The above matrix is an interpolation <strong>of</strong> the agriculture produce in <strong>Uttarakhand</strong> based on<br />

their relative economic returns as well as their relative market prospects. The analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

returns is based on the present conditions. Whereas the state needs to analyze this<br />

matrix and should prioritize on the commodity to be produced so as to generate revenue<br />

both for the state as well as the farmers. The various produce <strong>of</strong> the state has been<br />

categorized as stars, cash cows, dogs, and question marks.<br />

Star: Stars are those produce which have relatively high returns for the producer as well<br />

as have high market growth prospects. The rate <strong>of</strong> return are higher than compared to<br />

other crops, also per unit costs are reducing due to economies <strong>of</strong> scale. Off-season<br />

vegetables are one <strong>of</strong> the star performers within this category. Due to its varied agro<br />

climatic conditions the state is able to produce <strong>of</strong>f-season vegetables, which have high<br />

demand in the plains as well as city markets. The agro-ecological diversity also<br />

promotes cultivation <strong>of</strong> large number <strong>of</strong> subtropical as well as temperate fruits, which<br />

have high economic value as well as better growth prospects in future. Similarly the<br />

state has a unique resource in terms <strong>of</strong> medicinal and aromatic plants which at present<br />

is a trade worth fifty crores, has very high market prospect, it has the potential to be a<br />
