Micro Credit : The State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Uttarakhand</strong> has a total population <strong>of</strong> about 85 lakhs most <strong>of</strong><br />

which resides in rural areas. As per the recent BPL survey 2002 carried out, out <strong>of</strong><br />

13.10 lakh rural households in the state 6.21 lakh households belong to BPL families<br />

which constituted 47.42% <strong>of</strong> the total households.<br />

After formation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Uttarakhand</strong> State, vigorous efforts have been made to promote micro<br />

finance with active association <strong>of</strong> NGOs‟ Banks, Government <strong>Department</strong> through<br />

various schemes. As at the end <strong>of</strong> October 2007, about 38000 SHGs have been formed<br />

in the State and about 23000 SHGs have been credit linked with Banks. The SHG<br />

movement, though has reached each and every district <strong>of</strong> the State, the spread,<br />

however, is uneven and the progress in promotion and credit linkage <strong>of</strong> SHGs is not<br />

encouraging in Haridwar, Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraparayag, Champawat and<br />

Pithoragarh districts.<br />
