis. Die meisten 

der Teilnehmer haben Grosseltern, die aus den 

donauschwaebischen Gebieten in Rumaenien und dem 

ehemaligen Jugoslawien stammen und welche nach 

dem Krieg nach Oesterreich gefluechtet und dann letztendlich 

in die USA oder Kanada ausgewandert sind.

Es verwundert dann nicht, dass man dann und wann 

auch mal ein paar Ausdruecke in donauschwaebischer 

Mundart mit dem Englischen verbunden hoert, so wie 

es die Grosseltern dort gerne sprechen und oft ungewollt 

verwechseln und die Sprachen durcheinander 

bringen. Wir nennen das dann liebevoll schwenglisch 

(schwowisch-englisch). Gewundert habe ich mich 

dann schon als sich vorne im Bus drei junge Frauen 

in feinstem schwowisch unterhielten so wie ich es 

besser nicht kann. Dabei waren es keine Einheimischen 

da sich ihre Zweitsprache von ein paar Reihen 

weiter hinten im Bus nicht ungarisch anhoerte. Auf der 

naechsten Raststaette stellten wir uns vor und erfuhren, 

dass die drei Damen aus Entre Rios in Brasilien 

gekommen sind. Wie sie uns spaeter dann erklaerten 

wurde Entre Rios von ca. 400 donauschwaebischen 

Familien nach dem Krieg gegruendet und es wird heute 

noch als Agrargenossenschaft selbststaendig gefuehrt. 

Das Brauchtum wird wie frueher gepflegt und selbst 

die juengsten Kinder im Kindergarten reden unter sich 

schwowisch . 

Monika und einige andere waren schon beim ersten 

Weltreffen 2007 dabei und hatten nur Gutes zu berichten 

und sind dieses Jahr gerne wiedergekommen. 

Waehrend beim ersten Welttreffen in Werischwar die 

Tanzlehre und Tanzchoreographie im Vordergrund 

stand war das diesjaehrige Programm umfangreicher 

und vielfaeltiger. Das Motto dabei war: Donauschwaben: 

Zukunft gestalten, Tradition bewahren, Weltweit 

zuhause. Das Programm sah dabei viel donauschwaebische 

Kultur und Unterricht in der donauschwaebischen 

Geschichte vor. Der Tag begann immer mit einem 

Gedicht vorgetragen von Anna Fernbach. Anna brachte 

uns (d.h. den Frauen) auch das Franzen knuepfen und 

Zoepfe flechten bei. 

Zum Programm gehoerte ein Besuch in einer alten Blaufaerberei 

wo der bereits ueber 90-jaehrige Blaufaerbermeister 

uns ueber das aussterbende Handwerk berichtete. 

Einen Tag verbrachten wir im Dorf Liptod beim


Schlachten, Wurst und gefuelltes Kraut machen und 

Strudel backen. Einen zwischenzeitlichen Aufenthalt in 

den Weinkellern der Einheimischen durfte an so einem 

langen Tag natuerlich nicht fehlen. Durch eine offizielle 

Weinprobe im Weingut der Familie Roth in Boly ein 

paar Tage vorher waren wir darauf gut vorbereitet. 

Franz Heilig, Vorsitzender Landesrat Ungarndeutscher 

Choere, Kapelle, und Tanzgruppen und Josef Jerger 

vom Weltdachverband der Donauschwaben brachten 

uns Vortraege ueber die Geschichte der Donauschwaben, 

den Gedenkstaetten im ehemaligen Jugoslawien, 

und den zum Teil eigenen traurigen Erfahrungen in 

den damaligen Konzentrationslagern. Eine Fahrt nach 

Serbien mit einem Besuch der Gedenkstaette des Vernichtungslagers 

in Gakowo mit Kranzniederlegung rundete 

den geschichtlichen Teil ab. In Serbien besuchten 

wir die Stadt Sombor mit ihren vielen Sehenswuerdigkeiten 

aus der Zeit von Maria Theresia und das oertliche 

Zentrum der Donauschwaben. Ein Besuch der 

Kulturstadt Fuenfkirchen mit Stadtfuehrung durch den 

Donauschwaben Zoltan Schmidt war im Programm 

ebenfalls enthalten. 

Die Tanzkurse und das Einstudieren von Taenzen 

kamen an den restlichen Tagen nicht zu kurz. Unser 

junger Tanzlehrer Peter Schweininger aus Saar hatte 

fuer uns dann zwischendurch noch einen Vortrag mit 

dem Thema Junge Schwaben in Ungarn. Zusaetzlich 

verbrachten wir einen schoenen und vor allem harmonischen 

Nachmittag mit dem Wemender Gesangsquartett, 

die uns ihre Lieder vortrugen und dann mit 

uns einstudierten. Wir singen einige Lieder davon bei 

Zusammenkuenften heute noch. Sicherlich nicht so 

schoen aber dafuer lauter. 

Musik und Tanz zogen sich auch sonst wie ein Faden 

durch diese schoene Zeit. Am ersten Samstag, das 

eigentliche Datum hatten wir zu dieser Zeit bereits aus 

unserem Gedaechtnis verbannt, waren wir in Goercsoendoboka 

bei einem Schwabenball eingeladen. Der 

Sonntag danach begann mit einer Fahrt nach Mohacz 

und einer Gedenkfeier an der Donau. Anschliessend 

ging es dann nach Babarc weiter, wo wir einem Gottesdienst 

mit Pfarrer ------- (muss ich noch erfragen, 

meine Eltern kennen ihn) beiwohnten. Eingeladen 

waren wir von der Tanzgruppe Babarz zu deren Jubilaeum. 

Der Tanzvorfuehrung folgte Kaffee und Kuchen 

im Vereinshaus und danach natuerlich Musik und Tanz 

bis spaet abends. Ein Datum durften wir nicht vergessen 

und das war Monikas Geburtstag am 23. Juni und 

dieser Tag wurde natuerlich ausgiebig gefeiert. Zur 

Stimmung trugen immer Hansi und Kaethi aus Spaichingen 

bei. Falls mal keine Blasmusik oder live band auf 

dem Programm stand dann konnten wir uns immer auf 

Hasi und sein Akkordeon verlassen.

Ein Highlight war sicherlich die Nachvollziehung einer 

schwowischen Hochzeit in Wemend. Es begann 

mit einem Besuch bei der ‘Braut’ und einem Vortrag 

ueber das Hochzeitskleid mit allem was dazugehoert. 

Mit Blasmusik gings dann durch das halbe Dorf zum 

‘Braeutigam’ Abholen, dann wieder zurueck zur Braut, 

und dann zum Gemeindehaus. Die ungarische Polizei 

hatte den Verkehr fuer diese Zeit komplett stillgelegt. 

Das ganze Dorf war auf den Beinen und stand Spalier. 

Im Gemeindehaus gab es dann Tanzvorfuehrungen, 

dazwischen Kaffee und Kuchen, und Gesang mit dem 

Wemender Quartett. Die Tanzgruppe aus Cleveland, 

USA war an diesem Tag in Babarc angekommen und 

kam dann ebenfalls zur Hochzeitsfeier. Mit Suppe und 

gefuelltem Kraut staerkte man sich dann bevor die Blasmusk 

bis Mitternacht zum Tanz aufspielte. Mit einem 

gemuetlichen Essen in der Fuelemuele Czarda in Villanykoevest 

und natuerlich bei Musik und Tanz liessen 

wir es am letzten Abend ausklingen bevor es dann am 

naechsten Tag Abschied nehmen hiess. Das Treffen 

war von Stefan Ihas dem Jugendleiter Weltdachverband 

fuer Europa perfekt organisiert, so dass es dann 

zum Abschied nur heissen konnte: Als Freunde kamen 

wir, als Freunde gehen wir.

Es war vor 76 Jahren im Sommer 1936. Die Schule 

war aus, wir hatten Sommerferien und die olympischen 

Spiele sollten demnächst in Berlin beginnen. Ich ging 

damals in die deutsche Schule in Beograd (Belgrad/ 

Jugoslawien), war 14 Jahre alt und das letzte Schuljahr 

würde im Herbst für mich anfangen. Es waren schöne 

Zeiten. An diesem gewissen Tag schickte mich meine 

Mutter in die Stadt um etwas zu besorgen. Belgrad war 

eine alte, interessante Stadt und ich strawanzte auch 

gerne herum. 

Am Rückweg musste ich die ”Slavia” überqueren. 

Diese war ein großer Verkehrsknoten in Belgrad. Einige 

Straßen fingen da an, andere hörten dort auf und 

Straßenbahnlinien hatten da ihren Anfang und ihr Ende. 

Ich ging zu Fuß um Geld zu sparen. Mir fiel auf, dass 

mehr Polizei tätig war als sonst, mischte mich unter 

die Leute und wartete auf das was da noch kommen 

sollte. Tatsächlich, nach kürzerer Zeit erschien über 

dem Hügel aus südlicher Richtung kommend eine 

sportlich bekleidete männliche Figur mit einem brennenden 

Holzstück oder so etwas Ähnlichem in der rechten 

Hand. Er lief mitten auf der Straße, da der Verkehr 

still stand. Damals war wenig Autoverkehr am Balkan, 

der noch recht altmodisch war. 

Als die Gestalt näher kam, war es ein junger Mann und 

das Holzstück in seiner Hand war nicht aus Holz, sondern 

das metallene Gehäuse der brennenden olympischen 

Fackel. Der Läufer wurde nicht angejubelt und angefeuert, 

wie das heutzutage der Fall ist. Stillschweigend 

lief er die Straße entlang und war bald allen Blicken entschwunden. 

Die paar Autos setzten ihre Fahrt fort und 

die Kutscher fluchten recht und schlugen auf die armen

Pferde drauflos. Die Fackel wurde Richtung Norden getragen 

über Budapest und Wien nach Berlin. Einige Leute 

sprachen von der Olympiade in Memaka (Deutschland) 

und das war alles; doch für mich war dies ein großes 

Erlebnis. Ich eilte heim, um meinen Eltern und meiner 

kleineren Schwester davon zu erzählen. 

Meine Schulfreundin von damals brachte mir ein 

kleines Taschentuch mit den fünf olympischen Ringen 

zur Erinnerung an die Olympiade in Berlin mit. Sie 

war Reichsdeutsche und ihr Vater war im deutschen 

Konsulat in Belgrad angestellt. Das Tüchlein hatte ich 

sehr geschätzt. Leider ging es mir im Laufe der turbulenten 

Nachkriegszeiten verloren. 

Im Laufe der Jahre dachte ich immer weniger an dieses 

Ereignis. Es kamen schwere Zeiten, Krieg, Flucht usw. 

Das Schicksal verschlug mich nach den U.S.A. Ich hätte 

wohl nie gedacht, dass ich die Fackel nochmals sehen 

werde. Vor einigen Tagen an der “Antiken Roadshow“ 

brachte eine Frau eine Fackel und wollte wissen, 

welchen Wert sie hätte. Das Jahr 1936 war an ihr eingraviert. 

Was noch darauf stand konnte ich nicht entziffern. 

Mir kamen Tränen in die Augen und vor lauter 

Aufregung habe ich nicht mitbekommen, wo sie die 

Fackel her hatte. 

Nach all den Jahren sehe ich die Fackel wieder. 

Unglaublich. Ich sehe mich noch als kleines Mädchen 

unter den Leuten stehen um ja nichts zu übersehen. 

Das Leben und das Schicksal können schon eigenartig 

sein, bin aber dankbar und froh, dass ich die Fackel 

nochmal gesehen habe.

30 men’s leagues. 

We played on Sunday mornings @ Berra Park 

on the Hill from September through February.

Spotlight on Unsung Heroes 

In the late fifties, a young man born in Sackelhausen, Romania came from Austria 

to join his family in St. Louis. Having studied engineering in Steyer, Upper Austria, 

he soon found a job at Southwest Truck Body in St.Louis as a draftsman. Being 

a talented musician, he had formed a dance band in Steyer. Naturally, he brought 

his love for music to his new homeland and soon was playing in a little band called 

“Die Blauen Dragoner.” He and his wife Hilde joined the St. Louis German Cultural 

Society and from there the talk started to form a brass band. He became one of the 

founding members of the “Deutschmeister Brass Band of St. Louis.” 

He was very successful in his occupation and advanced to become the CEO of the 

company. 

A tragic accident forced his retirement and soon he was looking for something to 

do......... 

In 1996 he agreed to become the Editor of the St. Louis German Cultural Society 

Newsletter. Within a short time it became a good way to reach our members and was 

well received by the membership.

It seems like just yesterday that we put our equipment 

away for the winter, but now we have it all out 

and are preparing for the 2012 season. We are looking 

forward to new venues this year, including the 

Highland, Illinois 175th Jubilee, and the Lake St. 

Louis Oktoberfest. We will be back to long standing 

venues also, including the Ottertoberfest at the Zoo 

and the St. Charles Oktoberfest. Please check our 

website for updates to our schedule of performances 

away from the Verien. 

The band had its annual meeting on January 18th and 

elected its officers for new terms. After many years of 

service, Pete Krege stepped down as president and, 

passing the baton, nominated Helmuth Glatt for the 

two year term of president. We

tiest tuba player, Teri Gudowicz, gave birth to Miriam 

Elizabeth Green. Miriam was 19 inches long and 

weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces. 

In each of our newsletter articles we bring you some 

background information about one of our musicians. 

It is only fitting that we learn about Teri this time. Here 

is what she told us about her background and how 

she came to the Deutschmeister. “I have been involved 

in music pretty much my whole life. I started 

on piano when I was four, and then switched to brass 

in grade school. When I was old enough to join the 

band I played trumpet and baritone in grade school, 

and switched to tuba in junior high (it was about as 

big as me). Tuba is definitely my favorite instrument to 

play. I played tuba in the band in 

high school, and in the orchestra 

at Northwestern University. I 

had a little break after that, until 

I found Deutschmeister. 

“I am not German (you can 

probably tell by the Polish 

name), but I do speak a little 

German (German was one of 

my majors at Northwestern), 

and I do love polka! I married 

my husband Jason Green on 

March 20, 2010 at St Francis 

Xavier Church in St Louis.”

Erinnerungen 


Nahe beim Fluss und nicht allzu weit vom grossen See 

stand das alte, grosse Haus am Rande des Dorfes. 

Niemand wußte genau das Alter dessen, aber dem 

Baustil nach zu schätzen war es einige hundert Jahre 

alt. Viele Generationen fanden darin Geborgenheit und 

Heimat. 

Die Gegend ist ein Hügelland mit fruchtbaren Äckern 

und Wiesen. Es werden viel Getreide, Rueben und 

Kartoffel angepflanzt. Es gab und gibt da noch immer 

grosse Tannenwälder, die dauernd aufgeforstet werden. 

Das Land war längst den Römern bekannt, und es gibt 

in der Nähe noch heute eine Spur einer mit Steinen gepflasterten 

Strasse. 

Das alte Haus hatte im ersten Stock eine Kammer 

für Holz und einen gewölbten Keller darunter zum 

Aufbewahren der Getränke, Brot und Gemüse, die dort 

überwintert wurden. Die Südseite nahmen der Gemüse 

und Obstgarten ein, die auch für uns Kinder viel Arbeit 

waren. Wir mußten Unkraut jäten und Beeren pflücken 

und im Obstgarten das Fallobst auflesen–aus dem Most 

gemacht wurde. Durch die Mitte ran ein Bächlein, das 

dann weiter durch die anschliessende Wiese lief. 

Im Früling um die Osterzeit war das Leben dort herlich für 

uns Kinder. Auf der Wiese blühten die Schlüsselblumen, 

die wir gerne pflückten und voller Freude der Mutter 

brachten. Im Bach sahen wir oft kleine Fische, die der 

Lehrer Forellen nannte und sie hin und wieder mal fing 

zum Essen. Wir Kinder hüpften über den Bach, und 

öfters fiel eines hinein und wurde dann von den andern 

an beiden Armen heraus gezogen. Wenn die Obstbäume 

blühten sassen wir gerne mit einem Buch an den Stamm 

gelehnt und beobachteten die Bienen wie sie von einer 

Blüte zur andern flogen um den Nektar zu trinken. Dabei 

wurde man auch manchmal von etwas gestochen das 

ziemliche Pein verursachte. 

Ostern war das größste Kirchenfest des Jahres und fand 

fast immer im April statt. Nach einer langen Fastenzeit, 

die der Einfachheit des Haushalts auch für Kinder galt, 

durfte man dann nach der Auferstehungsfeier alles 

essen. Die Feier war immer gut besucht, und schon von 

außen hörte man: «Christus ist erstanden.» 

Das nie vergessene Ostern meiner Kindheit war ein enttäuschendes 

Erlebnis. Unsere kleine Schwester sah 

ganz früh am Ostermorgen zum Fenster hinaus und 

schrie: «Da rennen zwei Osterhasen» und lachte wie verrückt. 

Wir sahen sie dann auch wie sie von einem Nest 

zum anderen liefen und Geschenke hinein legten. Bis 

dahin war ich noch nie so entäuscht im Leben. Ahnte

ich ja die Wahrheit schon eine Zeitlang, aber der Beweis 

zerstörte einen Traum der Kindheit. Wir fanden dann am 

Morgen was der «Osterhase» uns brachte: Zucker- und 

Schokoladehasen, Brötchen, eine Orange und meistens 

ein Ball. Ganz nahe war die Kapelle mit einer leeren 

Wand, die gut war zum Ballwerfen und dann wieder auffangen. 

Eines Tages sahen wir ein grosses Etwas über unser 

Haus fliegen. Es war länglich und oval und wir erfuhren 

von den Eltern dass es ein «Zeppelin» war, der nicht zu 

weit weg am grossen See gebaut wurde. Autos fuhren 

ja oft nahe am Haus vorbei, aber das «Luftschiff» war für 

uns ein Wunder. 

Ich erinnere mich genau an die erste Autofahrt, sie ist mir 

nur zu gut in Erinnerung geblieben. Ich saß weinend vor 

Schmerzen im Arztauto auf dem Weg ins Krankenhaus 

und hatte Todesangst vor der Operation dort. Danach 

lag ich als einziges Kind in einem Zimmer voller alten, 

jammernden Weibern. Meine Mutter besuchte mich 

jeden Tag mit dem Fahrrad und nach einer Woche hatte 

das böse Schicksal ein Ende. 

Kurz danach fing die Schule an–die erste Klasse für 

mich. Sie war von unserem Haus nur über der Strasse 

und war ein grosses Zimmer für acht Klassen mit einem 

schwarzen Holzofen drin. Die Lehrerwohnung war 

über dem Schulzimmer, und der Lehrer konnte alles 

beobachten was wir im Hof trieben. Es war ein ungutes 

Gefühl wenn er uns zanken oder gar raufen sah. Er war 

vom Lande und arbeitete mit Vorliebe in seinem Garten. 

Wir hofften als Nachbarn auf bessere Behandlung, aber 

das war leider nicht der Fall! 

Sehr gut ist mir die Weihnachtszeit im Gedächtnis. 

Meine Eltern besassen ein Stück Wald; von dort holte

der Vater am Tage vorher eine kleinere Tanne, die nie 

perfekt gewachsen war. Die Schönen waren ihm zu 

schade zum Aufstellen und Trocknen im Wohnzimmer. 

Das Aroma der frischen Tanne ist mir unvergesslich 

und unvergleichlich mit den sogenannten frischen am 

Strasseneck. Wir Knder durften die Tanne schmücken 

mit bunten Kugeln. Unter dem Baum stand die vom 

Grossvater geerbte, steinerne Krippe mit der heiligen 

Familie, Hirten und Schafen. Am Heiligen Abend saß 

die Familie davor und betete und sang: «Stille Nacht» 

und , «Ihr Kinderlein kommet» Wir gingen früh schlafen 

um am nächsten Tag schon gleich zu sehen was das

Christkind uns brachte. Es war viel grosszügiger als der 

Osterhase, und die Eltern staunten sehr darüber. Es war 

ja ein Wunder daß das Christkind überhaupt durch das 

Schlüsselloch in der Haustüre kam–wenn auch noch so 

klein. 

Im Laufe der Jahre gab es keine Wunder mehr, nur noch 

rauhe Tatsachen! Die Erinnerungen daran sind unterschiedlich. 

Am Liebsten denkt man an gute Stunden und 

Tage und bewahrt sie im Gedächtnis wie die schönen 

Zeiten in der elterlichen Liebe und Fürsorge. Es war 

einmal und kommt nie wieder. 

A Life Span of a Century Plus Years 

This past February we lost our longest living member. Frau Theresia Heitzmann passed 

away just short of her 102 n d birthday. We extend our sympathies to the Heitzmann and 

Wendl families. 

In considering a lifespan of this magnitude it is interesting to reflect on all the significant 

worldwide events that occurred during her lifetime: 

• Theresia was born in a village in Hungary which at that time was part of the 

Austro-Hungarian Empire; 

• At the time of her birth Franz-Joseph was the Kaiser of the Austro- 

Hungarian Empire. . .William Howard Taft was president of the United States; 

• The mass production of the automobile began; 

• The end of the First World War saw the dissolution of the Austro- 

Hungarian Empire; 

• The great worldwide depression took place; 

• Commercial air travel became a reality; 

• Atomic energy was developed; 

• World War II resulted in the disbursement of the ethnic German communities 

from the southeastern states of Europe; 

Frau Heitzmann with her family came to the United States in the early 1950’s; 

• The United States participated in several world conflicts such as Korea, 

Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan; 

• The transistor was invented which led to computerization and the internet. 

• The Space Age began; 

• European communism rose and the dissolution of the Soviet Union took 

place; 

• The great worldwide recession took place.

This year, we celebrated our annual 

Rosenball in which the Jugendgruppe 

performed multiple ballroom dances. Each 

member of the group has put in many 

hours of hard work and collaboration in 

order to perfect the dances. The dance 

instructors, Jennifer and Jessica, worked 

extremely hard in putting together the 

dances and making sure the final touches 

were up to par during Rosenball under 

the direction of Rosemarie Ficken. With 

the group being the largest it has been in 

many years, this was quite a feat. Some of 

the favorite dances of the evening included 

the Landler, Waltz, and Tango. 

Later in the evening, the retiring Kӧnig, 

Carson Box, and Kӧnigin, Emily Vander- 

Pluym, passed the crowns on to the reigning 

Kӧnig, Alex Eder, and Kӧnigin, Lisa 

Stark. This annual performance serves as 

a fundraiser for the Jugendgruppe. The 

raffle tickets sold quickly and prizes that 

were donated by family and friends found 

new owners. The Jugendgruppe would 

like to thank everyone who helped make 

such an event possible, especially the new 

Fest Committee, wonderful leaders, and 

our parents.

Where Are They Now? 

Tommy Heddell – a very active member of our youth group – has completed 

his education and is a full time member of the workforce. After graduating 

college, he followed the old advice of “Go West Young Man” and relocated 

to California in search of his dream job in the field of graphic arts. We 

believe he may have done just that. He recently accepted a job with Sony 

Corporation in the film-making industry. In fact, if you have seen the movies 

“Star Wars 3-D” and “The Immortals” and you carefully looked at the film 

credits, you would have seen Tommy’s name. 

Congratulations to Tommy. We wish him further success.

In Germany and Austria the maypole (or Maibaum) 

is a tradition going back to the 16th century. It is a 

decorated tree or tree trunk that is usually erected 

either on the first of May – in Baden and Swabia –- or 

on the evening before, as in East Frisia. In most areas, 

especially in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and 

Austria, it is common to have a ceremony to erect the 

maypole on the village green. It is often combined 

with a village festival that usually takes place on April 

30, May 1, or at Pentecost (Whitsun). This tradition is 

especially strong in the villages of the Bavarian Alps 

where the raising of the traditional maypole in the village 

square is a cause for much celebration. The pole 

is usually painted in the Bavarian colors of white and 

blue and decorated with emblems depicting local 

crafts and industry. 

Just before the Maibaum is erected, there may be a 

procession through the village, usually ending up at a 

central place and/or restaurant and usually watched 

by crowds of spectators and accompanied by a brass 

band. The actual installation of the tree then takes 

place in the afternoon or evening. While the crowds 

usually while away the time drinking beer and eating 

sausages, the young men busy themselves with 

decorating the maypole to get the symbols of various 

trades representing the region into the right position.

The 7th Annual 

BEST TRIVIA NITE IN ST. LOUIS 

What a wonderful time everyone had at the Best Trivia 

Nite in St. Louis on March 24th! With 32 tables of 8 we 

had 256 anxious contestants on 32 teams eager to win 

the top prize!!! 

For the last 3 years the annual Trivia Nite has become a 

fundraiser for the Jugendgruppe to help offset the cost 

of their planned trip to Germany in 2014. The support 

received from parents, friends, members of the various 

German organizations in St. Louis, and first-time attendees 

has been outstanding. Three years ago we received 

several compliments from those attending who 

stated, ”This is the best trivia nite in St. Louis,” and so 

the annual trivia night received its well-deserved name 

– The Best Trivia Nite in St. Louis! We have received a 

reputation in St. Louis. Each year we have to live up to 

this reputation and, we not only live up to it each year, 

we do our best to surpass the previous year! 

What makes this such a great trivia nite? There’s no one 

thing. It’s a combination of great people who volunteer 

their time to make this a special event every year, generous 

donors from businesses, individuals, and organizations 

who provide the fabulous prizes, and the members 

of the Jugendgruppe who take care of everything 

from setting up snacks and soda to scoring and judging 

each round.

What kind of prizes did we have? Everything from helicopter 

sightseeing trips around the St. Louis Riverfront 

and dinner on the river, to spa treatments and works 

of art. The winners walked off with $200 for the first 

prize – not bad for sitting around and having a good 

time!!! Those lucky 35 people who simply showed up 

and won an attendance prize received gift bags each 

filled with a variety of prizes ranging from Proctor and 

Gamble products to travel essentials. Winners of Heads 

or Tails each walked away with a pair of tickets to a St. 

Louis Cardinals game. 

There were too many laughs, lots of oohs and ahhs as 

the teams muddled over the questions, and sometimes 

a few groans when it was realized the answer was just 

not was someone thought. But in the end, there were 

cheers and applause for another fun evening and the 

members of the Jugendgruppe who all came to the 

stage to say thank you to all who attended for their 

continued support. 

Look for the announcement of the date for the 2013 

Best Trivia Nite in St. Louis. We hope to make it another 

successful, sold out event and can’t wait to welcome 

everyone to a night of friends, fun, and facts.
