THE LONE STAR Conference should eliminate the divisional standings.
They are confusing and distract from the important standings, those that
determine the LSC champion.
This season, Texas A&M-Commerce won the North Division with a 5-0 record,
yet the Lions were 5-4 in the LSC standings.
There was a four-way tie in the South Division. The three conference
champions—TAMUK, Tarleton State, Midwestern State—were at the top of the
standings along with West Texas. Yet West Texas was fifth in the final conference
standings.
The league will continue to be divisional in football but the division standings
should be deemphasized and the LSC standings moved to the forefront. That’s not
the way they’ve been. Some newspapers don’t run the conference standings, only
the divisional.
THERE WAS A noticeable lack of Lone Star Conference participants in the
NCAA Division II national cross country meet.
There were no men’s or women’s teams in the big meet.
The LSC women had no individual entries.
There were three men’s individual runners. Amos Sang of Abilene Christian was
fourth, Julius Korir of Cameron was 23 rd and Jared McNeil of Tarleton was 34 th .
Adams (Colo.) State won the men’s and women’s titles.
Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific (Wash.) was the women’s individual winner and
Reuben Mwei of Adams State took the men’s title.
JAVELINAS NEED TO rally around John Randle during the next round of fan
voting in the NFL Hall of Fame process.
Randle has made it to the semifinal round of the voting, and he was also one of
the fans choice candidates for the Hall.
Fans can go to www.fanschoice.com daily and cast a vote for Randle.
The website is slow and you’ll have to be patient. But if the Javelinas will vote
for John as they have for Javelina head football coach Bo Atterberry in the Liberty
Mutual coach of the year balloting, Randle will move up considerably from his
current No. 23 position.
SCOTT GRANTHAM, THE Tarleton State quarterback this past season who has
a year of eligibility remaining, has said he won’t return to the Texans next season.
Grantham, 22, has received his bachelor’s degree.
THE JAVELINA WOMEN were the unofficial winners of the Turkey Day
Shootout last weekend in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas went 2-0 in the two-day meet. Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas
A&M International were 1-1 and Huston-Tillotson was 0-2.
TODD WHITTEN, FORMER head football coach at Tarleton State, was released
as head coach at Sam Houston State last week after five seasons in the Bearkat
position.
Two Lone Star Conference head coaches are being mentioned as possible
replacements.
Don Carthel of West Texas A&M and Chris Thomsen of Abilene Christian were
mentioned as candidates in the article on Whitten’s termination.
THE TOP FOUR seeds in the NCAA Division II national football playoffs lost last
weekend.
This weekend’s semifinal round will see three No. 2 seeds and a No. 3 seed
playing for the right to participate in the national championship game Dec. 12 in
Florence, Ala.
The remaining teams are California (Pa.), Carson-Newman (Tenn.), Grand Valley
(Mich.) State and Northwest Missouri.
The No. 1 ranked team, Central Washington, went down as did the defending
national champion Minnesota-Duluth.
YOU HAVE TO laugh when a sportswriter or sports director writes or makes a
statement that he or she has to “eat” later.
One such remark came last week.
One of the Corpus Christi sports directors said, while promoting the Texas A&M-
Corpus Christi men’s basketball game with Texas A&M International, that the
Islanders would be able to “name their score”.
It’s doubtful that the Islanders would have “named the score” a three-point
victory.
The Javelinas opened with Texas A&M International in Laredo and took a 70-58
victory.
MISFORTUNE HAS STRUCK former Javelina Al Harris for the second year in a
row.
Harris, starting cornerback for the Green Bay Packers, injured a knee with 11
minutes remaining in a game with the San Francisco 49ers.
Harris has been one of the most durable of the Packer players. He has missed
just four games during his 11-plus year career and those came last season when he
suffered a lacerated spleen.
He had played in 175 consecutive games.
There was no report from the Packers as to how long Harris is expected to be
out of the lineup.
Harris was an All-Lone Star Conference performer for the Javelinas in 1995 and
1996.
THE JAVELINA FOOTBALL team played eight home games in 2009 and there
was an average of 11,155 at each of the games.
The Javelinas defeated the Rattlers
earlier in San Antonio.
The Rattlers are led in scoring and
rebounding by Kevin Kotsur, 6-8 freshman
center from La Vernia. He scores 15.2 a
game and has a 7.5 rebound average.
Curtis Mitchell, 5-8 senior guard from
Milwaukee, Wis., has a 14.3 scoring
average.
Texas A&M International had a 2-4
record going into a Tuesday night game
with Texas State in San Marcos.
The Dustdevils are led in scoring by St.
Paul Latham, 6-4 junior forward from
Houston (Westside) who has a 15.0
average. Bernard Burrell, 6-6 junior forward
from Compton, Calif., leads the rebounding
with a 4.0 average.
At first glance, it might appear TAMUC
has some major rebounding to do this
season. Not only did the Lions introduce a
new head coach in Nicole Anderson but
they must find a way to replace one of the
best scorers, not only in LSC history, but at
the Division II level as well.
Britney Jordan, who averaged 31.3
points per game last year and became the
Lions’ first All-American, was the 35 th
overall pick of the WNBA’s Los Angeles
Sparks.
But the Lions aren’t exactly short on
talent, especially with the return of several
starters and role players, along with another
strong newcomer class.
Anderson’s first group will include
junior guard Genevieve Campbell, who
started 26 games last year and averaged 8.9
No basketball program in the Lone Star
Conference, on either the men’s or women’s
side, has been as consistent as the Lady
Buffs, who look to continue their
dominance this decade.
Coming off a 28-6 record and the
school’s first trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in
12 years, head coach Krista Gerlich should
be expecting yet another exciting season in
Canyon.
The Lady Buffs have won five of the
last six LSC South Division regular-season
titles, and have won three of the last four
LSC championships.
But last year’s run to the Elite Eight
might have been the most impressive
season for the Lady Buffs, who lost not
only their top player but arguably the
greatest player in LSC history.
Despite Emily Brister’s season-ending
knee injury in mid-February, the Lady Buffs
rallied together to claim another LSC title
and then the South Central Region as well.
But WT will have to replace more than
just Brister, an All-American and four-time
LSC South player of the year. Courtney Lee
was the defensive player of the year and
Jamie Dreiling earned LSC championship
tournament MVP honors.
This year’s group will be led by senior
point guard Holly Isaacs, who led the team
in three-pointers last season, hitting 56 of a
league-high 132 attempts. Isaacs, a threeyear
letterwinner for the Lady Buffs, scored
6.1 points a game.
Junior guard Joni Unruh averaged 9.3
points last season while starting 32 of 34
games. In the first two games after Brister
suffered her injury, Unruh led the team in
scoring with 18 and 19 points against
Tarleton State and Angelo State,
respectively. She also led the team in
rebounding in eight games, including four
times in double-digits.
Other returning players include senior
center Ceciley Johnson (3.3 points per
game), junior guard Megan McLain, who
averaged 4.4 points last year. Returning
sophomores Ashley Leven and Michelle
Brister, the younger sister of Emily, should
contribute more in their second seasons.
The Lady Buffs have several
newcomers including three Division I
transfers. Senior guard/forward Maddy
Brown played two seasons at Texas Tech.
Center Cara Lambert, who played two
years at Idaho State, should provide size
and experience in the paint while forward
Aly Sherman transferred from Central
Arkansas.
West Texas A&M men
For the first time in six years, West
Texas A&M missed the LSC championship
tournament but head coach Rick Cooper
has amassed a talented group of
newcomers that could get the Buffs back
into the postseason once again.
Cooper enters his 17 th season on the
Buffaloes’ bench with a 311-152 record.
Despite last season’s 16-11 mark, with a 6-6
conference record, WT has been one of the
most consistent teams in the LSC, leading
all other schools in tournament titles (six)
and appearances (11).
But to get back there this season,
Cooper needs some new faces to emerge as
leaders, considering only two players with
starting experience return.
LSC Basketball Preseason Series
Senior guard Nick Burns started 23
games last season, ranking second in
scoring at 11.2 points per game. Burns led
the team in three-pointers made (59) and
steals (33), and was second in assists with
73.
Senior forward Bijan Dotson started
only half of the games last season but
ranked third in scoring at 8.9 points and he
led the team in rebounding, pulling down
5.3 boards a game. Dotson also led the
Buffs with 18 blocked shots.
Other returning Buffs with limited
experience include guard Chris Tucker and
forward Tory Fernandez.
Headlining the newcomers are four
junior college transfers including forward
Macquiese Holocombe (Bevil State CC0
and guard LaDarius Hall (South Plains CC).
Guard Joe Mincey comes from Coastal
Georgia CC and forward Donnie Kidd
played at Feather River CC.
The Buffs are also counting on
transfers Justin Tubb (Midland College)
and forward Alex Davis (Wayland Baptist).
East Central women
Despite a 9-19 record and missing the
postseason for the second straight year,
head coach Kent Franz is hoping his East
Central Club picks up the pace this year—
literally.
*LSC South Division games.
Entering his 19 th season coaching the
Lady Tigers, Franz is looking for more uptempo
style of play this year, thanks in large
part to a stacked guard position.
Junior guard Casi Rawls is the team’s
leading returning scorer at 11.6 points per
game. Rawls led the team in scoring 11
times last year, including a 20-point game
against Cameron. She will team up with
junior guard Laura Harris (4.9), sophomore
guard Jordan Thompson and guard/forward
Indhira Ramirez, a junior who redshirted last
year.
“We’ve very deep at the guard spot,”
Rebound
Rochelle Ikeni, Javelina junior
center from Fresno, Calif., grabs a
rebound in the Javelinas’ 90-60
Lone Star Conference crossover
victory over Texas A&M-Commerce
last weekend in the Steinke
Physical Education Center.
Franz said. “So we are hoping to play an
up-tempo game and create more easy
baskets off the dribble and spot up for the
three. We want to create situations where
we have the numbers advantage and attack
the basket.”
Despite the guard play, it’s not likely
the Lady Tigers won’t have a post
presence. Senior center Danielle Cox
started half the games last season but will
be counted on for a bigger role this year.
She averaged 6.0 points and 4.4
rebounds a game but once had 20 boards
last year against Puerto Rico-Cavey.
Forward/post Angelea Kalanoska
averaged 7.6 points last year and 3.5
boards, but also proved to be a deep threat,
hitting 40 percent from three-point range.
“She an outstanding three-point
shooter who has the ability to stretch the
defense,” Franz said on Kalanoska.
“Because of depth issues at the post, she
may be called upon to play inside some.”
Kalanoska scored a career-high 22
points in a one-point loss to Texas A&M-
Commerce.
The Lady Tigers welcome newcomers
Krista Bullis, a junior college transfer from
Northern-Enid and freshmen Jourdan Clark
and Regan Browne.
While ECU will look to score more easy
baskets, the Lady Tigers excelled in
preventing those on the other end. ECU
ranked first in the LSC last year in field-goal
defense, allowing opponents to shoot just
37.5 percent from the floor.
