LIVESTOCK BASED PRODUCTION SYSTEM<br />
Livestock based production system is an integral component <strong>of</strong> agriculture in rural<br />
economy. Nearly 70% <strong>of</strong> the population residing in rural areas is engaged with<br />
traditional systems <strong>of</strong> animal husbandry. However, to improve production and<br />
generate livelihood support to the rural poor for upliftment <strong>of</strong> their economy, scientific<br />
ways <strong>of</strong> animal based production systems need to be intensified.<br />
Cattle based production system: Cattle rearing are an integral part <strong>of</strong> farming<br />
activity. Buffalos are generally preferred to cows because <strong>of</strong> high price <strong>of</strong> milk, being<br />
versatile, draft and resistance to diseases. But buffalo rearing has its own<br />
disadvantages. Therefore, it is recommended that farmers should have viable unit <strong>of</strong><br />
three cows (cross bred and two to three buffalos).<br />
Some <strong>of</strong> the important points for effective cattle management are :<br />
Follow proper housing, ventilation, disease control and feeding management.<br />
Animal should be milked 45 days after calving.<br />
Animals should be de-wormed 15 days prior to calving.<br />
Treat the navel cord <strong>of</strong> calf to prevent illness.<br />
Feed the calf 22-31 cholestrum per day.<br />
Start feeding concentrate at 4 weeks age, if the calf is not getting sufficient milk.<br />
Dehorn the calf at 2-4 weeks age.<br />
Proper vaccinations and health care should be done.<br />
Cross bred should conceive by about 90 days after calving, if not, then test for<br />
fertility.<br />
Goat / sheep based production system: Goat / sheep rearing are traditionally and<br />
widely practiced across the country. A viable unit / family comprises <strong>of</strong> 50 local<br />
improved sheep (Ewes) including 1-2 raw or 30 local improved goats (bucks)<br />
including one doc. Goats and sheep are commonly fed by open grazing. However,<br />
