General Information
Northern Health was established in July 2000 under the
Health Services (Governance & Accountability) Act and
under the auspices of the Minister for Health, the
Hon. Daniel Andrews.
It provides a wide range of healthcare services to a
catchment of approximately 500,000 people living in
Melbourne’s middle to outer northern suburbs and the
semi-rural regions beyond the urban fringe.
Northern Health comprises:
• Broadmeadows Health Service
• Bundoora Extended Care Centre
• Craigieburn Health Service
• Panch Health Service
• The Northern Hospital
Consultancies
There were no individual consultancies greater than
$100,000.
The total sum expended on the 22 consultancies each less
than $100,000 was $263,000

These are standard Workcover claims, which are defined as
those claims that are over the statutory employer excess and
a reported to VWA during the financial year.
Building Act 1993
During the financial year, it has been Northern Health’s
practice to obtain building permits for new projects, and
Certificates of Occupancy or Certificates of Final Inspection
for all completed projects.
Registered Building Practitioners have been involved
with all new building work projects and were supervised
by Northern Health’s Director of Capital Planning &
Development (Building Registration Number CB-U 1944).
Completed & Operational as at 30/06/10:
• $1.5m Corporate Office relocation to
The Northern Hospital;
• $5.2m Infrastructure services upgrade at
The Northern Hospital;
• $2.5m Maternity bed extension; and
• $0.4m Portable office accommodation.
Current projects in construction:
• $19.4m Mental Health extension at
The Northern Hospital.
Current projects in design phase:
• $47.4m Academic and Research Precinct at
The Northern Hospital;
• $7.4m Cardiac Catheter Laboratory; and
• $6.2m Front Entry Redevelop at The Northern
Hospital.
Current projects in the planning and funding phase:
• additional Operating and Endoscopy Rooms at
The Northern Hospital;
• strategic Master Plan redevelopment of
The Northern Hospital; and
• finishing Kitchen Redevelopment.
National Competition Policy
Services that are regularly market tested in accordance with
the government’s Competitive Neutrality Guidelines include:
patient Transport;
waste Management;
car parking;
fleet Management;
supply;
medical Imaging/Radiology;
pathology;
food Service;
biomedical Engineering;
cleaning Services;
laundry;
security;
retail services;
financial services;
information and Communications Technology;
clinical Services;
building and Engineering Services; and
community Services.
Market testing of services will continue as scheduled,
and according to the contract cycle, into the 2010/11
financial year.
