SURGERY
MR. MILIND S. SHROTRI
MBBS, MS, FRCS, MD
University Hospitals Aintree, Liverpool, UK.
Introduction
• Laparoscopic gastric surgery is gaining popularity
worldwide
• Not only for benign gastric lesions but also for
of this minimal invasive technique
• Adequacy of lymphadenectomy as compared to open
surgery has been proved beyond doubt
Advantages
Magnified and improved vision– Aids surgery
Less postoperative pain – Faster Recovery
Shorter Hospital Stay
Better short-term term outcomes
Advantages
Magnified and improved vision– Aids surgery
Less postoperative pain – Faster Recovery
Shorter Hospital Stay
Better short-term term outcomes
Limitations
Needs dedicated equipment and surgical expertise
Specialist team approach
Needs more evidence on long term/oncological
outcomes
Aim
Audit of initial experience in laparoscopic
gastric surgery at UHA
Methods
• Mixed retrospective analysis from a single surgical
unit
• Period: April 2005 to June 2009
• 42 patients underwent laparoscopic gastric surgery
• Mixed selection criteria applied
• Mortality/morbidity & stay studied
Results
• All 42 patients underwent laparoscopic
procedures successfully with no
conversion to open surgery
