watershed basis are being sanctioned. From 1999-2000, new IWDP projects are<br />

prioritized for sanction in consultation with the State Governments.<br />

The basic objective <strong>of</strong> the program is aimed at an integrated development <strong>of</strong><br />

wastelands/degraded lands based on village/micro watershed plans. These plans are<br />

prepared by the Watershed Associations/ Watershed Committees with the technical<br />

guidance <strong>of</strong> the Watershed Development Teams <strong>of</strong> the Project Implementation<br />

Agencies (PIAs) after taking into consideration the land capability, site condition and<br />

local needs <strong>of</strong> the people. The Program aims at fulfillment <strong>of</strong> the following objectives:<br />

Developing wastelands/degraded lands on watershed basis, keeping in view the<br />

capability <strong>of</strong> land, site conditions and local needs promoting the overall economic<br />

development and improving the socio-economic condition <strong>of</strong> the resource poor and<br />

disadvantaged sections inhabiting the program areas. Restoring ecological balance by<br />

harnessing, conserving and developing natural resources i.e. land, water, vegetative<br />

cover.<br />

Encouraging village community for:<br />

(a) Sustained community action for the operation and maintenance <strong>of</strong> assets created<br />

and further development <strong>of</strong> potential <strong>of</strong> the natural resources in the watershed.<br />

(b) Simple, easy and affordable technological solutions and institutional arrangements<br />

that make use <strong>of</strong>, and build upon, local technical knowledge and available material.<br />

The main aim <strong>of</strong> the project is employment generation, poverty alleviation,<br />

community empowerment and development <strong>of</strong> human and other economic<br />

resources <strong>of</strong> the village.<br />

In <strong>Uttarakhand</strong> State 134 MWS in all the 13 districts have been taken up for treatment.<br />

It is proposed that about 3 lakh ha. wasteland would be treated through this program.<br />

NWDPRA is a centrally sponsored program for scientific land use through development<br />

<strong>of</strong> integrated farming system on the principles <strong>of</strong> watershed management in each<br />

mandal where the arable area under assured means <strong>of</strong> irrigation is less than 30%. The<br />

objectives <strong>of</strong> the program are: conservation, development and sustainable management<br />
