Optical Post-process Measurement System
for PETER WOLTERS DDG Machines
Non-contact thickness measurement
PETER WOLTERS GmbH has developed a non-contact
system for measuring component thickness as an alternative
to conventional mechanical-measurement systems.
This system eliminates the disadvantages associated
with mechanical measurement, such as measurement
errors caused by measuring-tip wear, as well as possible
scratch marks on the work piece surface. It also makes
it possible to measure the thickness of components
with special surface contours, such as holes, grooves,
notches, and embossing, as well as extremely thin-walled
workpieces. The system employs optical measurement,
compensating for the above-mentioned disadvantages
associated with the tactile systems that have been used
to date for post-process measurement. At the same time,
integrated compressed-air nozzles protect the optical
path between the sensor and the work piece surface and
provide a targeted airflow that prevents unwanted work
piece movements and cleans the measuring surface.
Sensor Technology for the Optical Measurement of
Grinding-wheel Position in a PETER WOLTERS DDG 600
This measurement system makes it possible to measure
the lower grinding-wheel surface up to a grinding gap of
2 mm. The grinding-wheel position is detected by means
of optical distance measurement during the grinding process
at peripheral speeds of up to 60 m/s. With reference
to a representative grinding-wheel radius, this measurement
technology can be used for a control system that
keeps the position of the lower grinding wheel constant.
With a second, separate control system, the position
of the upper wheel can be adjusted by means of postprocess
thickness measurement. With this system, the
optimal grinding-gap position can be maintained for a
long period of time.
This technology offers the following advantages:
• Reduction of grinding-wheel wear
• Reduction of costs for dressing tools
• Increased output owing to a reduction of non-productive
times
